  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Proxy Module

As much as I wanted a proxy module, this isn't what i had in mind. The pins are on the back of the brain for a reason, right? they pass SDI through to the pro IO, right? Why do we have to plug into the SDI to use this? I'm also dissapointed that I have to an adapter can't just stick it on the back of the camera. When I heard the plus 1 adapter used the HDMi, I thought it disabled the HDMI using the internal pins, not required a cable to plug into it.

Is this a limitation of the brain? I though the brain was meant to be modular. I think it might be time to make a new brain that can actually support things like this. Or even one that has proxy files built in to the normal record media.

A samurai is what I use today, and will probably continue to use.

What are all those pins for, if not to actually connect modules?

As it has already been mentioned, to keep the costs and size down RED chose to use the feed that is already downsampled and debayered. Otherwise you would be looking at a much larger module. The proxy module, and the +1, were never part of the module roadmap.

Exactly! If the Proxy Module would connect directly to the rear pins it would need asics, cooling and stuff. It would be a whole different beast...

As an HDSDI recorder and compared to a pix, I mostly miss TC.
The pix monitor wasn't usable for focus control anyway - and onboard audio also works fine without.

The form factor of the Proxy Module is so much better, even with the inevitable Module Adapter or +1 Adapter!

IMO: the crucial question regarding the Red Proxy Module is the reliability of long recording times.
I went through hell with the Pix (got too many glitches after 15mins of recording). Returned three of them. Lost shooting days. And jobs.

Don't mind HDSDI recording but
1) it needs to be bullet proof (especially for jobs where you can't record raw on Side SSD)
2) we need different gamma / color setting for HDSDI and Red monitor path

A bummer is the price of the Proxy Module package (2.800,-$ or 3.700,-$ + costly media)

Would need to know more about power consumption, too!

So, yes, I'm also hesitating.
Will keep an eye on the Odyssey, but won't buy anything that doesn't easily connect back to R3D's.
(As this is where I want production companies to go!)

I have to find a solution that doesn't drive me away from the Dragon update I lust for...

Cheers!

P.s.: If I'd go for the Red Proxy solution with the +1 Module, I'd definitely try to stuff a Denecke TC board in the latter... Must be possible somehow!

I was just referring to clients that don't pay for transcoding:

"Can you deliver DNxHD 185 or Prores HQ at the end of the day?
No? Well thank you!"

Also, this was in plan for a while now.

But, I think for some applications this is a great solution. for times when you can have an external recorder, that technology is pretty mature at this point with lots of vendors offering many choices.

A $700 ninja, or a $1200 Samurai is a great way to deliver proxy footage at the end of the day.

Obviously I don't speak for everyone. But clients that just want you to show up and shoot something and be able to walk away with proRes files the same day, are not concerned with 4K, or RAW, or even the camera you use. I'm also a photographer, and I never hand over the files at end of day. I also have an external recorder that I use often, but it's more for on set revues of clips. You just need to get creative of putting the cost of the transcoding elsewhere.

Yes when RED started down this path, there was nothing else available. Priorities did change:

BTW, Samurai will be under $1000 now because it will be replaced by the Blade which has a nicer screen and production quality exposure tools.

@ Bob,
I understand.
But in my field of work I sometimes have to cater both: TV productions and such that aim for festival/big screen, if the project (doc) gets more support...
Not easy and not paying strongly!

And funny thing, in my experience, the productions that don't care about what the format the footage is in, as long as they can go straight to edit easily (I know, you can edit R3D's in FCPX and CS, but you know my drift), are the ones that pay the best. Cannot ignore those from a business standpoint.

Actual that's a good point. The ones that pay well are often the ones that trust you to deliver the goods. I don't mind that clients want something familiar to them, I just want to deliver something that is the best it can be. Making the production as painless as possible is going to win you points. 80 percent of my work is from repeat customers.

I have been mentioning and waiting for this for a couple years now! I really wanted a super solid OEM unit that would allow Epic to natively record ProRes and handle all the details like varispeed... not just another HDsdi recorder. My PIX240i dose all of this and more, it just doesn't snap on the back. Unless I am missing something?

What ever happened to the Proxy Module?
Was supposed to ship on June, and there are no news on it.

By the way, very interested if it will record off-speed shots as well.

+1, also interested in hearing more news.

No off speed recording except from internal playback.

Dear Red Team,

Please spill some tiny crumbs on this one!
I don't mind the non off speed functionality.

When are they rolling out?
Are there any problems?
Could it be a little bit cheaper than the pix?
Or, if not, get similar specs (Audio inputs & TC clock)?

Back to saving money for the Dragon.... and the Prores Module!
