  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8

thanks...re-read the thread and came across the raw files....5K HD looks to be ok!
 
Yes it covers 5KHD clean! And in Full 5K and 5K WS it has a very little dark corners. So i think in 6K you will have darker corners. You have to zoom in a bit!
Don't go below 1.7 (my Epic say's it can), but than you lose control of your Iris and you have to take the lens off and on and everything is working fine again.

Thanks for the feedback, can you tell us anymore about your doc experience? What were you shooting + how were you able to get what you needed without going past 35mm?

Regarding the Iris Lock Issue... Have you tried it also with the new Epic Firmware? I was hoping that this would be fixed.

Tried it on Scarlet with 4.0.18, nothing has changed with that. I also checked via Sigma's tool and usb-dock for a new lens-firmware, but so far there isn't one.
 
In the thread about a group buy for a re-housed version of this lens, Jarred posted the following in response to a question about covering 6K:

Great news for anyone getting ether version of this lens. The re-housed one is tempting.
 
I have the 18-35mm right now and I am going to get to use it for a week. Any specific tests you guys would like me to do?
 
How short really is the focus throw? Is it similar to the 35mm f1.4? I HATED the focusing ring on that one, borderline unusable for me honestly. Did just not work for my shooting style. Is it smooth and dampened? Or clunky like some sigma lenses?

I just got my stock version in, and WOW....... the Optics are ridiculous . I was only able to do a handful of test shots since I am stuck home trying to finish a bunch of work.... but so far, this lens is blowing me away.

Thought it would be interesting to look at the MTF chart of the Sigme 18-35 1.8 (you can also see here on Sigma's site):

The performance up to 10mm is staggering. That is blisteringly sharp. That's almost a 97 or 98, which I've almost never seen on a MTF chart before (I'm used to seeing Full Frame lens charts, which ordinarily top out at 95). Clearly the advantage of making a lens that's designed for smaller image circle is the designs can get tighter, and more razored in.

At the edge's though (esp at 18mm), I'm wondering if we should be concerned? An APS-C sensor goes to about 12.5mm (as you can see on this chart), so if you were shooting at 4K on a Scarlet, I wouldn't be too worried. Only the last 20% of your image at the edges would have some fall off, which quite frankly is to be expected WO on a wide-angle.

However, an EPIC-X has a larger sensor. It goes to 16mm on an MTF chart (based off Phil's 1.29 Epic crop factor and knowing FF glass measures 20mm on an MTF chart). And Dragon goes to 17mm on an MTF chart (again, approx, using Phil's 1.17 crop factor vs FF)

If this lens is losing steam at 10mm on the MTF chart wide open (at 18)...then it still has another 7mm to go on Dragon. And 6mm to go on Epic (which I believe this zoom covers at 18). That means on an EPIC, wide open at 18, almost 40% of the image may not be usable.

I'm just going straight off the MTF charts and using math here, so someone with the lens at home maybe do the test?

My point is (and I say this as someone who is optimistic and has pre-ordered this lens): this lens looks like it's been designed to cover 12.5mm on an MTF chart: ie an APS-C sensor specifically. All the reviews on the net are raving about it's performance on THAT SIZED SENSOR.

They are not judging it on a larger EPIC/DRAGON sized sensor, which has 3.5 and 4.5 more MM's of edges that need to be covered (that's almost 40% more real estate). Point is...I'm confident the center performance is going to be insane. But I'm worried about edge performance at 5K and 6K on our larger sensored Epic's and Dragons, especially WO. Stopped down...it may improve.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm reading things wrong. But 10mm of awesome coverage at 18mm WO does not cover the 16mm of an Epic sensor, anyway you slice it.

Thx for that consideration Nick. So shooting 5k on a Scarlet Dragon, being a bit smaller than 5k Epic MX, will maybe be a limit for some then ... will be interesting to see.

Exactly. Shooting APS-C looks like it will be awesome. I'm just curious what happens at the edges on larger sensors...especially WO, and at wider focal lengths. I guess some tests will need to be done!!
 
I've had this lens for some time now, and I have to say that shooting on my 5K epic MX, I don't feel creatively limited by it in any way. Just wish it had that 300 degree focus throw ;)
 
I think it s wise to wait for the one with longer focus throw. I think this will truly be a breakthrough lens. I.m grabbing one for sure. With a 50 prime i have the wide covered. Just waiting for that 85 from Sigma now.
 
In case you haven't noticed, the lock-up issue has been fixed with the new beta-firmware.
