  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon Mount Aluminum and Titanium

Well, I guess it's like a slow break-up. First you promised each over the world, but your partner start to lose interest, and now you don't really talk anymore...
I think RED got burned by the magnitude of problems included in producing all the stuff they dreamt of. It's just easier to just have the pl and Canon mount supported. Only problem is that I love dreamers. I think that is why I bought into RED. And I really don't want to buy seven Canon lenses. Please show us some Nikon love.
 
Does the new Epic build help with the Nikon lenses compatibility at all? I heard there was some improvements.

I'm thinking the odds of ever seeing a Nikon motion mount are pretty slim... maybe the market isn't there, Canon has a vibrant video business going - I don't ever hear anyone say they use the D800 for video (I've got one and I don't use it for video, fantastic STILL camera).

It's a very good video camera too, but when you've got an Epic, why would you use a D800?
 
As I've said on countless occasions Canon is a herd mentality. Give them credit for having a budget likely 100:1 as compared to Nikon in terms of marketing, R & D. Hard to compete with that. But Nikon does it in their own quiet way with cutting-edge sensor technology and terrific optics. Many of new crop instantly classify themselves as 'photographers' after purchasing a bag full of Canon gear. Ooh all the really cool white-colored lenses. They often ask me why I use Nikon, I respond 'why do you use Canon?'

I'd be willing to say a fair number of them have never used cameras with film or know little about history of SLR bodies, but they do know a bag full of Canon equipment makes them a 'photographer' or 'filmmaker.' When I speak to university students of course their camera of choice is Canon. Hey what else better to accompany their $40K yearly tuition then 'the only choice.'

Truth be told go to any major event such as the Super Bowl or Oscars or cover President of United States and you'll see an equal distribution of both amongst true professionals. Perhaps even more Nikon. Canon is lucky Nikon can not spend the $Millions in research or there would be a larger discrepancy between the two.

Some would point to large agencies such as Getty using Canon exclusively but I'd throw back Nikon decided not to 'give up the house' for Getty or others just so they would use it. It all balances as it should. Nikon optics are widely known for superior forensic equipment, testing and measurement around the world. They are less frills but nothing short on quality.

Canon makes great stuff, no doubt about it, I hear the guy next to me with three 1DX bodies around his neck getting an extra frame or two per second of that big moment at an event, and stuff looks tack sharp.

Hey in the end just give Nikon a little love. As a professional I stuck with Nikon through thick and thin never switched; knock on wood never will switch.

Alas, end to my Nikon diatribe for today.

I find myself using the D800 somewhat regularly for clients on a tight budget, solo backpacking or location scouting situations to lighten the load, and a fair amount of talking head/pickup shot situations where resolution isn't critical. The bulk of my filming is done on the Epic, but it's nice to have something smaller and lighter that produces tiny file sizes in the bag.

Also does anyone know if the 2x Nikon TC 20e iii allows aperture control with the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VRII ?

[i'm thinking of getting the 70-200 which i see is supported, but every now and then i need a 300mm so will get the tc20e iii (context: this is for special "practical" effects shots ).]
 
I just tried it with my D800 and yes it does properly control the 70-200 f/2.8G ED VRII (including knowing that the it's 5.6 wide open when using the TC20e). Have not tried it with the epic yet.

Thanks David. I have also been looking at the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon ... that is also fully supported. I really like the nikon 70-200 ... such a great lens and fairly inexpensive, with the 2x to get me to a shallow depth of field at 400mm.
 
I shot last year with the 70-200 and TC20e... and it seemed like the resulting D800 images were pretty soft to the point where it didn't (subjective resolution) look like I was getting anything relative to shooting at 200 and cropping. If you'd like I'll grab some shots with the teleconverter in the morning - any particular settings you're interested in? Though - if you're going to use the lens with an Epic or Dragon the teleconverter might be more useful since they're not pushing the lens as hard resolution wise... I've not really used the teleconverter since then.

hmmm ... i'm doing sfx on squirrels and crows, maybe i should just get the sigma 120-300 (or get the nikon 200-400 ... that baby is pricey though $6k). I need hard edges since i will need to roto the animal shapes in nukex(and sometimes do 3d solves). [also the nikon 200-400 isn't listed by red as supported]

D800 was set in Aperture priority, autofocus, no VR (on a tripod). They're not modified in any way other than conversion from raw to jpg and adding a text id of the lens settings.

I have a Nikon 200-400 and a RED electronic Nikon mount. I've never tried them together, I always use my Optitek, but happy to give it a go if it helps. I was going to shoot some long lens stuff tomorrow anyway. Let me know.

Thanks David, I went through your albums ... the b&w shot of the bird in the snow "Winter birds at the feeders. Red Epic M Monochrome, Nikkor 70-200 ED-VRII" (A001_C006_0215RH.0004400F) really stood out, is exactly what i'm trying to do and is using the lens with the exact camera i have.

Hi Matt, if you could please check one thing for me that would be great. What I really need to know is if the nikon 200-400 is supported by the epic without using a optitek ( I have a nikon mount and almost always am in manual focus so i don't need that to function on the epic, but what i specifically need to know is if the epic will control the aperture through the red nikon mount using the 200-400 nikon lens)?

Just checked. I am running Epic_Dragon_Build_v5.2.41 and I can confirm that the Nikon 200-400 aperture can be controlled through the camera. The VR seems to work too. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.
