  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

News from Cool Lights

Thanks guys. Hold onto the plastic just a bit longer. Should be in production soon on the 1200. The 2400 is going to be a bit longer because I'm going to do it a bit differently than I envisioned before, but it should be even better for the changes.

Glad to hear it Richard. We too use our 2 600's everyday and LOVE them, so having more powerful choices soon will be awesome!

Eager to hear more about the 1200 and 2400 designs.

I'm also very interested in the 1200 and 2400, and whether they'll have battery fixture options.

Do you have any plans to do real small units like litepanels,
or on camera lights or a ring light ?

1200 and 2400 battery options. When you have something like the LED 600, its in a size and power usage category that you can have it all in one package and not worry so much about heat. What that means is all the battery adaptation/regulation and the dimmer is inside the LED 600 and that's okay for that one.

When you get into the 1200 and 2400, its a real issue and you should think about spreading things around to keep the heat (and weight) spread around as well. On the 1200 and 2400 we'll have two power 'accessories': one included and one optional. The units will come with AC adapters so the person that needs no battery use at all won't pay for the very expensive battery adaptation necessary in this wattage range (90w and 180w respectively). The other power accessory will be an optional box with a battery regulator inside as well as places for two optional V mount or AB mount type batteries and has 4 pin XLR standard input. This box will have our carabiner on it so you can hang it on the light stand. Thus, with this unit you will be able to adapt an external large lead acid battery or any DC voltage source in the range of 10V to 24V through the 4 pin XLR to what the LED 1200/2400 need. Alternatively, with the same box, you'll also be able to mount up to 2 AB or V batteries directly onto the unit as well if you prefer that type of battery. These two accessories, one that comes with the fixtures and the other optional, with their considerable heat output, are thus external and thus the fixture itself stays relatively cool. This also lets us keep the fixtures as thin and simple as possible which contributes to light weight and portability. LED 1200 and 2400 will come with a nice carrying case which will carry all the accessories.

Ring Light. I was working on a 10" ring light but got stalled in working on other things. Someone told me 10" was too small and I should make it more like 16" diameter. Of course if I do that, we have to throw away all we worked on so far. If we do the 16", we'd probably just do it in bicolor and skip the single color types.

On-camera lighting. I haven't really been that inspired to do that. Someone would really have to make a good case for why Cool Lights would do one. There are already so many out there. Of course I've thought about it. The major issue about those is that they need to be light. Plastic is the best way to do that but people always bitch about the plastic litepanels unit as if its cheap. I don't think cheap is what they were going for, most likely just keeping it light because a light meant for a hot shoe mount should be super light. Make it out of aluminum, sure it will be stronger but its also heavier like our LED 256 which is all aluminum.

Well Richard, with Epic-X coming home soon..(we hope) I'm definitely very interested as well on the bigger 1200/2400 fixtures, but will be sure to order some 256/600 as well, as far as for the ring light, absolutely a must have and look forward to your solution on that as much as I look to this larger LED fixtures, mostly because as many know here I'm all about GREENer every were possible with out loosing Image Quality.

10" on the Ring Light it is actually not too small at all, but you would also need to have a 16" for sure, so if only one needed to be done, then I would also go with the 16", just do everything possible to make it also with a dimmer, but the key here is to have it go as strong as possible and as light as possible with battery power to be of a variety of options, so to fit different camera set ups.

Thanks Ketch. Definitely a dimmer or two dimmers if bi-color and also definitely lightweight. Those ring light(s) would all mount to the rail system in the one I was designing to keep whatever weight there is off the lens.

I bought the LED600 because I liked the size, weight, portability and the ability to use them on batteries when needed.

But now I'm also really starting to like the light they produce. A mix between soft and directional that I find very interesting, especially to light faces. And the softbox allows for softer light when needed. From now on I'm taking them with me on nearly every shoot I work on.

I'm pretty sure I'll buy the 1200 and/or 2400, these are gonna be awesome tools too. Larger surface, so they will be softer, and also have more punch of course. Can't wait to see them.

Hey Richard, I wanted to mention that I spotted some CL LED600 units at the set of Doctor Who the other day. I am not sure if they were owned by BBC or by the rental company (which I believe is TAKE 2) but i was very happy to see your product going places!

Can't wait for your 2400 units and the ring light!

BBC bought those directly. Hehe, I'd love to have some production pictures on those units. They've also bought some for their (I think news) agency in China as well. Twentieth Century Fox has quite a few units too.

Yes we've been discovered. I've been so busy keeping up with existing production and sales that its taken a lot of time away from development on things like the LED 1200 and others.

Really Richard? Who told you that? Sounds like a smart little fella...

Hi Richard, I just read your post on dvxuser

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=2017639&postcount=212

... and I think its great that you are planning a AC only versions as well as AC/DC for the 1200/2400 models. Lots of exciting stuff. Reading through your post gave me an idea.

Would it be feasible to create a version of the 600 or 1200 where the LED's are spaced much further apart? The aim would be to create a larger surface area that out light comes from?

I didn't really consider that as I thought it might not be something people were looking for. If anything my perception is they want as many LEDs per sq. inch as possible to keep the panels as compact and bright as possible.

If we did that though, you would need to use wide flood LEDs which means the fixture wouldn't have a lot of throw and would be much more like a flo in output and quality of light. Thus you'd have to keep it relatively closer to the subject.

A version of the flood 600 with double the width and height might be useful for hitting large diffusion screens/umbrellas evenly
