  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Next 6 months?

The last official word was that Scarlet is finished, but due to the Japan earthquake/tsunami disaster some of the smaller, more minor parts integral to Scarlet's production are slightly delayed. Up until that announcement, the reported timeframe was in the months following NAB (which would be now) so it comes down to what you think RED means when they say "slightly delayed". That could mean end of the summer. Much more likely end of the year.

It definitely seems like all the attention is on Epic right now. There hasn't been any actual new Scarlet info in what feels like months. (exaggeration)

I'd be happy with a new picture of the scarlet, just to know that its heart is still beating. Well, Honestly I'd be happy with just about anything.:smile5:

Why would you want Red to announce yet another Scarlet release date? By Jim Jannard's own admission, Red is bad at sticking to schedules.

Yes, the next thing I wanna hear about Scarlet is: start to order! :)

Funny thing is that after 3 years the specs are still top notch. Tells you something about how far ahead RED is. Don't have to be a fanboy to see that.

The specs are very different today to the original Scarlet pocket camera. I am sure there are a few socker mums who whould prefer the original.

At NAB, Ted told me pretty definitively that Scarlet will ship this fall and orders may be end of June/July. I have a grant that was going to run out at the end of June and that would be on the cusp. Thankfully the grant was extended through the end of the year, which i hope will now be enough time to get two.

I doubt even the original Scarlet concept would have appealed much to soccer moms. It was not really a consumer camera even at $3k for 3k. The commitment to raw work flow and editing capability requires the commitment of at least a serious creative hobbyist. Soccer moms buy sub $1k consumer pocket cameras more than 85% of the time.

That includes the delay from the Tsunami?

If so then that's great!

If not then... well...

well thats true felix, but what does that help you, when you cant buy that stuff? nothing, cause with just the info on the paper, you cant shoot a movie...

Actually, they are not all that different. The ergonomics have changed, and modularity has enabled greater configuration flexibility. But the core specs are very similar. The original design was just that -- a design. Many of the specs and features were never mentioned, although in early interviews Ted Schilowitz did hint that things like full-frame 1080p and speed ramping were being planned. The only real difference seems to be HDRx, which had never been mentioned until last year, although Jim Jannard said the capability had always been theoretically possible. Ironically, some of the specs of the modular Scarlet (such as the basic-kit LCD size [2.8 inches] and maximum RedCode rate [42]) have changed and are now similar or identical to those of the original (5-inch base LCD [4.8-inch on the original] and a maximum RedCode of 100 [same as the original]).

Last official info I have seen was something about problems with lens components from Japan for Scarlet 8x and it sounded not promising at all. Might be hard component to resource. I hope I'm wrong but I would speculate end'ish Q1 2012 for any significant volumes of shipping Scarlet 8x.

One positive thing about it, not that the disaster in Japan can be seen as something good, but now can the hard working people @RED fine tune the Scarlet model. Not that it is needed, but you never know...

Well, I've waited and waited and waited. I eventually had to get something to keep shooting commercials and I bought a Sony F3, which has been fantastic. I'd still love to have a Scarlet, but by the time it comes out I may have had up to a solid year of shooting with the F3. I'm shooting for HDTV and web so the F3 suits my 1920x1080 clientspace. You can only wait and hope for so long...

Indeed, if you can't wait for Scarlet, you need something else. But I can wait.
2012 will be wonderful...

You know, I find it funny that after all of these years, other companies know about the scarlet and what it will be able to do...you think after this long of a wait, the competition would release something close to or better then what the scarlet will be, at that price range...but nope! I dont think they can come up with what the scarlet has at that price...or even close... As long as it has taken...yes I have had to rent cameras for shoots, or use DSLRs, but ya know...it will be worth it getting that scarlet in the end. There probably still wont be anything that can compete with it at that price range...the wait will have been worth it I think :)
