  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

I really don't understand how anyone could complain about not having sufficient funds to purchase an upgrade after they opted to be in the upgrade program? The camera is clearly for professionals, so for anyone who has to save to get this upgrade I think is working backwards. Don't spend $9,500 if you don't have a steady cash flow that gives you the ability to spend that kind of money without breaking the bank. If upgrading means you will be at or near 0 funds in your bank account, I highly suggest you rethink it and stick with the Scarlet till you can actually comfortably afford the Epic.

I'm sure I could go that route, but Epic Dragon is my path. I am patient. It's the camera I've been waiting for.

With all the contributions Phil has given to the RED community, I say he should be entitled a "double-dipping" round

If I did that I would still be shooting on an XL1 and contemplating the point of ever upgrading at all. I've been "going for broke" since day one and it's only pushed and brought me higher and higher. The fact that I'm in the RED game and getting an Epic should be a testament to that. Not everyone follows the same path, nor should they. I'm not broke by any means, but most people would still say I'm insane for buying the toys I do.

Emil, thanks for your prolific first post, but Please dont join the forum and immediately start make sweeping generalisations of who is and isnt professional.

Just because I cant drop $10,000 at the drop of a hat doesnt mean Im not a respected member of my field.

This was all to do with timing, if the email had come last week I would have been golden.

Correct, "executed" means that the corresponding serial number is earmarked for that particular path. If you cancel order now due to lack of funds (or your SCARLET is on a shoot for a month, for example), you can re-place that same order with your rep later on as long as that particular program is still being performed by RED.

If you cancel and never re-order, it remains executed and cannot be used for other upgrade/trade-in paths.

Make sense?

Thanks for clearing it all up Brent. I wasnt trying to be difficult or ungrateful for the opportunity to upgrade, I just didnt want to lose it.

It all makes sense now. I will try and get this sorted in the next week, and if not, back to the end of the line for me. Which is fine.

cheers

Andrew - so from originally wanting a BMC, to getting a Scarlet... and you're now joining the Epic club?

Drinking the RED kool aid as they say ;)

Eh? No, If you knew me, which you dont, you would know i am not a Kool Aid Drinker. I have loyalty to me first!
Truth be told, the Scarlet turned out to be a better buy than i expected, and as i film a lot of martial arts ( i coach Kickboxing and MMA), Higher Frame Rates will be ideal.
Aside from this we are relocating, and i am moving out of medicine back into media production work, so this is excellent timing. Its been a win, win for me with the Scarlet.
Havent looked back, and having played with a BMC, all i can say, is thank god i didnt purchase it.

Andrew.

Cheers Dennys. Epic with Mysterium-X has been a workhorse for me too. I've had an interesting and productive year of shooting with Scarlet and Epic. Although some of my favorite material was shot on Scarlet, that should be released by October. Gonna miss "Skully" when it's his/her time to get executed, but couldn't be more excited for what that means.

I've pulled some miracles off since NAB and gathered funds for Epic Dragon. I'm not a greedy man. All I ask is for Dragon to be amazing.

No pressure :)

I never said anything about contemplating and never taking the next step in your career. What I said was to save your money till you can afford it. For someone like yourself who is "going for broke" all that you need is just one major mishap and your life could be in shambles. I'm not saying that you shouldn't keep advancing in our industry, but be smart about it. Going from a Scarlet to an Epic is more of a luxury for a lot of people, so don't stress over it till you can somewhat afford it.

take the risk. fortune favors the bold.

No worries, man. That is why this forum is great, we can see immediately if there is a misunderstanding.

That's a lot of cash to just have "on hand". If you have $10,000 just sitting around ready for a 2-3 day notice then you aren't managing your money terribly well. Lots of people have "cash" which is actually investments. Other people might have very irregular payments from clients. Maybe you have $50k in invoices currently pending but a client isn't paying up. Ideally you wouldn't have $10k just sitting in a checking account ready to go for some unknown delivery date for a pre-order. It could have shipped the week of NAB or in August. Until yesterday we had no clear idea of about when it would ship. If you guessed August then maybe you just made some large purchases assuming you wouldn't need that cash on hand until the end of July. I usually have too much money sitting idle but even I almost got caught off guard this week since I just purchased a ton of gear for a shoot last week. It's not irresponsible money management to try and keep all of your money working instead of indefinitely sitting on $10k that could be making money through other investments in your business.

Andrew I am not saying you or anyone else is professional or not. The term professional clearly means that you get paid for your services. All I am saying is that if your going to spend your last dollar to cover the cost of upgrading you should reconsider it and wait till you have a steady cash flow that allows you to afford the cost of the camera and not put you at 0 or in the red (no pun intended lol)

I've been in this business long enough to know that you should take reasonable steps when buying equipment. The Epic for most is not a necessity, especially if you already own a Scarlet. I have no qualms in disagreeing with me, but I think its not smart from a business stand point to buy a camera that will put you near or at 0.

OK I need to stop because I am coming from someone who works in NYC. Honestly 10k is a give and take around here. I have way more then that "sitting around" because I don't spend every cent I make and I also save try to spend wisely. In NYC you can have thousands in monthly expenses. The Epic is nearly a 30-50k camera! It is not meant for someone who has to nickel and dime to afford it. I would never suggest purchasing an item so expensive if your not making six figures a year. At least thats my opinion.

what about 5 figures for a scarlet? lol
