  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Modular Dragon OLPF sneak peak

Extreme modularity! Exchangeable OLPFs, thats sick! :) Wow. Fantastic news, it's great to have options, now even there. As if Dragon alone isn't good enough already. You guys rock.

I love these surprises coming out of nowhere.

4 screws similar to the lens mount and the screws already there if you look into your port hole on your dragon.

It needed to be screws as the filter needs to be flat as possible to the sensor for optical precision, snap-ins and push-fits don't accomplish that. Flatness is measured in microns when you are talking about focus planes so you want it to be solid.

This actually concerns me a little. Torquing screws to a precise amount can be tricky... over-torquing can be disastrous.

Okay I don't mean to sound like a jerk but I am not going to drop another $9500 for a camera that has more noise than the Current one, sounds like to me that you are not going to fix this issue just cover it up with a new toy/item? Noise is a very bid deal to me and my clients!!! I really want this camera too just got my email notification and has been eating me up inside non-stop :(

It's o.k. to not upgrade, but shaming what many of us believe to be a fantastic option as a toy is, well... misplaced, IMO.

Just order the Dragon with the old OLPF. Done.

Really impressed with this approach and the future capabilities new OLPF's will bring to us. Great move by the RED team!

Couple of quick thoughts - I share the concern that Elsie just noted on the torque specs and an earlier posts on field swap-outs with risk of contamination and dropping screws...
Might the final design incorporate captive screws? Perhaps a thicker flange to accommodate would also help keep flatness assured? Especially if you swap OLPF's frequently.

As far as field service - an idea for consideration (inspired from my now lost film days). A portable pop-up tent - perhaps made of tyvek - sized for an EPIC with a clear window and two elastic arm inserts (just like the old film changing bags). Foldable, lightweight and useful anytime you need to swap a mount or OLPF - would have the added benefit of trapping any parts, screws or tools from dropping to the ground. Internal flaps could even make it suitable for a silica gel drying station.

dont be a pussy :) just like changing the the lens mount 4 screws... its pretty hard to screw it up.

People often make the comment that a new REDCINE release or a new sensor or firmware release is essentially RED giving us a new camera. But I'm thinking of a situation where a script I have requiring IR visuals in some scenes but conventional footage throughout the rest of the script always left me scratching my head trying to figure out how to do that effect justice. And now comes the solution using the same camera for both effects.

So in this instance at least, RED has not only given me a new camera, but an additional one to boot.

SEMPER RED!

Neil, as one of the guy that has been raising the noise issue on the new OLPF new calibration Dragon, because I've been shooting more than 4 months with the old OLPF Dragon; I can tell you UPGRADE, Dragon is amazing, period. But as I did some low light blue screen in tungsten and a few others stuff like that with the old OLPF Dragon (and result just turned out incredibly good), I had a bit of problem with the new OLPF for those situation.

I thought swapping out OLPFs meant having to send in your Dragon for calibration. If this new modular OLPF system is user replaceable, what about camera calibration? Is this on the user end as well?

We are... You might have noticed that Sean R our original and top field tech has dedicated most if his time in the last 6 months traveling to different waters around the world testing different filters andworking with Graeme and the engineers on new glass.
.
Sean will need a vacation after this

I think when they do this, the camera will either sense the OLPF like it does with the mount or you select which OLPF is on in camera and it will have all the pre-calibration settings in the next camera firmware. So all you would need to do is a black shade, or select which OLPF you put on then do a black shade.

This is great news, thanks Jarred! However, I didn't see an answer to the Motion Mount question. Will the MM still fit/work as normal?
