  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If there's fans there's be positive pressure that should keep out dust but not a quick downpour. If it's just replaceable fans than can get fried it's not so serious. Still, I love to have everything sealed from the elements when shooting in places like India where replacement fans may take a few days to arrive. Have to carry them along.

REDmote

REDmote

On the Redmote render there is a histogram, So does this imply complete wireless remote control of the camera so say an assistant can control and monitor iris and other set ups, rather like a vide camera CCU ?

Yes, REDmote can control the camera in that way, but there is no video on the LCD.

RedCode 250... does that mean more then 6 times less compression?
And more then 6 times the file-size?
Or does 250 stand for something els?

/carl

Are there or will there be any other upgrade paths for RED ONE other than the ones currently outlined yesterday by Jim? Like previous trade in of RED ONE allowed at full credit towards other EPIC brains or a discount towards scarlet? Thanks.

(while compensating for enormous crop factor)

Hi,

Nikon still lenses will be rather long for 2/3. A 50mm lens is always a 50mm lens regardless of what you attach it to.

It's been said that the data rate can be specified and is variable. Redcode 250 is unlikely to ever be necessary or even beneficial if you're shooting 24fps. The highest data rates are principally reserved for high frame rates like 5k at 100fps.

This I know, I was referring to FOV.
I had always ruled out 35mm glass as impractical on 2/3 for narrative due to lack of wide.
Even a tokina 11-16 would be something like 40-60mm FOV but Jim announced nikon and canon mounts for the 2/3.

And not just dumb mounts but electronic mounts so AF video on nikon glass begs the question

You can always pick up an ultra wide fisheye for wide shots. The image circle on a FF35 fisheye will more than cover a 2/3 sensor. Sigma has a 4.5mm f2.8 Canon mount fisheye for under $1k, and I've looked at that as a reasonable pick for wide work on the 2/3 scarlet.

EDIT: 4.5mm on 2/3 gives an equivalent FOV to 18mm on ff35.

At least with the current numbers, the variable is the size of megabytes per second of the file. The Red One started with Redcode 28, or 28 megabytes a second. It now has both Redcode 28 and 36.

Supposing Red is still doing it this way, Epic-X will have Redcode 250, which will produce files that are 250 megabytes a second.

...which is going to make some pretty gargantuan sized files.

Thanks but no thanks. Cutting from fisheye to rectilinear is a little weird !
Beside my post was not about the practicalities of 35mm glass on 2/3 for narrative. I'm sure JJ gave use those
35mm mounts for nature or sports shooting where long lenses are better.

My post was a question about AF video and its functionality with AF nikon glass

Djordje, my apologies for heating your head with fuzzy words.

My guess, but can't say whether it is even a cultivated guess, is that the sensors recognize the rotation angles of the camera and this is combined with the focus and iris setting. For instance, when the camera in panned and tilted, the iris and focus follows predefined settings. In addition, if the camera is say on the top of a crane, perhaps one can check tilt & pan from Redmote. But all this is about speculation. Soomer or later we will hear.

And yes, I sleep about 8 to 10 hours every night. :-)
I am glad about the sleeping, and thank you for telling me your toughts in easy way Lauri..I hope I'll find out more from you regarding this and other subjects in the future. Thank you again...:cheers2:

. Adding this with the fact that an error of 1/1000 of gravitation (that is 1/100 m/s^2) results in an error of 4.5m in (integration of) position in 30s. All this does not leave that much space for hopes.

Nobody is going to want to depend on an accellerometer for accurate tracking. Far too much drift in a inertial tracker. That being said gyros on the other hand are plenty accurate. You can get guidance gyros which after a shot will be less than a tenth of a degree off for a few hundred bucks.

The data off of a 3 axis gyro module would be more accurate than any optical track probably ever could get you and many tracking applications allow you to feed the data that you have into the tracker to assist with the optical track. By feeding PFTrack the iData plus the orientation of the camera plus the exact lens distortion model the only thing left is position which makes the job of the optical tracker far easier and more accurate.

VF = Variable Focus

VF = Variable Focus

Could it be the genius of the Red Squadron has created variable focus (VF) programmable marks that create an option for a single operator and talent to press a button for 4' focus then again 6' focus then 2' focus? If so...Wowwwwwwwwww. that creates all kinds of possibilities.

You could choreograph moves and focus would be tac sharp. In addition with motion sensors movement could determine sharpness based on what a base measurement may be giving the camera the ability to autofocus based on movement of the talent...this is all speculationof course...BTW thanks again Jim, Jarred and all the RED family for making my experience with your camera better and better every build and everyday.

Much respect!

I really don't understand how people can consider rewarding existing RED ONE owners with some extra modules if they upgrade to EPIC is somehow punishing those that don't already own the ONE.

If it's the free modules that get you down, look at it this way: RED ONE owners have purchased plenty of accessories that won't carry over ideally to the EPIC.
With the BOMB EVF and shoulder mount options, it makes the Element Technica EVF mount and MANTIS shoulder mount, as perfect as they were for the ONE, a lot less attractive with the EPIC. Getting the modules from RED helps alleviate that pain.
I have never heard of another camera company doing anything close to this.

If it's the trade in of the camera that gets you down, look at it this way: You know the EPIC is coming, and right now, you can buy a ONE and then trade it in for 100% of what you paid for it later down the road. You don't get the modules, but you have the advantage of knowing what is coming, and can avoid purchasing anything that you wouldn't want to use with the EPIC. There have been a handful of offers over the years of high-end cameras having a "buy the current model now, upgrade to the new model when it's out" offers, but it's not too common.

Perhaps you don't own a RED ONE, and you hate the upgrade idea altogether. Before you go to far with that, I can put you in touch with someone on this board who bought a 5D MKII from Canon just before the 7D was released. He had no idea the 7D was coming, and Canon didn't offer him any sort of trade-in.
He really wanted 24p, so he agonized over the decision, before finally selling his 5D MKII at a loss, and buying a 7D. The very next day, Canon announced a firmware update to add 24p to the 5D MKII.

If you insist that rewarding some people means punishing others, then it sure seems that Canon is rewarding people who don't buy their products, by punishing those that do.

If you are considering purchasing an EPIC in the future, wouldn't you want to purchase something from a company that has a track record of rewarding the people who buy their products, rather than punishing them?

a quick downpour isn't going to be good for any camera left exposed :)

The fans are really easy to get at to clean/replace/blow out... if you look at the front of the brain in some of the photos i posted, There are 2 screws on the bottom corners of the front grill. You simply take those screws out, and the whole fan module slides out towards you.

Am I right in saying that Option 2, where you keep your original cam can be done without Red HQ having sight of the original body?

So you are still eligable if your cam is stolen (based on your original serial no, as opposed to that of the insurance replacement. ), destroyed by a rouge pyro, or otherwise has it's warrenty invalidated?

Do any of the scarlet brains have in-built audio?
(for low profile guerilla shooting)

EDIT: I mean a mic

Answer here:

The muc is a low profile scratch microphone that snaps into the front microphone ports on both Scarlet and Epic.. it's not built in per say but it blends in pretty well. We like to keep things modular to give people options.

There is something in those renders of the RED Electronic FF lens that nobody has picked up yet.... something that is actually pretty incredible ( and a first )

OK, just been listening to RedCenter (floating point LUTs?)

Anyhoo, Jarred's comment bout something we missed. Here's some musing based on comments in the Podcast...

Laser guided focusing built into the lens?
Tracking a radio module moving in front of the lens?
Calculating object positions in 3d space by pivoting the some of the lens elements? (no 3d image, but 3d info obtained from the offsets)
