  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New MacPro predictions? Hopes? Fears?

There are a few things to increasing performance. Forbstarters, the way the ISA, chip and techniques, as well as optimization for a ancient Unix like systems, and its c language. What happened is that the chips become bigger and bigger trying to optimize the logical system, this further takes up more space, reducing the performance per area, though maybe achieving a better IPC, just you vsn got less fires in. Now packaging affects transference off and on chip, a big deficit can be caused by thus, as can be seen in memory. So the closer you can pack the memory into the processor the better (realise what is going to happen in the market here, and who has which technology that suites which market). So, on the same die is best (apparently, but). However, processes for processors are Ill suited to cheap dense memory, and static ram is big. There has been some attempts to produce a go between process, but I suspect that is a compromise in performance at least. Now, 1-3 transistor ram is interesting relying on substrate capacitance, however how suitable the process it would be for processors I don't know (either forgotten or didn't get to it before I gave up). However, you can run normal dram much faster with much wider internal data paths on chip with on chip processing circuits, and very cheap . The problem is that these dram processes have few layers and no complex processor can go on them. I'm working on some calculation engine for this. We might be able to mate a conventional due into a memory die containing calculation circuits and memory and main memory. The whole GP-GPU thing will start to look like a bad dream.. Let's visit that too. The way you design things can give better performance density at lower transistor counts. But GPU standards have been set, and a set standard restricts redefinition to a more effective one. But once you obtain the best, then it is time to make less changes.

There will be a new MacBookPro/AMD 460 mobile version and... that's probably it. If we're 'lucky' with Kaby Lake CPU's, thus USBC.

The underlying focus (sub text) will be on "integration" with Apple Watch/Apple Pay/iOS.

iMacs should, also, hold out for Kaby Lake. i7 7700k Base frequency of 4.2 with 4.5 boost is good, 'cause thermals.

ARM will not be in desktops.

MacPro, if still alive, might get minor X99 bump and "good enough" AMD gpu's... But they'll probably hold out for Skylake X, again if the product is still alive? We're still constrained to a 450 Watt power envelope with the Cylinder. In other words, still optimised for Final Cut Pro.
(Correct me if I'm wrong with Premiere/AE 15.3's focus on GPU performance is applicable to OpenCL/AMD?).

I'd love to stand corrected, and the whole desktop product stack rumours are true.

On a related note to 'pro' (as in Apple's - non enthusiast - view on pro).

If/when nVidia release web drivers for Pascal on Mac...

Those on a budget, will keep their 2010-2013 thunderbolt equipped Macs, buy an Atikio box and a... 75 watt 1050ti! No messy/scary soldering, just a kext mod.

Here's how the 15.3 updated Premiere and AE perform with Pascal GPU's.

I'm not sure what the (cuda performance) analogy is for Red/Davinci/Blur Nodes etc is, someone here will undoubtedly illuminate me ;-)

May I present to you the fastest desktop in history as of 1987 Nicholas, The Acorn Archimedes:

AcornArchimedes-Wiki.jpg

The speed of a unheard of speed of a large Vax mini computer in a desktop. Left the PC stone cold dead road kill. Unfortunately they did not pursue the business sector like they wanted, but Arm reigned as the fastest desktop processor for a while into the DEC Strong Arm processor. Back when Arms were simpler.

Nice find WM.

Yes, I remember them. (I'm 48).

Cheeky man, you know what I meant ;-) Apple's A10 in tomorrow's desktop announcement, or lack thereof.

One good turn deservers another...

Origins of ARM/RISC: Enjoy.

Yeah, I so wanted one back then. Just pulled it off Wikipedia, has some good information on the history of Acorn and the Arm processor. Has a picture of the two founders, one of which with a very cool Steve Jobs look before Steve Jobs did it likely. Those were the days, if only I knew what I know now about high efficiency graphics and computing back then, the stuff I could have done.

I think I still have a 80 mip+ misc processor to put in a zx-81 somewhere. I also wanted to try to use it to put vector graphics on the Atari VCS, and onto my Vectrex on the lead up to a new vector game system. The Misc processor is a vastly superior 16 bit+ design for similar size to 8 bit processors. Simple Compressed movable game and vector graphics with filling and textures, and 3D graphics, hardware, on something probably similar to in complexity to a BBC micro, even C64, or Vic-20, but 100 times high performance in 1981-1983. But now we know, but that was back then

The ARM integrated chipset hub really established a basis for integrated chipsets. Long live the Acorn 3010:

Thanks for the Link.

Looks like they took an iMac and made it an iPad add an ipen and some other useless addition  #honesty

Meh on the touch, at least they had the 'courage' (common sense!) to cram a 980m in there. Impressive.

We all wouldn't be bitching and moaning quite so hard if Apple had just FREAKING added the 980m(s) an an OPTION (mid cycle) and kept the cpu's exactly the same.

*kicks cat*

980m is nice, but it's last year's GPU... So, meh...

Microsoft did a lot right with the Surface Studio and i7 Surface Book. They missed the mark with outdated GPUs in the lineup and lack of TB3 on the Studio. Still looks like a kick-ass Windows workstation for mid-level graphics work, illustration/ print/ photo work...

What I think I liked about the whole Microsoft presentation today is their focus on creative professionals. All things considered they have offered up some compelling hardware options and a pro attitude to match.

Looks like that old Apple patent from around 5 years ago, or the HP computers. It doesnt bend down low enough. I was going to getba drafting table , tilt that slightly then bend the screen nearly flat, so its all o a similar plain.

However nice, once again showing Apple.

Now to go and see the HP version, as there was only one model of z1 left on the stone whembI looked recently.

Yeaaah, that's right, put that in your Pipeline and smoke it Timmy!
:wink5:

$2999 for an i3 little 28 inch draft screen, no mention of studio grade calibration rec 2020 or HDR support. Pass the bullet (that one with fashionable colored dynamic wave for the trendy people, and shoot it". Ahh isn't that a better use for a $2999, $1000 computer?

Guys, look at the HP consumer i7 similar unit, even hang it over the desk to use on screen piano keyboard.

I can start talking now.... ;)

You guys are going to want the new MBP. 4 x TB3 ports FTW! The LG monitor seems pretty sweet too, I've got one being delivered here soon-ish. Hoping for early next week, but unsure.

4GB AMD graphics + 16 GB Ram. This can't be real.

The TB3 ports are nice, though.

that was it?
Going to order a Z840 tomorrow...
Anyone a 6 core dual 700 Thrashcan?

new imac? or just mbp refresh and monitors, hoepfully fcpx update
