  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

News from Cool Lights

Another request for Richard.

Another request for Richard.

Hi Richard, this may or may not be feasible but I want to put it out there.

<edited for clarity>

I was thinking about how flashlights send a beam of light using a reflective backing and in some cases there is a piece of plastic on the front shaped to a lens of some sort that helps make the light more parallel and beam like. This gave me an idea.

Would it be possible for you to make an attachment for your LED256 so it would do the same? It would be part snoot / part plastic lens and then with a few small air holes. It would then slot in where your current barn doors go. The goal being to create a daylight dedo aka LED pepper.

I would buy this from you in a heartbeat and I bet so would a bunch of other shooters.

Hi Jhoe,

The key question would be, what sort of behavior in the way of shadow rendering do you expect from this type arrangement.

For instance, what kind of flashlight are you thinking of? One of the traditional types with a bulb in the middle of a par reflector? Those will give spotlight, or one shadow type behavior like you would expect from a small fresnel or dedo. Is the flashlight LED based? When you put something in front of it, like your hand near a wall, what does the shadow look like? Yes it may put out a beam, but we care a lot about the type of shadow that instruments put out in our work so if you were expecting all the behaviors of the dedo, you might be disappointed because the multiple light sources involved in an LED instrument just won't allow the single shadow rendering like the single bulb in a good mirror (and lens) will.

Yes I see what you mean - I didn't think of that.
BTW - I've been using your diffuser to get rid of the lattice shadow from the barn doors
and it's a great design as there seems to be minimal light loss.

Hey Richard!

I've been following this thread for quite a while and have been wanting to get my hands on a couple of 600's. With all of your business, is there a new eta on those? It seems like they sell out as soon as they come in. Which is a good thing, but man, I'm starting to need to watch your site like a hawk.

Thanks for all you do.

Jon

The little 256s have become my favorite lights!!! All the features of the 600 in a small package that kicks!!! Just put one in a modified camera housing and used it in a pool with a Sony L batt on the back. HOT!!!

Yes, Michael Hastings from AquaVideo in Ft. Lauderdale built me a couple of housings out of PVC tube with Acrylic faceplates... he added a ball joint to a lead weight and viola!!! Coollights are on the bottom of a pool illuminating bodies!!!

Miltos,

I dont have any shots from the test but I will be shooting the real gig next week and I will be running a BTS camera that will have all the gear. I will post then.

Cheers,
Prio

Hey Richard. Curious how your lights (I own 2 LED-600 and love them) compare with the upstart FLo Lights?

They dont have as many acks as yours, been waiting on the 1200 news but they have a 1000 now. Not asking you to bash them, just compare yours.

thanks

They've had a 1000 for a long time. The 1200 will be quite a bit brighter than the 1000.

We're waiting on the 1200 carrying case to be finished now and LED 1200 itself will be going into production soon too. Pricing won't be out though till its close to being ready to ship.

Plus, the Flolight I bought that was advertised as 5600k was actually 4300k. Not even close and their customer service compared to Richards was sub par.

I think this is in reference to the new 1k that flolight just announced with increased CRI to 93 and more rugged, at the expense of long life, well relatively speaking, 25,000 hours only.

you know Richard, you can send my order for the 2 1200's without cases....

Thanks Paul. In my articles I wrote last year in the blog on LEDs I said you can't find a CRI 85 or above mono-color daylight LED and I still stand by that. So I think I'm not really buying the "CRI 93" claim. By the way, there's a thread on Creative Cow on this LED fixture which we are talking about (its technically called "LED 1024" now). They don't like Creative Cow here so I won't even try to post the link but its easy to find in the lighting forum. The poster says he needs minus green. You wouldn't need minus green with any CRI 90 or above fixture. That's the whole point is there is no green color bias in a high CRI fixture of any kind.

The only way to get above CRI 80ish is to go with RGB LEDs or bi-color like we're doing in the LED 1200 bi-color model. There won't even be any correction filters with that model as you don't need them. The fixture in question is still a mono-color daylight just like the previous model and our LED 600 and 256 so CRI 93 is not possible.
