  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8

Picking mine up on my day off. (Saturday.)
 
I hope Red can prevent the aperture lockup problem in firmware. It's a drag for me because when I focus I hold down the button to open it all the way, then focus wide open, then close it down again.
Better yet, I've asked Red before to have a focus mode like 'single' but it first opens the lens, does it's focus wide open ( because it's more accurate ) then put the aperture back to where it was. All with one half press.
Good for those high stress run and gun shooting scenarios.

I just got this lens today. Really impressive. I'm quite thrilled with it. Zero breathing, really smooth and solid focus and zoom ring. And yes, the iris control on a RED cam does hang if you try to open up past 1.8. But, I'm mostly intending to shoot at 1.8.

How exactly do I download an R3D from this site?
Left-click doesn't work, and right-click doesn't work.
Tried using IE10 and Google Chrome.

EDIT: never mind, figured it out. Had to add to my Google drive first, and then I was able to download whatever R3D I wanted.

Hey Dan,

One thing I noticed is that the images are not so sharp. This lens is supposed to be as sharp as they come. Am I missing something?

These are all shot at f1.8.

i shot at 120fps at 1/5000 shutter so there was no glass between lens and subject, so there is not mistaking the character of the lens for filtration.

these are all from my motion stream and I'm hand focusing, so focus may be selective (again at f1.8) or maybe my eyes were blurry as I selected these grabs after 18 hours of being awake and running errands so maybe I didn't do the best selects.

these may not even be the most choice grabs - just wanted to put something out there for you guys.

all at f1.8 again just for reference.
 
Regarding aperture / I'm sure they just need to profile it, and after I get back from my little shoot for a few days I'll hit up Jarred to see if they want to borrow mine for profiling. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the aperture hang thing - just don't open "past" f1.8 to f1.7. Doesn't hang the aperture going up to other apertures, and reseating the lens solves the problem. Very minor thing if you aren't scroll wheeling the aperture like a madman (which I have ​been known to do before haha)
 
Aperture problem: I do scroll it like a 'mad man', because I have to focus as fast and accurate as possible. So I slam it open, focus and put it back. Holding the button down to get it open is where I lock up.

What I want is Red to do a 'DSLR like' focus : Have it focus wide open for me without the crazy f-stop shuffle.
How do you focus accurately ?
The focus peaking on the LCD is not as obvious as I'd like ( no color edge highlights ) so it's hard enough as it is.

Remember, the difference between 4K and 2K is just a very slight focus error. If you are serious about the 4K thing, you focus wide open.

It's not the best approach, many still lenses have focus shift issues...just try the other focusing aids and use them at the desired aperture...

Are you saying that focus can change due to the f-stop changing ? I've never seen that happen before.
Focusing wide open makes it much more obvious to get it right.
 
Thanks for the link Kaan. Seems to only happen on fast lens's , will have to see if the problem occurs on my Sigma 35 f1.4 and the new 18-35 1.8.
