  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Yes that was the best bird shot I got last winter, at my skill level I'm happy to get one of those out of 500 tries. The difficulty with the 70-200 is how close I need to be to the animal to get a decent image. Working outdoors it's just not enough, but for that shot I was in the house... on the other side of a window 7 or 8 feet away. The D800 takes great images and has enough resolution that I can crop them down to effectively increase the zoom on a shot, but the Epic Monochrome shots (when they work) are so silky smooth they really do stand out.

I guess I should have specified before that I have and tested the Nikon 200-400mm f/4G AF-S VR not the newer VR II.

Is there a list somewhere of compatible Nikon mount lenses? I'm specifically concerned about whether the following lenses have electronic iris control.

Tokina 11-16mm
Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G
Nikon Micro NIKKOR 70-180mm f/4.5-5.6 D AF ED

Hello,
I just took delivery of a Sigma 12-24mm f4 ART in Nikon F-Mount but it does not have the mechanical aperture lever. The Nikon mount is unable to change the aperture, it sees the lens and sends focal length data but in the iris menu it only has f4 as an option. Now I normally use a manual lens mount (Optitek) but that also can't operate this lens because of the lack of lever. The electronic mount can operate the aperture on a whole bunch of lenses I have, both Nikon and other brands, lens that are both officially supported and unsupported. They all, however have the mechanical aperture lever. So does anyone have any experience using a fully electronic iris Nikon lens on this mount? Can they work?

Rather irritatingly this Sigma will work on the electronic Comix mount I have on a Sony A7sii so its not the lens.

I tried the 24-70 2.8 E new generation Nikon lens and it worked to some degree but did not work between 2.8 and 4.0 as I remember. I spoke with support and they have limited support for E type lenses (sounds like the new Art) but until it is supported, it will not work. All the lenses with the mechanical lever work similarly to one another, so they all tend to work on iris. Hopefully, the next release will support more lenses in Nikon mount.
 
Thanks Jon, sounds like its an E lens issue then. Such a shame as, as you say, even with unsupported lenses, if they have the mechanical lever they still work (well at least have aperture control).
 
Now I know why my Nikon 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR was giving me trouble night of the Supermoon. Funny it worked first time I powered camera, then on battery change it never registered. Good thing the moon is really bright.
 
It is so unfortunate that Red is not very supportive of Nikon glass. I have been waiting about 3 years for Red to support the 20mm f 1.8 AF-s. Still waiting.

Have you asked support?
 
Made phone calls and offered my lens to map and verify. Told by bomb squad guy about 18 months ago of the offer. He called back and said Red did not want the loan of the lens.

Perhaps this was overlooked. RED has been great implementing firmware to support lenses. Remember Nikkor has for most part changed design and functionality several times through the years so it's never as easy for a universal mount to recognize everything right out of the box.
 
Other AF-s G lenses have been supported. Even some obscure D lenses have been supported, although obviously the autofocus can not be supported on those lenses because it is a screw drive which Red mounts are not equipped for. Still hopefully waiting for the 20mm 1.8 AF-s love from Red. It is such a wonderful lens.
 
How does that 20mm 1.8 look wide open?
 
The 20mm 1.8 is wonderful wide open. Sharp and nice contrast. Good rumor has it that Panavision rehouses Nikon AF-s primes. I think it is a bargan lens for the price. AF-s lenses are not tight tolerance lenses so they can focus fast on still cameras. I have noticed that all
AF-s lenses exhibit image shift to one degree or another when manually focused, however there is little or no image shift when the internal lens motor is used. This is why I crave for Red to support this particular lens.
