  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good to know, thanks. I guess I'll have to use the Canon version of the Tokina and keep switching mounts on the camera :-(

It would be really nice if the most popular lenses were supported on the Nikon mount. The Tokina 11-16 has to be considered part of that group.
 
Jonas - why would you take David's opinion of my mount when he has never used it, and says so in his post? His info is not "good to know".

My mount - from my company Long Valley Equipment, which is an OEM to Red Cine - is very robust and not like any other Nikon mount. It is my own design.

The only thing he said was that he saw similarities between this design and a product he had used that he was not happy with. Since he has no affiliation either way, I have no reason to doubt him. You obviously have different opinion. I'm waiting for folks that have used the actual product to chime in.

David is attributing design attributes to the Long Valley mount that it simply doesn't have. It's not stamped aluminum and it doesn't use a leaf spring. So the two things that he felt were causes for concern simply aren't there.

I definitely agree don't take my opinion, other than the advice to get feedback from existing users who are more familiar with the design. It's difficult to tell a lot of the details in a single video, better to hear it from experienced users. The RED mount (which is excellent) and the manual design are substantially different, the Red unit has the traditional Nikon twist and locking pin in addition to the rotation locking the lens bayonets in place. The only task of the friction ring locking the bayonets is to keep heavy lenses rigidly in position (a flaw in the normal Nikon lens mounts that use springs on the back surface of the camera bayonets). Unless there's a motion that you can't see in the video, the manual mount only has a friction lock lever, which raises at least one question - is it possible that I could hit it with my hand when moving the camera and release the lens? Even with a normal Nikon mount, two things have to go wrong for you to drop a lens, with the Red design three things have to go wrong. Is there a lock on the mount with a release somewhere we couldn't see that you'd need to press to enable ring rotation?

As I said... could be a good solid design... just hard to tell from the video.
 
My mount has a locking lever. It works just like an Arri PL mount, or a Panavision mount, neither of which has a separate lock. It operates like those mounts in that it the locking action is a cam, not a spring.

It works just like the locking lever on the Red One Nikon mount which I designed and manufactured and which Red sells in their store. In fact, it is identical.

How many users have "hit" the lock lever on a PL or PV mount and dropped a lens?

I would never comment on any piece of equipment that I hadn't actually used, and used extensively.
 
Can we make some minor noise about Red releasing more support for Nikon-mount lenses on Epic? Waiting for the camera was understandable, and waiting for their great Nikon mount was a little more painful. Now getting it to work as intended seems to be a lower priority. Please, support more F-mount lenses! This mount system/concept with auto-focus is amazing, let's see what it can really do.

+++: I bought Red's Nikon mount specifically for using electronic feedback of focus....yet NONE of my commonly used Nikon lenses work to date.....Yet the Canons seem to have all the love. I've been asking my Rep now for months...but no luck so far in my lenses working at all. Thank god for Jacek's and Doug's manual mounts---of which i own both.

How can i put this, time has finally come to get the Nikon mount working with a wide variety of lenses. I hate having this mount sit around and utterly useless. It has so much promise, but time is ticking....
Please RED.

+++1 to this . I really hope someone at Red is looking at this and planning to get a lot more Nikon lenses working on the Epic.

I should add that I used Doug's Red One Nikon mount (an early version I think) and it worked perfectly every time.
 
Any word on adding support for more lenses? I'd love to see some Sigma and Tamron zooms supported.

Also, is there anything end users can do to help RED build support for specific lenses?

It really would be good to get some sort of response from Red about lens support for the nikon mount. If there are difficulties in getting lenses to work with this mount please just say so. I know a lot of work went into getting the mount to work in the first place so seems such a shame that it appears to have been left in the wilderness now...
 
I have 3 three AF-S f2.8 Zooms that I'm looking forward to seeing characterized, they are:

Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 17-35mm 2.8D
Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 2.8D
Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8D

They have silent wave motors, so hopefully they may be included in the future, in the meantime I just use them in full manual mode. Hoping with great anticipation, and Thanks!!!

Well, obviously there is not enough interest to make it a priority for RED and at this point I'm okay with that. I use it with "dumb" lenses only and it works great for those at least.
 
Very disappointing. It means I probably have to go the Canon route instead.
I really don't want to.

Always liked Nikon better, and if I'm not wrong, Jim or Jarred talked about the superior mechanical quality of Nikon, discussing different mounts. I have a whole set of my favorites and was planning to slowly expand with need.
