  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm thrilled beyond belief that we're about to get new resolution options in addition to 120fps at 1k. RED is being rather cryptic, on all fronts, about what the update will feature exactly, but I will say that any of the following will be awesome: 4k 48fps, 4k hdrx 24fps, 5k 24fps. I think we all want 5k @ 24fps, especially those of us coming into the RED world from a 5D Mark II, where our 17mm lens is super wide. Also, 5k is closer to 4k resolution when debayered, though I didn't want to get to technical in this post.

Any other predictions or wants?

5k 24fps would be awesome but I really don't see it coming for MX, with Dragon maybe.

In a GOD sake tell me WHERE we can use ONE K footage? Even with 120FPS. It is a funny joke like VGA video on top notch DSLR'S.

JIM please discard everything below 3K. Forever.

+1 (for me, personally)

but on the other hand: if it comes to reality, we are not forced to use it.
and if someone wantes to use it ( think of a picture in picture ) can be happy with this feature.

i know, there are a lot of voices here, which are singing: if you want 120 - buy an epic.

but.

there are a lot of people here, they can´t afford an epic. so, 120 fps might be helpful for a lot of people.
it´s not fair to say: don´t make it, because i don´t need it.

there are a lot of other people, they might need it...

I don't think getting rid of everything under 3k is a good idea... for the time being 2k is still relevant, and for people who need 60fps 2k is still a great option.

Also, I can say with 99.999% accuracy that we will not see 5k 24fps, or 4k 48fps on scarlet with out Dragon.

120 fps at 1k is a novelty, and actually the more I think about it, I can't imagine to what purpose I would personally use this?

@Louis, why are these not a possibility? Think about it, we can have 3k at 48fps and hdrx 24fps. Now, if they figure out 4k hdrx at 24fps that would also mean that 4k at 48fps is possible…. and therefore 5k at 24fps would be possible. Again, I say possible, because although they could technically do it, why would they? Which, I think is the argument that you're presenting.

My main use for 1k footage will be for green screening. By rotating the camera, then green screening that vertical, it should work perty good, even in a 4k background. I have some scenes where i need to get moving strings of a cello, where I'm hoping to use that technique. I know this is slightly junky, from a epic viewpoint, but I think will look cinema quality in a 2k dcp.

Come on folks. If you are really NEED slow motion camera why not to rent EPIC ? Plenty of them in LA area! Or you can even have FANTOM for pretty much the same price (and much lower pixels - ha ha)! Think of workflow - not gadgets!

!!!!!!!!!!! 1K should not exist on RED !!!!!!!!!!!!

While this is logical, Jarred has already stated that they are working on a way to adjust the compression on the X track so 4k hdrx will be possible on scarlet. So if your shooting 8:1 at 4k the A track will be 8:1 and the X track would be 12:1 or even 18:1. Obviously this is just an example, but that is what Jarred said they are working on. So I wouldn't count on 4k 48fps on MX Scarlet. Dragon....she's a whole new beast. I sure hope they will :)

ummmmmmmmmm lets us not forget you cant view 4k footage over the web or cable tv. for those of us that shoot music videos and commercials 120 @ 1080p would be f**King awesome. and we dont make much money shooting music videos thus the reason we have scarlets and not epics.

if im not mistaken the phatom shoots 2k for no less than 1000 a day to rent one ummmmmmmmm yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaa doesnt sound like a good idea to me. 120 @ 1k 24 @ 5k would be awesome

These days I tend to do a lot mption graphic design, and I would love 120fps at any resolution. It didnt dictate why I got a Scarlet, but if it can be included in the next firmware build then great!

Agreed if you need Slo - mo rent an Epic.

With every camera now coming out with stonking fast frame rates apart from BM 2.5k effort I foresee this will be the "in" effect of the coming years & maybe something to use with moderation not abandon.

Unless you making WEB videos :)

Bottom line is this. If you need high fps for television / film you're going to be wanting to rent an epic.

For the web, specific graphic design, or something specific in narrative project that requires only 1k, then its fine. People use things in many different and creative ways and I tend to find it good policy not to say that because something is useless to me, it should also be useless for everyone else.

Also, we still have no specifics on what framerates / resolutions are going to be involved in this next build. Who knows, maybe it might be more or less than advertised?
My chickens are remaining decidedly un-counted.

+1

120@1K can be useful for SD and web projects. Even if I really only want it to shoot a cat chasing a laser pointer.

The "missing" options I'd use would be:
1) HDRx at 25 fps (ideally 4K/Quad HD, but 3K would do)
2) 50 fps at 3K (48 fps is OK but for PAL land 50 is neater- easier to avoid light flicker etc. without having to think about it too hard on set).
3) 4.5 K or 5 K at 25 fps (mostly to get the full width of the sensor if you really need it, or if you need to grab stills from the video stream).

I *am* shooting for the web (there's money in it, you know!) but I agree 1K 120 fps is of limited utility; if I really needed the frame rate I'd hire an Epic (or even a Phantom) for the day. I can see some possibilities, but I'd be constructing shots purely around the limitations of the tech I think.

By the way, remember the benefits of oversampling. Even for the web delivering full HD H.264, the difference between footage acquired with an AF100 and that acquired at Quad HD from a Scarlet is like night and day, not to mention the myriad benefits of RAW for getting things just so in post.

Cheers, Hywel
