  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mike Seymour

Id really like to know more about that Gyro rig hanging off the bottom?
Can I have more info on that Mike.

Cheers mate

Just to add to that post - Jim - if you were to give one man an EPIC right now - who would deliver kick arse footage - It would be Mark Toia at ZoomTV in QLD.

Blush!!! thanks Mike..

Give yourself some credit mate. The service you provide is invaluable for new comers and pro's alike. RED should have you on the payrole.
I just get more opportunity to push the limits of everything.. :) and like you I love sharing.

Have a great day mate.

Sorry for slightly off-topic post guys, but having been in a heli crash, freaks me out a little to see people flying so low with doors open with unsecured rigs and no crash helmets on. They will help protect you in moments of madness, which do happen.... Sure, we all love those low level rides, but stay safe out there.....

Hey Jim, listen to the man he is so damn right about this.

Give Mark his baby and you won't have to worry about the next Epic showreel :w00t:

Cheers Mate

This is a valid point.

just so you know the EPIC was on safety at three places... top bottom and another under the seat. The lines were attached to the Helicopter frame - and the parts of the rig were attached to each other with safety lines.
We rigged this in Sydney and ran it car to car to test the camera, gyro etc to make sure we knew how it would perform before we left.

Also I had a seat belt around my torso - and I had a harness on - which john was manning - but it was also attached to the helicopter frame and the harness was rated for 1000Kg

Finally we did not fly with just anyone - Alfie is a very very professional... non-cowboy - quietly spoken professional filming stunt pilot. He was not doing what we asked - he was doing what he felt he could - which to be honest exceeded anything we could have asked for.

It is true we did not have helmets on - and that would have been a good idea. But time and time again during the flight we'd discuss what was safe and never once did we ask him to "push it".

But you are right there is risk and had there been wind this day - we would not have done these shots, but it was a virtually windless day.

Anyway good point

Mike

All good mike. I wasn't doubting that you had the camera and yourselves secured with cables and straps. Just think that helmets are essential for the operator when filming in a helo. When they go wrong, even when you have stuff tied down, they tend to thrash around and stuff does fly about. Case of being there once, never wanna experience it again.... I was very lucky. Smacked around on the outside of the helo as it bounced down the side of the hill, luckily landed upright. No helmet, but always wear one now.

Friend of mine got really badly hurt while shooting for a BBC show with Ray Mears in the states. Flying low, skids caught the ground, tumbled over and over. He didn't work for about 2 years and is still having surgery.

I, and I suspect a lot of others like yourself love the buzz of radical helo flying, but do be careful out there.

Sorry for going off topic..:001_smile:

Very good point!!

Btw, for example I do have five helmets at home for my mountain biking, city biking, skiing and skateboard driving activities...

A helmet is must have for any helicopter drive even if you are just a tourist...with or without a camera...

Mark,

I understand that the Tyler Gyro system is not for sale. Greg Read has the Australian rental market.

Grrrr.... why is all the cool shit on this planet take so long to buy or you can't buy it at all.

We used two of these gyro's on a wedge plate hanging off a bundgy cord about 10 years ago, Work super sweet! I think I'll make my own.
Did it once before, I'll do it agin. :)

This model Gyro was way to powerful but the company makes smaller versions, which I suspect tyler have done. two opposed so you don't fight them and the camera.

Have a nice day y all...

Mark this gyro setup is crazy interesting and performs NOTHING like those std bolt on gyros. You need to have a play, love to hear your thoughts.

ALSO in decades of shooting out the side door ive never been offered, asked or even seen a spare helmet available for shooting crew. I think if this is your job a good helmet with coms would be a great investment tho would often get in the way of finders and camera bodies in 'the old days'

Now?.. not so much :-)

Actually, on their site they say they use 2 KS-8 gyros, which is the reference you posted.

Agreed.
I'll be trying it for sure. The ones we made years ago were super stable though. We just sold it and shouldn't have.

Regarding helmets. A flight helmet with headphones is about $1600. I own and use it from time to time pending on how dangerous the shot maybe.
