  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New MacPro predictions? Hopes? Fears?

I can start talking now.... ;)

You guys are going to want the new MBP. 4 x TB3 ports FTW! The LG monitor seems pretty sweet too, I've got one being delivered here soon-ish. Hoping for early next week, but unsure.

The new MBP does looks nice, but not a single word on the MacPro? For real?

Guys it has Touch ID so you can buy more watch bands with your thumb print.

New MBP is supposed to be configurable to 32GB, but I was not able to clarify if that option will be immediately available. Got my hands on one last week, entry 15" i7 - 16GB, 256GB SSD... Very nice system. At times I think I'd like stylus and touch support on the display, but then when using 15" and larger notebooks I usually find myself glad to have a screen free of fingerprints and a system where I can just keep my hands on the keyboard region. The Touch Bar is really slick for this purpose. Also the keyboard is pretty great. Keys have better response and more travel than the super thin MacBook.

Wish they would have gone with nVidia GPU... Will miss the mag-safe power connector, but OTOH, the USB-C makes so much sense for everything.

iMac is not ready yet -- and mostly for the same reasons or issues I've expressed about the Surface Studio. We are only a month or two away from the proper range of Kaby Lake CPUs and a few other bits. I'm also betting that Apple may have had to re-evaluate the iMac line with what Microsoft has done with the Studio. Studio looks to be the ultimate arts & crafts computer.

No 32GB option at this time. Makes the new MBP a non-starter for me. 16GB is too much of a stranglehold and I run short too often. I can't spend $4K on a new laptop, which I could really use here, when I have been running out of RAM on my 4 year old MBP that had 16GB. Honestly, the MBP needs to be configurable to 64GB.

I just reached out to BOXX to see if we can do a group buy on this news. nobody buy anything yet.

Maybe they'll sell an external TB3 box that you can add your own RAM. :ciappa:

My thoughts exactly. At £2,700 for the top spec model in the UK that I can't customise up to 32GB it's a damn expensive toy and not much else.... Shame.

It's ether a windows or a hackintosh from now on. Can't say I am a big fan of ether.

+1 on the boxx, I have no idea what apple is thinking.

As a comparson i really like my i7 ms surface - 4 cores with 16 gig ram ... plus comes with all the ports so I don't have to to carry around a snake nest of connector . I mainly run ubuntu in a vm on the surface pro and the apps inside the VM are quick, plus doing things that way allows me to move things to servers easily for large jobs. Also surface is only 1.7 pounds, has a full touch interface and I log on through a finger print thing on the keyboard . Plus I think I bought it around a year ago, it beats my current MacBook pro in about every way so I see absolutely nothing in today's show - I btw hate touch pads where my thumbs are (I always disable that) and had a LCD function keyboard about 15 years ago which is almost the same thing ( and disliked that keyboard).

Sooooo when is the NEXT apple announcement? Ughhh

The letter I just sent to tcook@apple.com:

Tim,

When I was 14 years old, I bought my first Mac. It was March of 1984.

A whopping 128K of RAM, a 400K floppy and a 9-in monochrome screen.

From that day until now, I’ve only used Macs, exclusively. I have only been on Windows computers to help friends, but of course, I was as totally lost.

Today, my wife, my three children and I all use Macs. We all have iPhone 7’s. We all have iPads. We all have Apple Watches. We have the latest version of Apple TV.

My entire career revolves around my Mac.

Yet today, after the presentation, I will be shopping for my first PC.

Why?

Because I’m a professional who makes his money working on capable computers and Apple has officially abandoned that professional market… the market that made Apple successful: graphic designers, photographers, cinematographers, 3D artists, musicians.

The Mac Pro is over 3 years old and doesn’t support the modern nVidia GPUs. I can’t edit and colorgrade 8K video footage on a laptop with 16GB of RAM.

Anyway, as a colleague pointed out, I seriously couldn’t be more underwhelmed by a Touch Bar that can do emojis.

Maybe developing high-end workstations with raw horsepower for us professionals doesn’t bring enough ROI for Apple. But for a company that has over $100 billion is cash reserves, that sure seems like a silly reason.

We don’t need a work of art for a workstation. We need a workstation to work OUR art.

Please stop the suspense and tell the professional world what your intentions are. If abandonment is the plan, then tell us clearly so we can go buy PCs in peace.

But know this: there is still a need for trucks, as Steve called them, to carry the heavy loads. I’d prefer that my truck have an Apple logo on it.

With hope,

Andy

I agree with you Jeff. 32GB RAM should have been an option. I pulled the trigger anyway as I only need to handle 4K - 5K RED footage at the moment.
