  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Next 6 months?

Even though the two models are identical on many levels, it is not the same camera, and have therefore been developed simultaneously.
From what I understand, all the three Epic models will be out before any of the Scarlets. But the reason why we're not sure is probably because nothing is official yet.

Correct, Epic-S has new internal boards.

Epic-M , Epic-X, Scarlet 8x Fixed, and then Epic-S is the most likely roll out order right now... with modules (that work on all of them) coming out here and there along the entire timeframe.

We are still at the mercy of supply though, so anything , and everything above can, and likely will, change.

I shall express my highest level of patience for the Scarlet Interchangable, whenever that may surface :)

How about a Scarlet Fixed-M ? he he he

Hey Jarred, I know Epic X's plan for August/September production, and if you say Scarlet fixed after, then where would you put the Epic S in the timeframe IF everything goes according to plan with things looking the way they do in Japan.

Will we have to wait till Sping 2012 or are we looking at late Winter 2011 for the Epic S?

For peace sake, how much longer ;)

Am I wrong to assume that we need to see EPIC-X rolling off the shelf in volume before we should even anticipate Scarlet being manufactuered?

I know its hard.. but lets take one step at a time. Once Epic-X production is rolling off the lines in good supply then we will have a good idea on dates for the rest of the program to begin production. We really need to focus on X right now.

That said.. Scarlet development is kicking ass. To clear up the rumors.. Scarlet development has not been put on hold. The team is strong and development is running along just fine. Japan had its effect on Scarlet production as well, but we definitely didn't send all the engineers home :)

Good news for all. X=XXX ; )

Thanks Jarred. I think it is that we have heard nothing for a while apart from the potential September release date, which means in Red speak 'maybe has changed' rather than official word that September still looks very good. I may have the attention span of billions of gnats, but a lot of people dont.

I would like to ask a question, because it is what I would do, and what some companies do. I take that the development team is still working on Scarlet. Does that mean that they have been enhancing the features of the Scarlet range during the delay as new potential becomes available before manufacture? I ask this because I am one of the 4k Scarlet crowd, the 'O'Hara' version.:wink5:

A 4k Scarlet sounds nice as it seems 2k finishes may have a limited life on this planet..

Does dropping the past 3 years of R&D work, which was put into the Scarlet, sound very appealing? You can't get the same resolution out of a 16mm camera as a 35mm, so I don't see what the issue with the 3K camera is. It was/is being designed for a different purpose than an EPIC (or a RED One, for that matter)

I think Kalani was just posting wishful thinking and not suggesting Red change their 3k Scarlet to a 4k Scarlet.

Don't listen to them Kalani, they speak what they hear, not necessarily what canbe. :wink5: It does not take scrapping of 3 years R&D (and scarlet was conceived before that) to improve your plan before it is released. It is wishful hoping anyway, but there has been well over a years delay since it was to be released.

It will be interesting if the Scarlet-line will be able to get a similiar Dragon/MX-update to improve the resolution, DR or that coveted coffee-making feature.

Especially considering that by the time scarlet is out it will pretty much be Dragon time... I certainly hope the scarlet system is upgradeable as Epic is. My interest in scarlet is more than just the fact that it's cheaper than Epic. I want to develop a 2/3rds system for it's aesthetics.

4k on a 2/3" sensor would likely lose more than it would gain in sensitivity and DR. The extra resolution wouldn't be very useful anyway as there are no lenses sharp enough to take advantage of it. There are very few that can resolve 3k on a sensor this small.

I'm just sayin 2k seems to have a limited life on this planet.. Just entertaining the idea.. Don't get me wrong.. I cannot wait for Scarlet to come out, even with it's original specs.. My workflow will be web based so it's probably overkill but I digress.. I just hope we see it come out before 2012..

I have to admit that I do not follow the Scarlet development at all...that said.

Would the fixed lens cover 4k?

If it did, they maybe it would be possible.

In not saying they'd throw out three years of development but they might build in it. Considering how important 4k is vs 1080p, especially as stated many tines over right here by Jim, it would not surprise me at all if that camera had a larger sensor and 4k capability.

Wild speculation alert!!!!!

I think that would be smart.

Maybe it only shoots 4k 2:1?
Maybe only 9:1 compression but on a full MX sensor.

Everything changes. Especially after three years. It wouldn't surprise me but maybe it's not possible.

To me that seems to be the fixed Scarlett that would make sense today.

Can't say fairer than that Jarred... thanks for the update. I'm planning to buy both EPIC-X and Scarlet, so I'm following both.

While you're clearing up rumors, are you able to confirm or deny something that I've read more than once, and probably repeated myself? I'm sure I've read that, beyond the basic core software, Scarlet 8x development/production is pretty much entirely decoupled from EPIC? Different manufacturing facilities and minimal co-dependencies? True or false? In other words, there's no reason you couldn't be making 1,000 Scarlets a week right now (modulo the lens & component supply issues of course!) if it wasn't for the fact that you're concentrating resources and going balls out to get EPIC-X in production?

Thanks

Mike

Would the fixed lens cover 4k?

It would cover 10k if you made the photosites small enough and close enough together...

I don't think that's a helpful question TBH.

Mike
