  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Scarlet Footage?

5D3 is indeed no scarlet, but at the same time, so many are desperate for something new/better quality, they may resort to it. As someone who bought a lower end DSLR just to see if I could transition from 3D film making to live action film making, I am very very eager to get a tool that better matches the quality I am striving for. I dont think the 5D3 will be what will fit my professional needs, but if the scarlet is 10k for a decent functioning system, I may have to get a 5D3 in order to earn enough funds to afford a scarlet. But at that point, I may just save for the epic (or w/e body is available by then) Honestly it depends on the DR, file format compression of the 5D compared to the scarlet on a quality/price ratio/release date.

Plus I dont want a scarlet fixed, I want interchangeable which means buying some of the red mini primes, so yeah...gettin pricey (for a little poor guy its pricey, if I was well established it would be pocket change im sure ;) )

If I cant afford to buy one, I will definitely be renting epic or scarlet for bigger projects. :)

This is what I was saying. Not so much from a cost stance but more for timing. I shoot from October to Mayish usually, as do some others I know. If they can offer a similar frame rate, a 4:2:2 codec, no more aliasing/line skipping and true HD, as well as they said(rumored) Dynamic Range jump could interest alot of people. Look every one on REDUSER knows it isn't pro cinema tool. And people with the ability to wait for the Scarlet will. But some can't afford rentals daily, or it isn't convenient as shooting/traveling locations could conflict with rental options. I'll merely say "CAMERA B" which is in reference to any other camera that would be available to allow you to work while waiting, or possibly replace.

Agreed

There is a void. People will fill it with whatever they can until they find the piece that fits perfectly; whether that's Scarlet, Epic, FS100, AF100, 5D MkIII, or whatever...

haha love the picture. The problem with the filling of the void, is it still costs money. Money to be used towards the camera initially wanted. I'm personally not someone who likes to spend money to fill a void. I'd rather save and buy the camera I want. I bought a 7D when everything for Scarlets looked bleak. Mostly to shoot stills, as I planned to rent cameras to shoot. It got difficult as I had to travel. So I got the 7D set up to shoot. Would I like that money back to use towards the Scarlet I plan to buy now? Absolutely. But this time around, as we're clearly getting closer with cameras going out the door filling the void won't be a fill for some. I have a hard time spending money on something that is half or a portion of what I really want. So i'll fully invest in whatever I get. Maybe it's a different POV for me but when I put my money and time into something, I'd rather do it fully rather then skipping steps and filling voids with mediocre replacements or fillers. I fill my voids with graphics and editing which can be a blessing in ways.

I hope it rolls out a week after Epic X is being delivered..
I doubt they can build enough that fast after the Epics are rolling out though. They did say they want to have enough in stock to prevent having to be back ordered on them.

Just seems that there are only two scenarios that can be true.

A. There is still a missing part for the lens, if the source says they don't know when it'll be available, Scarlet could take another year for all we know in which case I'm out and will be back for Epic X later in life.

B. There's a definite date on lens part availability as I'm sure the part manufacturer is able to provide this information. If this is the case, RED theoretically should be able to give us an availability date seeing as how Scarlet is ready to roll once the last issue with the lens part was taken care of.

Either way, I hope this camera is released soon : )

Or........

C.) Scarlet is already ready and waiting for X,XXX amount of Epic X sales before distribution.

This would be fantastic although If we are to believe what Red is saying, there is still a lens issue.

I would hope that RED isn't stupid enough to hold the sale of Scarlets just because they want to sell a certain number of Epics-X first, because the longer they delay Scarlet, it increases the chances of another company to develop a similar product and steal potential customers.

Who ever has the best product for the least amount of $$$$ gets my money. Simple enough.

Step on the gas RED.

