  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Scarlet frame rates

Come on folks. If you are really NEED slow motion camera why not to rent EPIC ? Plenty of them in LA area! Or you can even have FANTOM for pretty much the same price (and much lower pixels - ha ha)! Think of workflow - not gadgets!

!!!!!!!!!!! 1K should not exist on RED !!!!!!!!!!!!

120fps 1K may not be great, but I'll take it...and make even use it sometimes. Take everything you can get. If you can't make something interesting with it you're not thinking.

Will never happen - and you don't want to meet Jim's lawyers - and the chips are not the same - the weight is not exactly the same.

It's perfectly legal to do anything you want for something you own.

This is true and not true at the same time.

You can do whatever you'd like to your car, its if you want to drive it on the road where it becomes illegal. Same with your house.. there are things you can do to it if you do it yourself but its illegal to sell your house that way, or for you to hire somebody to do it for you.

It can also be illegal for you live in if you do something to make it unsafe.

For those of us who bought Epics this is a business - if we had to rent them at Scarlet prices we would be screwed, I mean totally screwed. You can't disagree, and tell me this is all about art, because we're talking about big cash investments here. At that level it's not about art at all, it's about paying rent and feeding families.

Jim will not screw his best customers just because you want something worth 35K for 10K

So you're advocating RED artificially limit capabilities in order to protect a higher end product? Isn't that what we accuse of killing Sony?

Talk about cry babies. I'm sorry but I have no sympathy for you. If you bought an Epic not knowing what Scarlet was going to do then you weren't paying attention and your 'family will starve' because you made a bad decision not because you were tricked. Until the Scarlet-X announcement the spec sheets still had 5k @ 30fps for the Scarlet-X (although a price point around $12k). So when you ordered an Epic you thought you were buying a camera which offered higher framerates and lower compression... nothing more.

The Scarlet-X does 12fps @ 5k for $10k.
The Epic-X does 120fps @ 5k for $35k.

That's 10x the performance for 3.5x the price.

So you're honestly going to complain about someone asking for a 30 -> 48 fps speed bump while you get a 1,000% more performance for 350% the price? Even if you doubled the specs of the scarlet you would still be getting 50% more per $.

I don't suppose we have a rough ETA on these newer frame rates? And if they are already available and I just haven't updated, feel free to throw large objects at me.

You gonna be kidding :) 1K is absolutely useless!!!!

To you. 1k is absolutely useless to you.

Unless you making WEB videos :)

Are you dissin' web video? Really? If you are then you're completely out of touch with how much work there is / how much money can be made by shooting web stuff. Come to think of it that could be a great thing for me - one less person to compete against for jobs.

After 20++ years of working in T.V. advertising production I now shoot almost exclusively web video and make 3 times as much money shooting for the same ad agencies as before.

1K @ 120fps may not get used all that often, but as a green screen element overlaid on part of the frame it would be great. In fact right now on Canadian TV there is a spot for Canadian Tire that I shot with a Scarlet - it has a Banner drop over part of the frame that was shot in 2k @ 60fps… looks great!

So I know that Scarlet was / is limited in what it can do, but you never know when something you thought was useless could get you a paying day of shooting.

I think it was said that the update would be coming in a couple of weeks.

Almost every single web project we work on wants a 1080p master as well.

And he followed that up with... "1K @ 120fps may not get used all that often, but as a green screen element overlaid on part of the frame it would be great." Pretty easy to get a 1080p master from that kind of use.

Thanks for the help guys. Hard to keep up with all the news sometimes.

Also, not sure why any shooting option would be snuffed at; if you have zero use for it, don't use it. Chances are ones who guffaw at options being too below them aren't shooting 4k features exclusively anyway.

Your whining is nauseating. Why did you spend so much on shoulder rigs or whatever? You should have bought an Epic. Your own fault, me thinks.

Anyone individual who buys an Epic body that is unequipped to handle a rigorous shoot seamlessly, with perfect back-focus, handheld rig, quality tripod head, comprehensive quantities of media and battery power to never hamper a shoot, matte-box, ND filters, xlr inputs, cheese plates and arms, cases, stations, Red Rocket, additional sharp focus pulling monitor, PL and EOS mounts to serve different budgets is investing in the wrong area, and will ruin shoots for the gain of a currently, still widely un-utilisable "K" and high frame rates.

I have already made great money, and i have literally only had my scarlet for just over 3 weeks. im not a camera rental house, im a freelance DP with no dry hire, so you pick your priorities, ill pick mine mate.

IMO 4k/4khd hdrx will come eventually.

Of the web video work that I've done.. a lot finish at 1080p and a lot finish below! 120fps@1k wouldve been perfect for my most recent work (a client was 'overreaching' what they wanted and at what budget they wanted it at) but I can wait, maybe play with twixtor...

On a side note, I want to add to what Gavin said - I think its ridiculous to think that Red would deliberatly hamper any advancement of the Scarlet firmware to somehow protect Epic customers. If Scarlet manages to shoot 5k@24fps I don't see how that affects the Epic users. Unless you're telling me the ONLY reason they chose Epic over everything else was the ability to get 24fps@5k? In which case, by that reasononing, those Epic users would be very annoyed that Scarlet users could upgrade to Dragon, thus suppassing a non-upgraded Epic, no?

With the greatest of respect to Rob, while he may view Epic users as Reds 'best customers' I think that the most recent NAB showed that technology is rapidly changing and both Epic and Scarlet are llikely to evolve through firmware, Dragon and beyond.

Lets not turn future firmware hopes / requests / wishes into a dong measuring exercise.

Yes. In 2 weeks we are releasing a pretty monumental build for Scarlet and Epic... Apart from a bunch of other goodies, additional resolutions will appear... including the high frame rate 1K on scarlet.

I can't wait to see this new firmware...

While I realistically don't expect 24fps at 5K, we might see 24fps at 4.5K (2.40:1).
Don't want to speculate much, but Jarred did use "Monumental Build" and "Additional Resolutions" in the same sentence !

Any plans on upgrading the frame rate past 300 any time on the EPIC? I want 1000fps, but I don't want to spend as much as vision research want me to spend on the phantom camera line, with their 3.0MP cameras.....

testing at 400 right now... if you need 1000fps.. rent a phantom :)

On a sidenote, the Epic that was able shooting 300fps at 2K is now being tested at 400fps...

Man, can't wait to see what the Scarlet will be able to do ! :)
