  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New DJI Ronin M

Maybe I'm wrong but it seems that putting a regular Dragon with say a 24mm Canon prime, combined with canon mount and side ssd + a redmag weight is pushing this thing to its limits, the dragon body is 5lb alone

That is if you mount the v-mount plate on a handlebar and not using side handle/redvolts.

Using the side handle on gimbals is shit any way, as it offsets the lens center from the nodal point and pushes the camera over to the side which gives you un needed paralax shit when the gimbal uses it´s roll axis. So best is to keep the camera as small as possible and strive to get the lens nodal point into the point where pan tilt roll intersect, that makes a big difference in the steadiness of the footage. So I think the M gimbal with a weapon upside down and weighted so the lens get´s in dead center would work really great. And then using small/prime lenses.

i just had a chat with http://www.hawkwoods.com about this and they think its possible to make something

if i get the M i would like to use it with a super stripped down scarlet rig

scarlet body- without side handle
canon mount
eos L series glass - mostly
offhollywood hot link
iphone - with fool control for camera control and focus
ideally the red 5" touch ( not so sure about this with the problem with inverting the image)
Hdmi nyrius pro

I explained to jason at hawkwood i would like to power the entire unit from a single V mount off gimbal, they have mode a few bespoke solutions for drones in the past to power the red and gimbal

we talked about powering:

ronnin m
Red camera
nyrius Pro
hotlink

he seemed to think it would be possible to power the gimbal and power distribution box so the big problem would be the camera itself

ideally dji would release a updated power distribution box and relevant cables.

the ronin has been out for a while and this is a common problem i'm not sure why no one has addressed this especially dji

solution could be an updated power distribution system allowing for self regulating and then adding the correct d tap to dummy battery or connection

Intrigued by this too. I guess the question(s) is, is a slim lightweight v lock too much weight for the Ronin M and can you power the gymbal via the vlock's dtap or the +1 module's /quickback's 4pin /2pin lemo's?

I'm guessing not?

A RED battery belt clip solution won't work as the lemo chord will tug on the gymbal and mess the balancing.

You could possibly stop the strain with something like http://x.com/Power-Extension-RED-R-72.html

Strange I can't paste a wc link any way they have a red power extension cable

Fuck has red stopped camera wooden (reverse ) from being able to be linked to or written

Try this

Ha!

Is this old news about camera wooden reverse?

Wow shocking, very disappointed in red for such petty behaviour, sort it out red, you guys are better than this!

I remember some people telling that the belt clip was working on the ronin for them. That's not the case?

Ronin M on non-Carbon Epic

Ronin M on non-Carbon Epic

Hi Peter,

Thanks, you sound like a man of experience.

Can you tell me your thoughts regarding a non-carbon Epic on the Ronin M?

Would either of these setups work for example?:

Epic Dragon
1.8" SSD Module
+1 Module
Terradek Bolt
Hotlink
Canon Mount
L Series Lens
Whatever power solution to power Ronin M & Epic & power cables
x 3 Short lemo cables for Bolt and Hotlink

and then

Epic Dragon
1.8" SSD Module
+1 Module
Terradek Bolt
Hotlink
PL Mount
Superspeed Lens
Cinegears LCS
Whatever power solution to power Ronin M & Epic & power cables
x 3 Short lemo cables for Bolt and Hotlink

I know I'm clutching straws with that last one.

Is there a Ronin M dealer in the UK to test these setups?

Cheers,

I guess it depends if you have it clipped on your belt or on the Ronin itself ; )

Even if it were on your belt, it doesn't seem like it would "pull" any more than if it were mounted on the Ronin (just like the LCD cable, which also experiences motion independent of the gimbal). I was under the impression that there were at least a few people who were doing it this way, so I'm curious to know if that's the case.

I've tried it, and it works if you're moves are pretty straight forward. But it's also extremely limiting.

So I'm guessing the limitation stems less from the impact of the cord on the motors and more from the fact that in that operating scenario, the rig is tethered to your body and the cord may just get in the way if you start moving things around too much.

The few times I have the chance to shoot, it's in a remote location and I have to carry everything on my back, so a 4+ lb weight reduction on the Ronin M actually makes it a potential stabilization option for me. Otherwise, the obvious solution would be the original Ronin.

I want to get the opinion of those who went to NAB 2015 and got a chance to play with the new Ronin M and stripped down Red Epic Dragon. I have the 1st generation Ronin, but I am on the edge and ready to pull the trigger for the newer lighter gimbal. I was also interested in the Armour Man made by Tilta...but Phil and several others didn't like the design. I like to hear your thoughts regarding the new Ronin M

Tim,

As you know I have been one or the very first to play with the original Ronin, and have become a Beta tester for them, together with a very small group, and been very happy to have seen with great pleasure some of our suggested changes in to the final production model.

