  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Modular Dragon OLPF sneak peak

+1 for underwater - happy to help if needed

We are... You might have noticed that Sean R our original and top field tech has dedicated most if his time in the last 6 months traveling to different waters around the world testing different filters andworking with Graeme and the engineers on new glass.

Truly clear also brings major colour weirdness with sensor response to a lot of beyond visible wavelengths.

So then what would a clear OLPF be beneficial for?

Jarred,

This is is the kind of "noise" I like to read on reduser!

Take a challenge, create a new user experience.

Thanks again to you and Graeme for for letting me have an early peek at DEB build.

So for example when switching between the old and new olpf do you have to change something in the camera software also, that it is aware which olpf is has installed? Or is the software tweaking for both olpf's exact the same?

Hey max,

it's been stated that the OLPF affects the optical path and does not change the software.

I know you are going to be all over this one John :)

hey Fire Chief,
do not forget :) I want a new one OLPF as of now, but still with 1 stop of light more in the high lights ;)
ehehehhe

Listening real close to this :-)

True, but wouldn't surprise me if camera may need to be "informed' of an OLPF swap. Not sure camera will be able to detect it on it's own. IE user may need to go into a menu and under "OLPF" select the type that had just been installed (OLD, NEW, IR, ND, etc).

That was indeed my question, but probably not needed, which would be nice, so there is less room for error :)

Good point. Might be the case, or just slate it.

I love having the options.

As others have said it would be nice to have an updated "old" Dragon OLPF which allows cleaner low light and better colour fidelity without the halation/red dots etc.

I'm sure I remember that the new OLPF also required some hardware modification which was why it had to be returned to Red to make it so - not just a software/firmware change? I guess this no longer the case?

This is fantastic news for me!!!! Most of my shooting is either underwater or animals hunting in very low light but I was not prepared to sacrifice color fidelity and highlight protection for the older OLPF for all the other stuff the camera is used for now I can have the best of both worlds.
Thanks Team Red for all the hard work.

Will these new interchangeable OLPFs work with the MX sensor too? It would be awesome if they could!

Also wondering this, I know that the current ones are the OLPF's for the Dragon, but if it's going to be modular there should be a way to create an improved OLPF for the Epic-MX that improves that sensors tech a little?

Weird people. But trust me there are plenty of us.

Science, landscape, plants and wildlife, covert ... All reasons to shoot odd parts of the spectrum :)

This, is the best, simplest explanation, in a nutshell.

My only concern is swapping things out in the field as some folks will most certainly do, then complain about dots all over their shots. Guess it should be asked at some point, how much to replace the sensor once it's been scratched?

Is this module going to become the new standard configuration, or remain an optional add on?
