  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Modular Dragon OLPF sneak peak

Love it. Thanks for the update jarred. Need a beta tester let me know. We are shooting non-stop these next several weeks for IBC.

When it is blowing someone will make wind-barriers but then again others will make windmills ...
THANK YOU Jarred, Red team, Graeme, ... all! That little comment from Jarred (Tuning the science to the different olpfs is no trivial matter) says it all. You guys really work and work to optimize and perfect these cameras that we as shooters spend so much time with out in the field. I just love being a part of this. T

Would there be any benefit with coating any of the Black surfaces that light bounces off with VANTABLACK material?

That stuff looks cool Antony... Ill pass it along to the engineers to investigate. It looks like it generates quite a bit of heat in the process of being super black but I don't know what that means exactly.

In a similar tone I belive Panavision tried something similar to this on a Dragon a few months ago and it actually made things worse so they canned it. Stray light can be tricky.

How exactly will we swap these OLPFs? With screws, or snap in, or inserts?

4 screws similar to the lens mount and the screws already there if you look into your port hole on your dragon.

It needed to be screws as the filter needs to be flat as possible to the sensor for optical precision, snap-ins and push-fits don't accomplish that. Flatness is measured in microns when you are talking about focus planes so you want it to be solid.

A standard OLPF that works on every sensor from all manufactures will never happen.. unless every camera from every manufacture used the same sensor. Its a very specific relationship between sensor and OLPF as you guys have all seen.

And yes.. tuning an OLPF and the color science isn't trivial. Good thing we have already done the first 2 OLPFs.

The Module install is pretty straight forward... we can do it or you can do it. Getting the old stuff out is the hardest part. The new "module" goes in easy and 4 little bolts and you are done. You dont need to touch any glass and you dont need to worry about putting it upside down or right side left. The front of the module is marked so you can see which one it is by just looking at the sensor so rental customers can quickly see which one is in camera.

At any rate... we are testing prototypes now and I expect these to be ready in 6-8 weeks after we get out of tooling. The OLPF Modules will be for sale in the store so you can choose whichever one you want or all of them and change at will. If you want to keep whatever OLPF you have in your camera right now you can still send us your camera and we can transfer your OLPF into a new module and send it back to you.

There will be 2 modules available out of the gate obviously ( The new OLPF and the OLD OLPF ) and IR PASS, ND, Clear and a few specialty ones will come after.

Did I hear you say ND !

Yeeeehaaaa !!!

Im curious if any of these olpfs will be lowlight sensitive or aid in gathering cleaner high iso values. That one alone would accomplish so much.

Hi Jarred,

Any extra screws ito be included in the kit. Also, I and sure many others have thought about some sort of semi-clean room/ similar technique, for changing these OLPF's in the field. A biohazard hood, with negative pressure, in yjis case came to mind, but was instantly dismissed. Any ideas on some negative pressure type of apparatus ? Is the tools a quad torque screwdriver?

Thank you very much

Fury

Hey Jarred, any plans to make a LOWLIGHT version of the NEW OLPF?

Ie an ALT of the NEW OLPF (with improved skintones, better tungsten, better flares, etc)...but optimized for 2000 iso, etc?

That could be fantastic also!

May end up looking like a nice combo of the OLD and NEW OLPF.

best.

Pricing per OLPF? Would love to collect them all.

A guess is that they will be exclusive to Dragon, since they have to be tuned to each sensor. But that does not mean people won't be able to try it, you just might get some funky results as each sensor would respond differently.

Battistella

Not sure why additional OLPFs couldn't be developed for MX, right? I am not saying it is worth the cost of additional development, but isn't it possible?

That kinda describes the old OLPF... It lets in more light and gives you a higher ASA but you make the tradeoff in the high end latitude and color accuracy.

To some people, super clean at high ASAs is more important than anything else. Those are the guys screaming right now about noise and prefer the old OLPF.

To some people that have the ability to light a scene they are going to prefer color accuracy and higher end protection over everything else. Those guys are the ones really happy right now with the new OLPF.

With this.. you get both. Just switch as you need.

Amazing. Besides RED being already fantastic, it feels like that RED is able to turn the few little "bugs" from the past into great solutions for the future. Love it.

Thank you.

so this will fix the noise issue? Please confirm thanks (I got my email about my Dragon Upgrade and the only thing that is making me wait is the noise issue)

Well if you can just have both, that would be awesome. Now how would these factor in with post process? would programs auto recognize etc?

"and a few specialty ones will come after."

I like the specialty ones idea a lot. The more choices the better.

What I don't like is that few well known lenses can not be used because it gets in the way, can you make it deeper perhaps so we won't have this problem?
