  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OFFHOLLYWOOD HOTLINK + HOT TAP + HOTBOX R/S WIFI for RED DSMC cameras

Pulling focus off a touch screen sounds fun for the first 2 minutes, then a nightmare after that.

Touchscreen focus control will NEVER replace a tactile hand controller.

BUT ... for many specialty situations - it's a really killer tool - and I was not a believer at all until I used Foolcontrol iOS.

Mark, is there any plans on making a simple knob that works with focus for the hotlink? I love the idea of controlling the camera through my phone, but I have a hard time thinking it's practical for a 1st AC to work long days with a touch screen, especially outdoors in rain or snow.

heh heh heh

Please give some more hints.:-)

Will the Red 3 axis hand unit work with the hotlink to control focus of Nikon/Canon lenses like the Redlink?

No. There is not an RF radio inside the HOTLINK. (but if RED gave me the RF spec - I could spin a HOTLINK 2 for NAB easy breezy)

BUT ... there might be another way ...

This plus a 2 channel THC (wink, wink Jarred) would be the killer app for stills glass use on professional sets.

This is what I plan to do. I was trying to decide which route to go since right now I don't have any follow focus or lens sets, just a Canon 24-70 LII. It was either cheap manual glass like Rokinon and the new Tilta wireless FF, or go all electronic focus lenses like the Canon L series. I decided that the option to eventually move to the 2-channel THC for controlling focus and then use foolcontrol for other camera functions would be the best.

Mikael & I are racing to see who can "ship" first -

What about the winner being Jarred announcing by surprise price and shipping date for the 2 axis THC mini ? :-)

yes Tai you're right, OS X version has been available since April but Mark was in fact talking about the iOS version...
and thanks for buying the app :-)

It looks like we will be approx. 10 days behind but we will be able to ship more units faster - everything is in motion and going great - more specific shipping details by the end of the week as everything locks down - pushing hard.

yes - you can add anything you want to your order before it ships - just end an email to shop (at) offhollywoodny.com

With respect to the 3-inch antenna - if you are in AP mode (ad hock / directly connected from mobile device to HOTLINK/HOTBOX) in most cases it doesn't buy you anything - other than you can angle it so you have a better line of sight to mobile device. The only time we see any substantial difference is when you are connecting to a router (STA mode) - so HOTLINK/HOTBOX(s) connected to router - mobile device connected to router - that's when you can really boost range and see a difference.

If I'm not using a router - I just use 1" antenna.
