I understand the production Scarlet's are tied up due to one last lens issue.

Are there any plans in the near future to release any more footage? Screen grabs? The little army of Scarlets is still fully functional isn't it?

Just very eager to see some more footage from this cam as I am sure many are.. Is there a specific reason for not releasing some more appetizers before the main entree?

We're starving here!!

Well, maybe it's just me, I'm on day 23 of a juice fast..

Mmmmm, Scarlet.....

Well, it's been said a good deal recently that the RED team is pretty tied up with getting Epic-X out the door. Remember, a lot of the work that goes into Epic-X really creates the framework for the other cameras. Even the firmware, from my recollection, is unified. Which basically means that every step forward you see for Epic-X is a step forward for Epic-S and Scarlet. Once that happens, I'm pretty confident we'll see footage from both Scarlets and Epic-S before long; and I'd imagine we'd also see it before the new cameras begin shipping en masse.

I think a lot of the development has been in software, and as such things keep getting better quite rapidly and they'd rather not release things that don't accurately represent the quality they expect from the shipping camera. I mean, that lion footage had to be debayered using straight Epic methods...you can be sure that lion footage will look much better when the software is optimized for Scarlet.

I wonder if Jarreds skateboarding footage had to go through the same process?

It's seems very likely that the reason we have only seen limited Scarlet footage is because the camera won't be released until spring of 2012.

You think? Why?..

I highly doubt that. I mean its reasonable. I'm still a strong believer we'll see it this year. Reason being several people asked over on the RECON board, as did I whether we'd be victims to the new pricing structure for Scarlet/Epic S purchases. And Jarred or Jim replied we'd be fine as long as we paid attention.

I don't think we'll be waiting for spring because it just wouldn't be good business for Red to delay the Scarlet release knowing that there are a number of cameras likely to be released which for some, perhaps many, may consider as an alternative just because it's available and is good enough. At this stage a camera with Scarlet specs, while still ahead of anything else won't stay "that far ahead" for much longer. Although I don't anticipate buying my Scarlets until Spring, I hope very much that the camera will be in the hands of those of you who need it now by the end of November. That's my conservative estimate.

That Which We Know
  • We don't know everything.
  • Something may go wrong and cause an unforseen delay.
  • Epic-M is in stock - now - with steady production.
  • Epic-X is expected to be released next week.
  • Epic-X, Epic-S, and Scarlet have a unified firmware.
  • There are serious supply considerations which may still affect production.
  • Future Scarlet owners will not be bitten by the increased prices of 2012 if they pay attention.

That Which We Have Been Told and May Assume To Remain True
  • Scarlet is being developed more or less in tandem with Epic.
  • Scarlet's delivery will trail Epic's by an unknown amount of time.
  • That unknown amount of time is dependnet upon the ease with which full scale Epic production is brought online and stabilized.
  • Scarlet Fixed will come first.
  • Scarlet Cinema/Interchangeable will come later.

That Which We May Surmise
  • The logistics of Scarlet Fixed will look significantly different than Epic due to the different internal structure of the camera and the need for lens servos and elements.
  • RED, right now, has put most of their focus on finishing up Epic and getting it to what they consider a "launch ready state".
  • Because of that, current work and development on Scarlet has slowed somewhat.

All of that being said, I firmly believe that we will be seeing Scarlet for sale by the end of the year; very likely towards the end of Fall. But that's just a lot of conjecture, isn't it!

Friend: When are you going to give up trying to guess when the Scarlet will be available?
Scarlet Drone (me): Never! I can't live the button-down life like you. I want it all: the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles.

The doldrums of summer have been unkind to us waiting for Scarlet. The EPIC guys have light on the horizon at least. Scarlet however, sounds like it has become a red headed step-child afterthought.

I feel the same. Obviously those who have been waiting for the Epic have been waiting a great deal of time as well. But now the 5D3 is rumored to be coming out in October. Not saying it will overtake the Scarlets market, but it could grab a few of us waiting for the Scarlet are still looking at RedUser watching Epic news come down the pipeline with little to none about the Scarlet. And Scarletuser is still a shadow or a figment of what it was haha.

The longer it takes the more purchases they'll lose. Not everyone has a budget to rely on a Rental forever.

Makes total sense to me, make as much $$$ from the wealthy with the flagship Epic, then get what you can from the poor scum of the earth with that little whore called the
Scarlet!!!
(BTW, just joking...Love RED, the Epic, Scarlet, etc.., but this is capitalism and like the Titanic, those on the top (Hollywood crowd), will be served first before the masses, especially since there isn't anything better price range out right now in the market. Scarlet with a release parallel in terms of weeks with the Epic-X, might also perhaps hurt sales of the Epic for those on the fence between the two who happen to have more money than sense and actually don't know the actual specifications of each model and just want the Red image so to speak... If I was RED, damn right I'd serve the rich first too. They pay for my RED jet god damn it, plus I love that book , "the girl with the dragon tattoo!" IMO, the Scarlet is ready...but RED has to sell at least a first batch of X, whatever that number is, first. It pains me too, but this is just simple mathematics and we are all chicken heads if we don't realize this. :)

So do you guys think it will cost around $6k like Ted has been saying or $10k like a few others have been rumoring? Because I thought the $10k price is what the projected cost was going to be after the price increase.

Well, I think that depends on what you need.

As has been discussed in this thread before there is a difference between a package which will allow the camera to function and a package which will allow the camera to work - as in on a typical production multi-hour multi-day production.

I think the former will probably run about $6K. That was the last official word we had. But this will not be everything someone needs to run off and shoot a feature length indie film over the course of a week; it will be very barebones and would be limited on media and battery. Both of those can be significant price boosters. It might let you shoot a few scenes a day, but I would be very surprised if it included enough battery and media capacity for a constant production day.

I think the latter - a setup which would allow people to shoot for more than an hour or two at a time before having to recharge their battery and dump their card - will run closer to $10K.

Ultimately, this is subjective. If your work requires rolling an hour or two a day with a break somewhere in there, the package offered by RED might be all you need. If you are quick and have thoroughly planned shots, you can get away with a whole lot in a couple of hours. But this is, of course, just even more conjecture.........

5d3 is no scarlet and canon rumors are just as rumory as red. I'll believe it when I see it

5D3 is indeed no scarlet, but at the same time, so many are desperate for something new/better quality, they may resort to it. As someone who bought a lower end DSLR just to see if I could transition from 3D film making to live action film making, I am very very eager to get a tool that better matches the quality I am striving for. I dont think the 5D3 will be what will fit my professional needs, but if the scarlet is 10k for a decent functioning system, I may have to get a 5D3 in order to earn enough funds to afford a scarlet. But at that point, I may just save for the epic (or w/e body is available by then) Honestly it depends on the DR, file format compression of the 5D compared to the scarlet on a quality/price ratio/release date.

Plus I dont want a scarlet fixed, I want interchangeable which means buying some of the red mini primes, so yeah...gettin pricey (for a little poor guy its pricey, if I was well established it would be pocket change im sure ;) )

If I cant afford to buy one, I will definitely be renting epic or scarlet for bigger projects. :)
