  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

Hello RUs,

This could be answered else where already in this thread but i searched and could not find one, so posting it now.

Has anyone sent their Scarlets to be upgraded to Epic-X ?

Is it happening right away or does it take time like Dragon upgrade ?

I see Epic-X can be bought off the shelf but upgrade from Scarlet to Epic-X does not happen that fast, i was told weeks by my Bomb squad :(

Any light on the time line for the scarlet to epic upgrades ?

Early adopters and Epic-M owners are first in line for the Dragon upgrade.

After that, likely Epic-X and then Scarlet-X peeps.

I'll be driving my camera down to get upgraded and will be sitting in my car until I get the call :)

just spoke with red and there is no info yet on when the trade in program will start....
i put my upgrade order (scarlet to epic X) in right away and have to say that i assumed that that part of the upgrade program would start pretty much right away....this was of course not based on any information from red....just based on, maybe common sense? there is existing stock of epics, and something will have to happen with the traded in scarlets, so the sooner they get them in, the faster they can do whatever they have planned to do with them after....
regardless, i guess i would have preferred an idea of a timeframe....somehow this does not seem to happen with red....every time i want, need to buy something or deal with red, setting a reasonable timeframe is had to achieve....i will have to get used to that....
 
i think they are gonna wait til the epic->dragon guys get there fix. tho this is mere speculation on my part... i jumped for Scarlet Dragon, can't wait...

we know that the epic to dragon upgrades are first in line (M first then X) and that scarlet to scarlet D comes after that (starting sometime in july?) and these timeframes are understandably loose because the sensor is new and firmware/color/....is not even finalized....
but there are epics sitting on shelves right now...noting new, nothing to be updated, just the trade in process to consider....so what is the problem with assigning numbers to people who chose that route and ordered....and make a schedule to get this taken care of....
unless absolutely every technician is somehow involved in the dragon launch and there is nobody to receive the scarlets coming in and to check them thoroughly?

As the week draws to an end, any chance we can know when we can trade our scarlets for a epic? Would love to do it ASAP please.
 
Im not sure its as simple as pulling MX cameras of the shelf to replace your scarlet.....

I would imagine the logistics alone in purely receiving and sending cameras is something they would like to save for after the initial push of Dragon upgrades at the very least.

Even if it is a straight up camera swap then there would be a lot of Scarlets to suddenly shift BT, which in turn would take up manpower. This of course assuming that there isnt going to be parts from your scarlet going in to your MX. You never know. (unless Ive missed a post amongst all the gumpf)

I for one am hoping we are talking mid to late july at least. Summer is quiet time for me and I have a fair bit of cash to find to pay for all this.... :)

Am I correct in the assumption that we are getting a BT MX sensor in a new body as part of the trade in Jarred?

Any feedback on the issue is highly appreciated.

Tom your quote is out of context. This is only valid if you have existing Red Armor!
Belowis is the full statement. That still leaves the question open. Is the Scarlet trade for a completely new Epic X or just a new body with BT sensor and parts from Epics that are being upgraded to Dragon. As that will affect the turnaround time for a trade it essentially.

You would have to buy a epic or epic dragon. There's no upgrade path after scarlet dragon.

Hehehe, this upgrade is done by selling your Scarlet and buying a EPIC.
Speculation on: but who knows what RED is planning next, if there will be another sensor-update in a few years, there could be a official way to upgrade from Scarlet-Dragon to EPIC-Dragon, just like the option for Scarlet-X to EPIC-X that we have now (which i NEVER EVER expected to happen).

BTW, for me its more and more: getting a new 5k-camera with more fps for just 9500USD or saving "only" 5000USD on a new EPIC-X with Dragon. I tend more and more towards thinking, that if i get the money together to get an EPIC, i'll probably be in a situation where i can happily pay the full price and then have two Dragon-cameras. Scarlet Dragon will make a even better B camera to a EPIC Dragon than it was before.

so whats the price of scarlet dragon ? must be same price with epic-x

Thats a big question. I have another one, will RED offer new Scarlet-Dragon brains at all? It looks like they're not so sure about that right now. ;)
 
The problem is, if Scarlet-Dragon is $17.5 it's 75% the cost of Epic-Dragon at $24k, but has 1/3 the performance (no 6k and no astonishingly highframe rate)... With margins that close, it's not worth buying it over the Epic-Dragon. Even at $15k, I'd argue it's too expensive to be considered an entry-point into the RED ecosystem - chances are if you can drop $15k for just the brain, you could probably find $24k for an Epic-D - so, again, I'm not sure that's a sweet enough spot. Conversely, if it's $12.5k, people who upgraded just the sensor for $9.5k would probably be a little pissed, given that $3k more would have gotten them two brains.

It's a weird spot to be in given that the Scarlet-X was ~$9.5k while Epic-X was $34k less than a year ago (essentially ~1/3rd the cost for ~1/3 the performance).

I would not say 1/3. All the movies we saw that were shot with the epic, would look even better if shot with the scarlet dragon.
5k is not outdated suddenly by 6K.

The girl with the dragon tattoo looks fantastic and it's 3,5k. Most of the movies shot with the epic or the red one were windowed too. 6k will be really useful for just a few people.
The dragon revolution is imho the iso, the DR, the new color science. The scarlet dragon has it all.
I just agree for the framerates. As the epic dragon is 6k and the scarlet dragon is a 5k camera, it would be nice to have some nice framerates as the limitation is already there with 5k. And the specs of the scarlet dragon are not clear on this. It seems the announced framerates only concern the 2.4:1 format.

As a resolution, 5k is more than fine (downscales to 4k really well). However, when I say 6k I'm basically chomping at the bit for the FOV/sensor size more than the actual increase in resolution... To me that's more worth the upgrade $$ than the additional 1k, as it gives the footage a unique look (beyond s35 film) that you could sell clients on (e.g. better/different than other cheaper 4k cameras that are "only" s35) and you can always crop back down to s35 when the project requires it.

Honestly, I was (and am, if it's even a possibility) hoping for 6k-25, 5k-50, 4k-75, 3k-100, 2k-200... That said, I rarely care for high-frame rate, but to be fair, I wouldn't buy/rent a Scarlet (current or dragon) for shots that required it anyway.
