  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

2 Simple Options.

#1. Upgrade your Scarlet to Full Epic-X (including new black body) - $9500. After that.. you can upgrade your Epic-X to Full Epic Dragon through the normal Epic-X to Dragon process.

#2. Upgrade your Scarlet to Scarlet Dragon - $9500 ( keep your grey body ) Get all the dynamic range and new color science of the Dragon with a max framerate of 5K 60fps. Full specs to come soon.

Any chance a hint on 6k 25fps? Full specs can wait a lot longer than that titbit

Pleasantly surprised after it was all but confirmed to not be in the cards for the Scarlet.

If it has 120 @ 4K ...that'd be awesome!

In theory, I suppose there's technically a 3rd option to go ahead and do it all for $19,000? Just do both upgrades at once if going with #1.

So Scarlet-X can go to Epic-X Dragon for $19,000.

So you're ultimately getting a $5,000 discount to go all the way.
selling scarlet and buying dragon is cheaper

Wait so this means to actually get a REAL Dragon, you have to pay first the 9500 to get the Epic, then ANOTHER 9500 for the Dragon?

Yeah, if it can do at least 96 @ 4k, then I think I'm sold on option 2. 120 @ 4k would be awesome.

24 @ 6k would be cool, but not really necessary for me. Just icing on the cake. Don't think I can edit 6k on my machine right now anyway.

+1 - IMO the Epic MX upgrade price is at a point where it's not a smart financial move when you compare it to other options. Nonetheless, it's nice to have options!

I'll always wonder why there was an abrupt 180 on Scarlet upgrade possibility.

Pure speculation, but perhaps someone at Red had a miraculous discovery at the 11th hour about Dragon color science using ASIC boards that simply 'weren't fast enough' a month ago.

That's what I'm reading. Dragon is $29,000 new right, so that is like getting full value for your trade in Scarlet, yes? Is Red really doing that again?

Dragon M is $29,000. Dragon-X is $24,000. Just a $5,000 savings.

Ahh that is what I was missing. Thanks

$5k isn't too bad and it helps keep the used market from falling into the shitter. It may just be better to go for a private sale and buy Dragon new. Much will depend upon whether or not the store sees a new Scarlet Dragon and what that price point is.

Hey Jarred--

Thank you.

My kind of high speed is 28fps on a reaction shot, 32 fps for MOS handheld, 60 fps for a deliberate moment... or 600-1500 fps with a Phantom... rent an Epic when you need it, shoot Scarlet for most everything else...

Thank you for keeping the in-between option. New color rendition, 2000 ASA, three more stops of range, that's what we needed and somehow you made it happen.

When will we see footage? Pre-ordering anyways...

When will the option to upgrade expire? :smile5:

Something like at the end of year or in a couple weeks/months?
Thanks Jarred

Sell Scarlet brain for anything over $5K (good luck!) and it would be cheaper.

Used Scarlets are that cheap now? What the crap, mainstream technology isn't even at 4k yet and the Scarlet's cost is degrading that much?

for EPIC it is open ended (no date set for now) so I presume I could be the same for the baby dragon...

The advantage of going the Epic X upgrade route, is that you get an upgrade (any sort of upgrade) much faster. Am I right?
