  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon Mount Aluminum and Titanium

Well, I think that filing/grinding off some pins on the back of your lenses is no big deal, but then again, I can see one's objection to this procedure. Personally I modify most of my equipment anyway; this practice has a long tradition in motion picture photography (no two older movie cameras are alike!).

May I suggest our PosiLock mount for Epic and Scarlet if you don't want to modify:

Extended AI / AIS won´t mount list:
20 2.8
24 2.8
35 1.4
50 1.2
55 1.2

Pretty much the whole line I bought the mount for!
RED Support, any chance we get a working mount?

Cheers

Ulf

Also add the 24mm f2 ai-s to this list.

I see both Evin and Lee's points on this. Since the clearance issues seem to be incredibly small, maybe someday soon we'll see RED release a v2 Nikon mount that accounts for them. But I'm certainly not going to begrudge RED for what's a minor issue. 20 minutes time, and both my 24mm and 50mm have had the tab filed down and fit wonderfully. The length of a tab doesn't add beauty to the lens, nor does it affect the quality... so it's gone.

We could also point a little blame at Nikon for not having universal compatability with thier own lenses and mounts.

Nathaniel,

thank you for your correction, it is the 24/2 here, too. The 24/2.8 might fit. Regarding the pin, I´ll probably will have to go this route, too. But I have to grind at least five lenses, it simply is annoying. These lenses fit on any recent Nikon body, why not on the RED mount?

Cheers

Ulf

ABout the rocker on the side handle to change aperture working slow or not... Mine does that too.. strangely enough its working fast and precise once you use the menu exposure route. With the side handle you can basically scroll through them like on a SLR.

Oh.. before I forget. Placed my wife's AF-S 18-200/3.5-5.6 G ED DX-lens and it works like a charm :-)

There is a lot of technology crammed into that mount, including an extremely smooth stepper motor. Could Red have engineeded the mount to accept these legacy lenses, probably, would we have to have given up some functionality, or paid more $? probably.
I few minuites with a dremel and file are a very small trade off.

I don't care about zooms. Has anyone tested the G primes yet?

+1 on that. trying to figure out if 1.8 Gs will work... while wadding through this long thread... good stuff though. cheers

I tried various qualified Nikon "G" lenses now. While everything seemed to work properly at first sight (a bit slow though) I experience wrong aperture settings, for example with the 85 1.4 the aperture is completely closed (22) when set to 11. Same with other approved glass. I put the lenses on a switched off camera, turned the camera on, the lowest and highest aperture values are regognized by the camera, and yes I´m running the latest beta build which supports the Nikon mount. Is this just me, or anybody else with that behavior?

I only have a 14-24G and a 24-70G and the aperture settings seem to work fine on those lenses so far.

Thank you Bill, I also tried this lens and had the same failure, no variation of the iris above a certain setting (not sure which number on this lens), it seems my mount is closing the iris too early. Everybody else´s working fine?

I am using my buddies glass, not sure how thrilled he will be if it doesn't fit... Will report back on results, mount should be here in 43 minutes according to delivery guy...

Just got my Nikon mount, and my epic for that matter and have been very pleased so far. I have one lens that i'm trying to figure out however. I have an AF Nikkor 20-35 2.8. It has a Manual Iris gear but can be controlled through camera. When I put the lens on the nikon mount, the iris reacts with a buzz, and the focal length is even recognized. I can manually focus and focus distance and focal length show in camera, however for the life of my I can't change the aperature. Moving the ring does nothing and exposure box is grayed out. This is the only AF lens that I have been able to test, all of my older AIS lenses work great. I'm new to the whole system so I'm thinking there may be something I'm missing.

Iris should work, probably not focus, but you might get lucky

Still not clear to me whether iris control works on the Tokina 11-16 with Nikon mount. Can anyone confirm? It's not officially supported yet, which is surprising.

I have an older Tokina 11- 16 (2 - 3 years old) which does not work. It works when you mount it but does not give accurate nor useable control as soon as you change anything on the lens. I could not even get it to work properly in manual focusing. The iris seems to get locked into the wrong range. I'm suspect this is a software issue so hopefully it will get sorted at some point. It is a little disappointing that there are plenty of Canon lenses supported but so few Nikon. I specifically purchased the Nikon mount on the expectation that there would be good support for Nikon lenses. I'm sure it will come at some point - at least I hope so... though I'm beginning to think it would have been better to invest in new Canon lenses and mount but it's too late late now. It would be good to get some word from RED about what we can expect in terms of the range of support for Nikon lenses on the Epic... Anyone?

Ok guys, just ran across this:
http://longvalleyequip.com/lensmount.php

A Nikon mount that has manual iris control for $295. Anyone tried it? Is it officially supported by RED or would using it void warranties etc?

Jonas I've not used that particular mount but I have used Nikon mounts for machine vision cameras that utilized similar stamped stainless retaining rings with a 'leaf spring like' locking button (looks like what this mount is using)... I was not happy with their performance or reliability. They didn't hold the lens securely... well... they held securely enough that the lens wouldn't pop out, but there always seemed to be some give to the mount. On the reliability side... the locking spring would relax over time and eventually stop locking the lens in place.

This particular mount may not have these issues... but I'd suggest getting feedback from a user before buying.

I make the Long Valley Nikon Mount for Epic and Scarlet.

It uses the same water jet cut 303 stainless locking ring that is in the Red One Nikon mount, which I also make.

It is not a spring. There are no springs in this mount.

It has a manual iris activator for smooth iris pulls during takes, with a 32/0.8 gear attached.
