  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Proxy Module

What's the max quality proxy type supported? I want to shoot myself when producers want to use proxies cuz "its just for the web", but I'm going to get asked so I need to know... Sorry to ask such a weak ass question and congrats on the module - June is soon, thanks.

Cheers - #19

good one, closing the gap...

Is this in addition to recording on the RED Mags? So you get the RAW and the codec of your choice?

Gotta say the 'Connects via included HD-SDI cable to your DSMC brain or PRO I/O MODULE and the PROXY MODULE will record your 1080p video feed onto RED MINI-MAGs (64GB, 128GB, or 256GB).' Worries me...

Sounds like it will only be recording the feed from the camera. Not recording or generating actual proxies?

Clarification?

possible to record slo mo? and does it also work with the +1 module? thanks

It works thru HD-SDI (loop) so I do not see why it would work with +1 (using HDMI signal) but not way it can do any slow-mo while recording...

BUT maybe you can do slow-mos afterwards using camera playback... AND with appropriate camera FW update to "play all clips", it could act as a kind of on-set rocket to transcode everything at the end of the day maybe, provided you kept all media on original SSD drives

That would seem to be the implication.

Yes, I agree. What metadata is being recorded with the proxies? I believe MXF wrapped DNxHD could carry a complete set of .R3D metadata.

I think that Toia expected another kind of solution, as I can remember. Even it looked like a dream maybe this proxy module is a bit deceiving?

I think most of us were expecting a Meizler module in parts with this "proxy module" and the "+1 module adapter", for all of us who can't afford the meizler. I think the think that's most annoying from these two modules is that they don't use the connectors behind the camera. So our dreams of a camera without all those wires goes only one way: the Meizler. Even that can be overkill for most of us.

Well, as usual I think we'll just have to wait for the first users to review it.

As I understand it only handles regular framerates... I think the time when we needed this module is was months back, now it does not feel as important any more. Also wish it used normal redmags instead of the mini version. Buying little ssd's only for this purpose does not feel right.

Hmmz the cable thing worries me also... Because if it doesn't do slowmo, and it is connected by a cable it will have no advantage over external recorders that you can use on different camera's except for size. The whole point of the module is that it records all the same framrates as the epic can do with frame accurate timecode... So lets hope this thing can do that!
