  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon Mount Aluminum and Titanium

Yes, aluminum, the Nikon mount was never designed to support the weight that PL was. That said the new Epic Nikon locking mechanisim is the strongest and most solid Nikon mount I've ever encountered. I had my 70-200 VRII on earlier and it felt perfectly fine without support. My 300mm 2.8 VRII will probably need some support, though the lens will probably support the Epic body in a DSLR configuration.

Kwan, if you want to send me the Rokinons I'll test them against the Gs.

Great, Thank Evin
I will send you 24mm, 35mm and 85mm (as soon as 24mm available at B an H)

Nikon Al mount here too... As cool as the Ti mount is, my cameras will still spend 99% of the time with PL glass on them. Just had to have the Nikon mount so I can have the option of using all my Nikon glass. Hope that 105mm G macro gets profiled soon. Should have my mount in a few days, but probably won't get to play for a bit after -- starting a shoot monday and won't have time to swap mounts during that time.

If the Nikon mount were going to be my primary mount on the camera or if I were going to be renting out a camera with Nikon mount, I would get the Ti version, no question about it.

Dear Red Team,

Ordered, but couldn´t find detailed information. Will the mount support manual lenses (Ai/Ais) in addition to just the physical fit, does it read the Ai information via the Ai coupling ridge, at least for meta data? Will it be able to control aperture via the Ai-s now or maybe after a new firmware release? Any insights appreciated.

Cheers

Ulf

The answer to this is yes-and-no. The F-mount of the AI-S lenses will fit without problem. The problem is this - the part of the lense mount circled in red. On some lenses, the length of this is not an issue, and some of my AI-S lenses mount beautifully, but on others, like the 50mm 1.2 AI-S pictured here, this tab is just barely too long and will make it very difficult to mount the lens and will rub on the inside of the RED mount.

I'll be contacting both Duclose and RPlens about this, since they will modify AI-S lenses, so I can get their opinions. Hopefully, it'll be an issue of simply maching off or filing down that tab.

Did a quick mounting test with my AI & AIS lenses...

Mounted and functioned great...
28mm F2 AIS
35mm F2 AI
40mm F2 Voightlander
50mm f1.4 AIS
85mm f2 AI
105mm f2.8 Macro AIS
135mm f2.8 AI
180mm f2.8 ED AIS
PN-11 extention tube

Would not mount, modification needed...
20mm f2.8 AIS
50mm f2 AI

After reading this thread, it's unclear to me if the iris will work on the Tokina 11-16 pre-profile. Anyone tried it?

Thanks,
Phil

I haven't seen a 50 f/2 AI or 20 f/2.8 AI-s, is this "extended tab" that needs to be ground down the same as the one on the 50 f/1.2 AIs?

Not exactly, but close. Pretty much anything that sticks out past that metal flange height on the left needs to come off. I'll post pics in a bit.

Extended AI / AIS won´t mount list:
20 2.8
24 2.0
35 1.4
50 1.2
55 1.2

Pretty much the whole line I bought the mount for!
RED Support, any chance we get a working mount?

Cheers

Ulf

Edit: 24/2.0

Ummm.... I own every lens on that list except for the 55 and I also have the 85 AIS. When you say they won't mount, do you mean you can't physically mount them on the camera? If it's just the issue with the tab protrusion, I think I've already modded mine to fit other cameras anyway, so not a big deal for me now.

Jeff,

Yes it is not possible to mount these lenses because of that pin. I recently collected all these lenses in good condition for use with the Nikon mount and now I have to modify them?
The 85/1.4 is OK, so is the 105/1.8 and 180/2.8 also a 28/2.8 does mount well.

Cheers

Ulf

Those tabs were intended for use with the original AI system on the FE and and no current Nikon body film or digital uses them. It's a very straight forward modification that can be done with a dremel and a file. If you absolutely can't bring your self to remove three screws and do it yourself then call Duclos or an authorized Nikon service center. As far as Red modifying the mount, I think it's damn impressive they've been able to cram as much functionality as they have in there. If you are only interested in MF lenses anyway then the Optitek or other dumb (non electronic) mount will probably suit you better.

I'm not willing to take a grinder to my beautiful lenses because Red made their mount wrong -.-

Red didn't make it wrong, they just designed it around the current crop of high performance AF lenses, Nikon has made literally hundreds if not thousands of variations of their lenses over the last 5 decades, it's not realistic to expect Red to test and measure every single one for fit, and of course you do have other options if you need them (see above).

ProLock works with all Nikon lenses- manual and G- series, with no modifications to lenses needed...:wink5:

Evin,

AFAIK these pins are protection pins for the rear lens elements and provide information of maximum opening. AI aperture setting transmission is performed via the coupling ridge on the aperture dial. AIS means the little pin that moves the iris is calibrated to get an iris control by the camera. It was introduced with the FA. It would have been easy to leave the space within the mount. These lenses fit on any recent nikon body. I´m sorry but I am with Lee, we could have expected this from RED. Additionally and that was why I was waiting for the RED TI Nikon Mount I expected the readout of the AI information and transformation into the camera for meta data. Please don´t misunderstand me but in this case I might have been better (and earlier) served with the prolock.

Cheers

Ulf

That's certainly a reasonable point. But I believe it would be more applicable if I was asking for pre-AI compatibility, or to actually meter/aperture couple with these AI indexing pins, or compatibility with the early fisheyes that protruded so far behind the mount they required mirror lock-up, or something else that (AFAIK) even Nikon no longer offers without modification.

Asking that any lens which fits a current Nikon-made F-mount -- especially a very common, still in production one like the 50 1.2 -- fit a Red-made F-mount seems fairly reasonable.
