News from Cool Lights

No, the LED 600 filters were not in the first generation LED 600s so that's why we carry them as a separate item for those that want to add them to their kit.

No ring light here Jay. Basic three point lighting.

I did use mild wrinkle reduction in Color which can give faces a slight glow.

Hi Frank,

Your shots look great! In regards to the wrinkle reduction in color, did you use a "soft skin" type plugin under the color fx tab or did you just add some blur? I've been trying to master that soft skin look in color with little success. Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks,

Omar

Omar, I learned the basic setup from lynda.com a long time ago. It starts with an HSL key to blur...a second blur is added and all three are sent to an alpha blend and then to output. of course there are many variables so just play around and save your effect. Then you can just drag, drop and tweek.

Frank,

thanks for the info, I'll definitely play around with that and will certainly check out the color tutorials on Lynda.com.

Funny, this is the third month in a row that I was just about to cancel my Lynda subscription only to find another reason to keep it going. They've got me feeling like Michael Corleone: every time I think I'm out...lol!

just thought i'd give a bump to this thread while complimenting richard on his lighting solutions. i received the led 600 (the daylight spot version) and love it. we used it on an interior day shoot to give the natural daylight a nice kick. we also rigged it up to a car hood (using red bricks) for a little fill on the driver. (i'll see if i have any pics). i must say we had that light running full power off a single red brick for at least 1 1/2 hours and it was still full when we dismounted. and so many people remarked on how great the price and value were. i agree and what they don't know is how great richard is to deal with too.

thanks to richard and reduser (i found coollights on this site) for making a lighting purchase well worth it.

now when is that led 1200 gonna show it's face?

Thanks Craig! I know it must seem super slow on the LED 1200 but we'll get there. Hopefully by end of summer. All our suppliers are super busy right now in China so we have to wait our turn on various items just like everyone else.

Hi Richard,

be sure to post on this thread when you are back in stock with LED600

Another Q for Richard. RE: pricing on shipping

I want to order the 2 bank flo (CL-255PMD) and a spot led600.
Should I order the flo now and then order the led in may when u r in stock
or should I wait and order the two together to reduce shipping costs?

Or is shipping the same on each item regardless?
Tx

I would say that if Fedex gives discounts for multiple items shipping all at once, its not very much. So I wouldn't worry about it and just order the items that are there now and the rest later. Thanks.

Great. I put in my order for the flo. I have another question regarding the led256
Using the np-f970 battery, approx how long does it power the light for?

Thanks for your order. There are so many variations and clones of that battery I am always hesitant to give expectations but lets say could be anything from 45m to 1 1/2 hours.

I received my 3 LED600 lights a week ago and immediately took them with me on a shoot. I'm already in love with them.

I also had 3 rented lightpanels, so I was able to compare. I was even surprised to notice that the LED600 have some nice improvements over the original lightpanels, like a handle to carry them easily, barndoors, the ability to switch some leds off line by line (5 switches + 1 master switch),... The softbox is great and easy to setup too.
The carrying bags are well made, compact and lightweight, with loads of pockets.

CRI seemed a bit lower than the "real" lightpanels (a bit greener), but they are also more powerful so you can add a 1/2 minus green filter (also included) without loosing too much light. The 1/2 minus green make the light a bit warmer too.

Here are a few suggestions to improve them even further :
- Add a 1/2 CTO acrylic filter (sometimes you want to be around 4300°K)
- Add a clear acrylic filter (just to protect the leds when there is no other filter, it's a bit scary otherwise)
- maybe I'm wrong, but I'm a bit concerned about the position and size of the dimmer knob, on the bottom of the light. It's seems to be a bit fragile and easy to break, sticking out like this. But hopefully I'm wrong.
- add a lighter diffusion silk on the softbox. The original one is great but a bit strong sometimes.

And great service from Richard.

Thanks Nils and Rob. I'll consider the 1/2 CTO, I have thought about that before.

Where would you put the dimmer knob? Seemed to be best protected where it is right next to the stand adapter.

Hey Richard, any plans for a battery adapter plate for the 2 bank dimmable flo?
It would be nice to have a portable soft light source like that.

Not at this time. Seems like LEDs are so much more suited for battery use. That being said, all you really need to run a flo on battery is a good inverter (of the right wattage for the fixture) and a 12v battery of big enough size to handle the job for the time you need it.

I believe there are some inverter / 12v battery combos I've seen before posted on this site.
