  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8

Yep, very interesting lens. I hope hey keep the quality up, because i really like my 35/1.4 and if that 18-35/1.8 is similar well designed i think i'll get one.
FF would have been pefect, but it covers 4k on Scarlet, that's already enough for me, well if the performance is good, especially at 1.8. :)

A little heavy on the distortion side for my tastes, but I'm glad that Sigma has pumped out a high speed zoom, proving it can be done and for cheap. Hope other manufacturers follow suit. Everyone wins.

I made a quick/dirty illustration with Dragon 6k FF measurements, i hope i'm not too far off.

Yes Epic FF is only for FF lenses. No matter - this is a break through lens that will replace wide primes and won't pay the speed penalty.
Sharpness looks stellar. Wide open as well...
Can't wait....
 
Very good for Scarlet Dragon. Can't wait for DXO mark to publish the test report on it.

Yep, i just wanted to see the the "worst case". It should be fine in 5k on Dragon through the whole range as long as you get a copy which is a bit more centri than this samplec. I see slight vignetting at th right lower corner in a 5k Dragon crop on 18mm.
No matter - this is a break through lens that will replace wide primes and won't pay the speed penalty. Sharpness looks stellar. Wide open as well... Can't wait....

Agreed, can't wait too. It's going in areas where even primes are rare. The widest and fastest available prime (for Canon EF) is a mediocore 20/1.8 from Sigma. Hey Canon, where is your next 16-35, maybe at 1.4? ;)

Wow, I wasn't aware that speed could be had in a zoom, while maintaining any sort of optical quality. The F/1.8 stills from that test don't appear bad at first glance either. Someone re-house this little guy!
 
Why rehouse? Just get EFF and you are ready. Enough with this rehouse nonsense- it's 2013 you know:beer:
 
Distortion at 18mm doesn't look any worse than my Canon 17-40 or even my Cooke Mini S4 18mm.

Very interesting overall... I too would prefer a PL housed model. I just haven't found Cine-Mod'd glass to be very workable compared to real cine glass.
 
Big question for me - will it work auto focus on the RED Nikon mount??? what is the USB port and software all about???

AF should work on Canon and Nikon, the 35/1.4 works fine for example. The Lens itself doesn't have a USB-port, but there is a docking-station for those lenses. With that you can update firmware and modify AF-settings by yourself. A short demonstration-video i found:

With the EFF you don't physically touch the lens. It's all "drive by wire"
So what is the point of having "solidly built "? (whatever that means)
I guess it comes down to the personal preference- some people still drive the Hummer H2s- even though the manufacturer gave up on it...
 
So essentially you're saying it comes down to personal preference, unless its counter to yours, in which case you're going to attack it. Interesting...
 
I thought what I said was just the common sense based on 25+ years of experience.
