  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8

Has anyone done any testing of sharpness of the Sigma vs Zeiss ZF 25, 28, 35 (1st gen) by any chance? I have the older Zeiss lenses we used on the REDONE when it had the Nikon mount, but since getting our Epic have to use an annoying adapter. It would be great if these lenses could be replaced by this Sigma, would appreciate your thoughts/feedback...

Many thanks.

Build quality is great. Super sharp in the center at 18mm. Some nervous bokeh but overall quite good.

Probably going to sell bye 24mm, 35mm rokinons and 17-55mm IS for this. Hmm. Maybe get a 60mm macro to bridge the gap.

I want to try this on my EOS M but don't have an adapter. I can upload some C100 stills maybe or shoot with the 7D, which is unfortunately much softer than the EOS M.

I mean the thing is, where else are you going to find an 18mm f1.8 (which GL claims is actually T1.8) for $800? Then you tack on the 19-35 range, which is actually fairly ideal for s35, and it's very hard to overlook this lens (especially since it's producing acceptable results wide open).

Zoom ring is amazingly smooth, but the focus throw is tiny. Like 90º or less.

So far it's super super sharp with great micro contrast. Feels like an old 24-70mm (not the new one) on FF. Not bad.

Actually I'd have to say - I hate the old 24-70mm - tons of CA on the samples I've used.

To me, this is like the new 24-70 VII canon, but with actually better micro contrast and "mojo"

Yes, Dan, the sigma is way ahead.. Light drop-off towards the edges, breathing... Everything.
Shot a doc with the Sigma today. Had other lenses with me, but this one never came off the camera.
I can't wait for the cine-conversion with a longer focus throw.

What do you guys think of this combination:
[h=1]OConnor O-Focus Dual Mini Photo Set $1870[/h]Sigma 18-35 $800

$2670

You get a nice follow focus that can be used with any lens, adds more precise focus rotation.

I have the OConnor CFF1 with a Hard Stop Handwheel one one side and it makes a world of difference when using stills lenses. Using the 35 tooth gear makes it even better.

Shot on a Mark III and cropped to "5k" size to show coverage.

I have tried many times to go the Sigma route in past times when budget was an issue and wanted to save some money from Canon, and or wanted to get a lens that only Sigma had, like the SigMonster, but time after time I was let down do to their Quality Control Inconstancy...

I am very pleased to see this new 18-35 lens, as it seems they really are stepping up the game.

Matt are you sure you're crop for 5k isn't a little large?
I get none of this kind of drop-off, at any focal length.
I have a feeling that it will cover 6k at around 22mm, looking at the image circle enlarge as I zoom on a 1D.

5760 pixels/(36mm/27.7mm)=4432 pixels

Remember this is worst-case scenario... 18mm f1.8 for a brightly lit day exterior shot focused at near-infinity. And if it works better on the actual camera than on a crop from the 5D sensor, so be it.

Before you ask, no lens hood or filter.

Are you saying that focus can change due to the f-stop changing ? I've never seen that happen before.
Focusing wide open makes it much more obvious to get it right.
Do you mean in a different way than from a hyperfocal effect?
I thought that most lenses had differing depths and points of focus ad various iris settings.. Due to the physics of optical systems.
Or do you mean that the iris control moves the focus cams as well in this lens?

The day after they were scheduled to hit store shelves, I just called a local store in Toronto (Aden Camera) that is usually quite good for having things in stock. And as it turns out they happened to get the first couple in stock a couple of hours earlier, so I went in right away and bought one. I consider it blind luck.

Thanks Kaan,
Joe
