  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2015 - Lies, damn lies and rampant speculation

4000k/1fps?

But seriously, yeah, I think that's a wifi/switchblade style module... And if it's not, RED should really get on that. Though if it's more than the $450 hotlink, I'm not sure how useful it'll be.... unless it has wireless video (though I don't think that's possible via the side port).

When is NAB, exactly?

Hey Terry sorry for the late reply i have been shooting:) LOVE MY DRAGON!!!!

any way back to it:

1.i discharged the batteries as much as i could by leaving them in the camera over night.
2.placed them into a sealed bag and whacked them into the freezer over night 11hours
3.took them out in the morning and wiped them down of any moisture and left them in room temp until the evening,
I decided to repeat so another 11hours in fridge and 11 hours at room temp (not sure if that actual did anything more)

charged them up and the result was 100% charge and lasting 30 to 32 mins, before this i was getting 68% to 78% charges.

I'm not sure if its an internet myth but it worked for me:)

EDIT

just double checked all the batts and 2 out of 6 are hitting 100% and the rest 98%

Thanks so much. I am going to try this..

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program....

IN THE DARKNESS I SEE A NEWLY DESIGNED SIDEHANDLE WITH BUILT IN CAPABILITIES.

to see further will have to call my astrologist.

There is only one thing I would really love to have. A Redvolt battery that lasts at least twice as long as the current one and charges to full capacity, not less than 80%. There are so many of us who rely on the side handle for power and the Redvolt battery in its present form is just not a viable solution. Other than that, I really love my Dragon.
This is exactly why I didn't buy a single redvolt.. what are you supposed to be able to do with a 20 minute shoot time?

For one Redvolts are super useful to not have to power down the cam when swapping v-mount or Anton batteries. I always have them in.

This. Although on the last shoot the dolly grip wanted to pull the AC and I said "It's fine, it's got a failover battery inside." So he pulled the plug. And the camera died. I had forgotten to put in a REDVolt.

It's not a perfect system haha. Would be nice to have a little UI indicator when it does have failover power.

Get the shot of a lifetime?

I still think back to the day a few years ago (Scarlet-X shoot) where we needed to rig the camera really light weight on set for a odd last minute change to a VFX shot that required a sudden vertical slider move. I had 4 Redvolts charged in my kit that day. That janky improvised rig and that shoot won me a pretty decent cinematography award in 2013. That shoot paid for my Redvolts as far as I'm concerned.

Low cost dslr sized camera that records to CF cards.

This is the first thing I would ask for. But it would have to be like the Sony NEX-7, not the A7, which for some silly reason has the damned EVF away from the edge of the body. These are electronic cameras, I cannot see why the placement of the EVF has to mimic film SLRs. The good thing about a RED still camera: no physical shutter, exactly like the A7s and OM-D EM-5II (optional on both) and so on.

But: which mount? I'd start with the M mount, as you can build up on that. You can put PL lenses on an M camera but not M lenses on a PL camera.

Jarred and I think Jim both spoke of light field imaging shortly before Jim went low profile. It may be too early for that talk to bear fruit but it is out there.

I was almost a convert to the Lytro Illum but the images are all soft. There's no point in guaranteeing focus if the image is going to be soft anyway. It could be an innate flaw in the system. But I hope not. A light-field camera would be awesome for capturing live-action subjects that aren't going to wait around for you to lock focus.

P.S. I still think of the 3K Scarlet. $3,000 for something that capable? Back then there was nothing like it. If RED has sold this, I would have bought one (or two), and even today I would still be happy with my purchase. With today's software, a little bit more performance could have been squeezed from it - just look at the results from RED's extra-super-special rendering option (I forgot what it's called). The 3K Scarlet could have been; the Illum is, but does not satisfy. Alas!

Two Items on my wish list this year.
1) 5K 500FPS Dragon Epic body (That is more affordable that the 4K Phantom Flex)
2) Some sort of control grip that could be easily integrated into a shoulder rig with an Arri Rosette attachment point. Like the Canon C300/C500 and Sony FS7 Control handles