I feel like I'm in the target market for Scarlet as I work as a cinematographer for a production company that does film and video content for the web. We shoot almost everything we do on 5Ds and 7Ds, and while the other cinematographers and I are able to achieve pretty compelling imagery via these cameras, the idea of a relatively cheap 3K RAW professional cinema camera is incredibly enticing. The fact of the matter is that every month that goes by without Scarlet's release, RED loses out on potential Scarlet buyers. Two of the cinematographers at my company made the jump to the AF100, and one bought an F3. I'm holding out for Scarlet in hopes that it'll release by spring 2012, but if it doesn't and Canon releases its rumored S35 sensor video camera I'll throw down cash for that just to make the upgrade. I don't think RED realizes how much of the potential Scarlet market is willing to settle for an imperfect camera that exists, as opposed to a perfect camera that doesn't exist.

Nailed it right on the head Sean. :thumbup1:

Especially if they keep bumping up the price...

I actually do think that RED realizes that people are purchasing other cameras. I mean, they aren't blind and they certainly aren't stupid. In the time that Scarlet has been coming to life, we've had:
  • Panasonic GH1
  • Panasonic GH2
  • Canon 7D
  • Canon T2i
  • Canon 550D
  • Canon 60D
  • Panasonic AF-100
  • Sony F3
  • Sony FS-100
  • Sony NEX-VG10
  • A slew of other consumer HD cameras appropriated for indie use.

And yet pretty much everyone I know who has one of those cameras (and that isn't DOF mad) would be happy to purchase a Scarlet if they can 1) ROI the camera or 2) sell the camera as a way to recoup the expense.

That being said, the sooner we see Scarlets on the market, the better - for everyone.

5d3 is no scarlet and canon rumors are just as rumory as red. I'll believe it when I see it

we don't know what the 5d3 is, so we can't say it's not a scarlet... nor do I really know what is scarlet. I know I want a scarlet more right now, but if a canon 5dIII or 6dI came out, and it was meant for video with a really good raw codec that was close to redcode (no jello cam). 2-4k picture. I would not think twice to buy it. I need a good camera, and have been making a lot of project I wished were shot in red (R1 does not work for me). At this point if something came out that was good, I'm all over it. Would it affect me buying a red... no! But it may affect me buying 2 or more reds which is my plan. Buying another camera is nothing personal, it's business. I'm still a huge fan of red and applaud what they are doing. Perfection takes a while.

I never thought I'd join this school of thought, but I must say I have looked into F3 and AF100 recently plus others. It may be if scarlet is a ways off, I may go for an epic of some flavour. But yes if a 2-3k camera similar price to Scarlet... F3. What's holding me back is I plan make a move to bigger projects soon, so I'm making do for a bit longer to see what happens.

Jims words earlier this month about Epic-x for august keep me from going over. Thanks for that Jim!

And now the Sony A77 which will shoot 1920X1080 60p on a 1.5crop sensor @28mbs to SDHC for $1399..
I have been a huge fan of RED since the DVXUSER days when it was getting trolled hard.. I was jumping for joy when Red one came out even though I couldn't own one. I was ecstatic to hear about 3k for 3k and stuck by every step of the way with all the improvements and price increases.. At this point I'm starting to back off and re-evaluate EVERYTHING.. Everything from distributing on the web to straight to DVD avenues... I will someday own a RED camera of some flavor but hate to say I'm actually willing to say goodbye to Scarlet should it not be released soon...

I'm sure others can relate.

What about the Scarlet Secret Ingredient?

Depending on the project, I doubt your client could readily tell the difference between compressed output at 1080p that was shot
on the Panasonic GH2 and intercut with Scarlet to match

Of course, I'd rather rent an Epic-M than buy all the forementioned...

The biggest benefit I see to selecting the Red Scarlet Fixed (aside from Raw and framerate) for 5 TIMES the price of a Panasonic GH2 is that from the ground up it was intended for use in
professional 3D stereo application

You can't have just one Scarlet and miss out on all the 3D fun!

That being said, I think it is very sad that we have never seen Stereo 3D footage from Scarlet yet online, after all this time...

Hopefully, someone from Red will indulge us in the 3rd Dimension?
