  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New DJI Ronin M

I'm getting pretty jarring results. Haven't had much luck with this thing yet. Initially it was fine, but the more i've tried to dial it in it seems to get worst.

this is a recent test:

Any tips for motor settings? I'm right at 8 lbs.

Hi guys. Having a strange problem. New ronin m. Cam is perfectly balanced- footage looks great, but the tilt is -12 degrees (tilting down). The trim function can bring it to -8. Tried calibration and center with the remote and still not centered.

The strange thing is that if I power up the remote and manually center the tilt to 0degrees and turn off the remote, the ronin holds the proper tilt in til I power cycle.

Is this a firmware bug in 1.3??

Might use this guy a bit in the desert. Any tips for avoiding sand in the motors, etc.

Is this safe?

My Ronin M Experience

My Ronin M Experience

I came here looking for answers, I found some and I hope I can provide some answers for others.

I have been trying all kind of settings on the RoninM. Some work some don't. I am using it with a Canon 6D and 24-70mm MkII lens.

I initially had some PAN drifting. I would center it and still end up with 4-6 degrees drift to left. Not a lot but noticeable.
I've updated the software firmware, and drifting is better ( 2 degrees or so on PAN, still significant on TILT ).

Remote control left switch, that's supposed to change the speed between 30,60,90 ( default settings ) doesn't do anything for me.
Remote control right switch ( Smooth track on , off, center camera ) only centers PAN and ROLL. It never brings TILT back.
Smooth track on / off I can't tell the difference, nothing seems to happen.

If you have TILT problems check the motor stiffness.
An automatic setting of up to 12 is too low. My tilt bounces when I stop it ( @ end the movement ).
I managed to up it to 25 but there's slight vibration in the arm, from the tilt motor, but the bouncing diminishes. With higher stiffness on the tilt it starts vibrating like crazy.
Note: stiffness on the PAN motor is 64 ( my case), a bit less on the ROLL motor, and they work fine.
I've reduced the stiffness on the PAN motor to 12 to test my bouncing theory and yes, it bounces.
Some guy posted a screen capture of his settings, he only had 6 stiff on tilt, way too low ( self calibrated ).
I suspect the drifting on TILT is also caused by low stiffness.
By the end of a 3-4 min tour around the house, the camera will end up pointing up or down by approx. 10 degrees.

The remote control sometimes links very fast ( few seconds ) sometimes it takes more like 30 secs, after turning it on, off, and a bit of messing with the controls to get it kicking in.
If you want to mount a taller camera ( e.g. with a battery pack ) you need extension bars, to lower the camera even more in the cradle. My 6D with BP won't balance as is.

I still like the RONIN-M a lot for the price, but I won't keep it. The weak tilt problem is not something that I want to deal with.
Good design overall. Balancing is easy. The manual is full of bad English and circular definitions. Support and customer service is lack lustre.
Still I like it and it could be a fantastic gimbal.

Hi guys,

I don't found the thread about powering the Ronin and Ronin M, but as I have the 2 Ronin, I post here and give you a feedback asap about this !

I just recieved today, with this new part from DJI, we can power the Epic with the battery of the Ronin ! So for powering the M, it could be the perfect solution even if the Red will discharge quickly the Ronin battery.

There is one D-TAP on each side.

As i tested, I will come back with feedback !

Hi Alex,

I would like to know how it goes with the distributor, Ronin-M and powering the Epic?

Mine is coming in the mail, but I have seen photos, and looks like the battery attachment piggy backs on the normal batt attachment (making battery sick out a bit more then usual on the back) and provides and d-tap output to power red. You need this cord to get pow pow to the red off the piggy back attachment: http://store.dji.com/product/ronin-m-red-power-cable

Also I learned there is new charger for the 4350mah batteries if you decide to go that route: http://store.dji.com/product/ronin-57w-battery-charger
Supposedly with old charger only gets these batts to %90 full.

I would also like to know if the smaller batteries work to power both ronin-M and Red. My feeling is that they should, but could be wrong.

The new power distributer module for Ronin-M has saved me. Now my stripped down Dragon runs great without added weight of an additional battery.
The Dragon sucks power from he Ronin now.

How long does the Ronin M battery last powering the RED? Wouldn't it drain it real quick? Planning to fly the Raven on my Ronin M, wondering if I could use the Ronin battery or should stick a slim V-lock on there

Michael - you will be able to power your DSMC/DSMC2 brains from the Ronin's battery for aerials with no problem. Your UAV will have to land long before you need to swap the DJI battery. Keep an eye for new NAB announcements from DJI...
Hint hint....gimbal or power solutions?