DJI has a great team of people, and listening to the end user has made the Ronin what it has become, but it still was their first shot at a Hand Held Gimbal, and at that they did an incredible job!

After now many shoots done with it in all kind of situations, I can say that I love hate the Ronin... (Finally been back in the US, my full LONG in detail review and set up tutorial will be finally (I KNOW) be up this month and you'll better understand my LOVE/HATE relationship with it)...

But when I seen and played with the Ronin-M at the RED booth (did;t do so at the DJI booth because it was literally impossible to get thru the huge crowds of people I found at their booth every time ai stopped by) and I found the new design very intriguing, while been almost a smaller copy of itself, when you look up close you see that there are many details, some s,mall some not so small that differentiate this little new TOY form its daddy...

I think that this little baby will most definitely answer all needs to my new intended RED camera set ups, as one of the HATE relations with the original Ronin it's the weight, and not just the weight of the Gimbal itself, but the fact that it can hold an impressive 16LB (we actually had a 21LB Red Dragone camera set up on it no problem) and this fact is what I come to hate, because you now are carrying all the weight, as you almost always putting the max capacity to the test with Camera/Lenses set ups, because you can, and because every DP I worked with wants more, always more, since it can handle it you can't say no.

But even with the coming of the Exo's to support the weight for you, you now are becoming a cyborg like on set, and giving up some of the intended freedom of the Hand Held Gimbals...

I love the effects and shots you get with a Steady Cam, but hate that thing, never wanted to learn because it's a ridiculous piece of gear to strap on to your body, and stranded using Hand Held Gimbals as soon as they came out, starting with crazy set ups, and then ending up with the Mini Gyros, stupid difficult to held up in place and keep in shot when working on Helicopters and other fast moving vehicles, and very limiting in its capacities.

Move forward to the Ronin era, and you now have so much flexibility its crazy that you can do what you can do, and love this ERA!!

Now move over to DJI's second shot at it and you end up with the Ronin-M, and smaller, lighter more responsive, more detailed, more portable, Hand Held Gimbal, that allows for 8LB pushing 10LB in such a small package that it also makes transport easier, as this, when traveling as much as I do, becomes an issues with bigger cases, (one of the reasons I also designed a smaller compact case for the original Ronin which I'll also feature on the review vid) and now with the Ronin-M that case becomes so much smaller and also of course so much lighter, which in turn becomes and other huge plus for me.

The fact that now DJI is hard at work for an onboard Battery solution that could likely have their fantastic Ronin batteries power the Gimbal and the camera, then it makes your camera set up even lighter...

Think of a Brain+Media Bay+SSD Mini+Wireless Module+Small Light Compact Lens and you are easy within the 8LB capacity, I'll be surely wanting to be testing it with the Leica Weapon/Summicron's combination too for a top end production camera set up.

I think that you should most absolutely give it a really hard look at it before you buy anything else... Then you can either decide to keep your original Ronin for heavier set ups or sale it and just do al your Gimbal shots with a smaller lighter set up and move to the Ronin-M exclusively...

For my needs and type of shoots and travels I always do, I think the latter will be true.

Oh, and additionally what I really love about how other fellow filmmakers have embraced DJI Ronin and went out of their way to design products to accompany it, and make it a better tool, this goes for Pedro with Cinemilled which make great adaptors to mount the Ronin and now the Ronin-M on just about anything and anywhere, Peter which built a great side ways battery solution, Austin built a super thin flexible Cable, and myself too, in my small I co-designed a small compact case for it... In the end, there is so much more out there for the Ronin that I am extremely happy that DJI made the M series, and I expect things to continue to get truly interesting with DJI... :)

Joe,

I'm right there with you and everything I use and operate with also is on my back. I was just in general commenting on how difficult it is to use extra connections on gimbals.

Gotcha, the insight is appreciated :)

Will my C100 Mk I work? I read it would, but not the Mk II due to its EVF extending too deep. Fingers crossed!!!

What I always see in all the Ronin and other brands pictures are shots I can not relate to: way too low angle shots and people putting up their arms in order to get a slightly higher angle....to me it has been just obvious from the start that Helix is the way to go. I own the Jr and use it with my Epic at eye level, elbows tight on my ribs for longer takes

Helix and H JR look to be a great piece of gear. Its personal preference, finding something that works for you. I do believe this was a Ronin-M discussion however. Just sayin' They ship yet?
