  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Proxy Module

Well considering how they pulled the meizler module to revamp it maybe they are doing the same to the proxy?

Any news on this?
I'm more interested in this than to the sensor upgrade.

Haven't heard squat. My fix, sold the piece of plastic dodgy Atomos and bought a BM shuttle which bolts straight to the back if my epic behind the vlock. Works exactly like this module will apparently do...and is just flawless and easy. I have it on record with rolling timecode so all I have to do is pull up the clip in playback and just hit play. It's damn damn easy and about 1/10th the price of the proxy module...if it ever gets released and does EXACTLY the same thing!

Yep. It's dead as far as we know it.

Shame, had it be redesigned to carry info via the brain's connectors and maybe offer multiple SDI outputs similar to an Alexa/F55 it'd have been a great addition. ProRes is still something my clients either ask for from me, or provide to me, for post.

The Proxy module would only record the SDI out... so only good for standard speed recordings does not do highspeed, timlapes etc. What good would such module be? To me thats a half ass solution that would piss more people off then do good I think. But thats only my opinion, and red's I guess.

Björn is dead right, the proxy module as announced was a pretty useless addition. It only served to show that Red did not and still do not get why people want HD prorez and/or DNxHD.

At the risk of repeating myself (and countless others) there was and is and are many good reasons to have a module that allows high quality downscaled HD 'masters' (or proxies if thats what people want) while at the same time providing a few other basics like a few more HDSDI outs and full size XLR ins. It would need to be off speed capable and also capable of RLF (or whatever LUT you want, hell why not clones with different LUT's if thats what you want).

Or maybe Red do get it and cant do it (like flop)

Or maybe some DIT's explained to Red why its a bad idea for their OT or... I dunno I am grasping at straws, especially the last one. Its just so beedin obvious that RED owners would get more rentals if they could hand over prorez or DNxHD instead of massive rez files.

Plus you would be far more likely to have an EPIC as a 2nd or 3rd Cam on an Alexa job if this were an option.

Rant over.

Phew

You are correct - I`m sure RED must understand this. It actually seems beyond obvious.

I hope, as someone offered earlier in the thread, this module has not hit a technical brick wall in RED R&D.

Hopefully this is why they pulled it in the first place, because it was a weak and incomplete implementation to a very important user request, only really exciting in the sense of form factor, which may have been one of the limiting factors in the first place. Other than that, there was nothing distinguishing it from a PIX240/samurai/shuttle, other than the fact that it would only work with dsmc and was missing a lot of other useful functions...

It would be really fantastic if they would revisit this concept, one that records a quicktime or dnx proxy at whatever framerate the camera is shooting *while* it is shooting, with matched timecode and filename. Even if said module is a bit bigger (maybe the size of the dual battery module), it would result in a camera that is still very compact, perhaps better balanced, and shoot-to-edit ready for essentially all currently used post workflows.

I would propose one additional change...to the name: the crown jewel module ;)

And by proxy, i dont mean something limited to small size/low-quality files...prores 1080p 4444 with RLF would be great, and still be a proxy (at least in my mind) to the more bountiful R3D.

There's something to be said for the fact that the sound devices PIX240/i is a 444 recorder, includes a screen, and you can get them as used packages for 2500. So if RED re-addresses this product, they really need to offer it in a setup that makes sense given how requested this feature is for productions of all size.

I didn't know where to put this, but I wanted to make sure someone from RED with knowledge saw it. Wondering about the content creators party at Pure (Caesar's Palace) for the evening of Sunday, April 6th announced on the official NAB site. RED is shown as the "sponsor."

Is this the closest thing there will be to a REDUser party this year? This is my first NAB, after years of wanting to and threatening to go, and, as an Epic owner, I would love to say hello in person to Jarred (whom I followed here from DVXUser before RED was even RED), as well as meet some of the RED users whose names I've gotten to know over the years, and, of course, shake hands with Jim Jannard himself. Is this the place to be to meet RED folk this year?

This is what RED did last year for their party. IMHO, it wasn't the best place to mingle. Mingling with fellow redusers is actually easier at the booth. At least their are name tags during the show to help introduce yourself.
