  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mattebox....

Jims answer above is as much as you will know till around NAB.

This was just a sneak peek for you guys... if you guys don't like sneak peeks and feel you must demand alot of information from them, let me know and we can stop showing stuff till its shipping.

Jarred,

don't say so. You said it so many times, and you never could resist to leak out the info you wanted to leak out :)

Its your nature to tease, you could not resist to, even if you would like to do it by heart!

You must accept yourself as you are, you won't change yourself anymore (I expect/suspect).

That being said, no offense included...

Cheers,
Axel

(who has no MB yet and therefor options to choose from on the horizon now)

I'm assuming that it has two 4x5.65 non-rotating stages. There doesn't appear to be room for a circle pola, but Arri makes a great 4x5.65 tray for their LMB-5 that has a built in circle pola and a rotating gear. If RED doesn't make one of these to go along with it, I'd imagine that accessory will be quite popular from Arri.

Clearly you guys are pretty close to being done with this MB, but I can't help but put in the things to keep an eye out for if you haven't already. Some of these are so much of a given that it's stupid.

1: Build a 4x5.65 rotating pola tray. The tray with filter from Arri will likely cost more than the whole RED "Not LMB-5". :)

2: Paint the inside of the MB hood with some matte/crinkle black coating. Reflective CF = bad news.

3: Have multiple rings available at launch. I'm sure 117mm will be standard, as it's the OD of your lenses [unless I'm forgetting, which I may have], but an 80mm, 87mm, 95mm, 104mm, 110mm, 114mm and several other sizes should be available on the day. As accessories, of course.

4: The rings should have a "stop" in them so you don't slip the MB too far onto the lens. This is a given as I'm sure you guys have drawn some inspiration from the LMB-5 and wouldn't have missed that feature.

5: The eyebrow should be able to fold down and cover the entire front of the mattebox. Some companies place their hinge too far back on the mattebox hood, so the eyebrow can't fold all the way down or it can't do it without struggling. That totally sucks. Being able to close the eyebrow over the mattebox hood is a must!

6: Make the eyebrow easy to attach/remove. I see 4 taps up top... two on each side. It should only have one on each side. Nobody wants to undo 4 screws to pop the eyebrow off. I assume all those taps are just to hold the actual tie-down.

7: Make the screws that hold the eyebrow in place black instead of red or silver. Anything visible from the front of the mattebox needs to be black. Little red thumbscrews will stand out in reflections... black won't.

8: If the eyebrow is CF, coat it with that same matte/crinkle black coating to prevent reflections.

9: Make sure that the mattebox hood is wide enough to prevent vignetting. It looks a little tight as is, but it could just be the picture.

10: Make hard-mattes available... they're a must! Make them cheap [I assume they wouldn't be included...] and easy to swap out... once again, look to the LMB-5 for direction if you haven't already.

11: Counter-clock the tighten/loosen knob that holds the mattebox onto the lens about 45 degrees [so it sticks out at a 45˚ angle on camera left]. Having that knob up at the top puts it in danger of scratching filters when they go in and out of the mattebox.

12: If you do ears/flags on the side, make the entire apparatus removable for those that don't want to deal with them.

Keep up the good work... looks like a great start! I assume you've already done most of what I've asked for, they all seem like givens. Can't wait to play with it. I know more than one person who'll want one of these suckers... :)

Brook has said almost everything you should be considering for the mattebox. He points to things only an adept AC knows. Observations like the one on the poorly located lens clamping knob is truth - the only thing that shiny metal protrusion will get you is reflections and scratched filters.

Let some ACs, who have worked with the best bits (like Arri MB20s or Chrosziel AC6xx and AC8xx) on features and commercials, make suggestions before you get too far along.

Mitch... I agree with you. But we also need to let our customers know that there are options available soon. I don't want to hear "why didn't you tell us?".

Jim

As a Leader we should have our options but some people did not ask for it !!!

BWB

Prototype remember Brook :) ... but you have some good points in there, thanks for the feedback. Obviously things like the shiny screws wont be there.

Our lenses are 114mm by the way.

The only thing I can think of would be to give it more of a matte finish. Aside from Brook's suggestions, a matte finish would be nice. It seems a little shiny in the picture. Other than that, it looks AWESOME! So, um when will we see a picture of Scarlet?

dont worry.. the mattebox is alot duller than it looks in that photo. And as for the clamp-on post being vertical, we canvased some of the best "real" AC's in the world and they told us to keep it that way for numerous reasons... and we trust them, as you in fact recommend we do. ( I guess thats why arri puts it straight up as well... )

but we are listening.. so keep the feedback rolling.

Hey, you know I'm just trying to help. :) Thanks for catching me on the lens OD.

Not all of the clamp-on backs for the LMB-5 have the post straight up... it varies by lens size and manufacturing date. Ultimately, those with their hands on the prototype will be able to judge best, but it looks a little close in the original picture.

That is a big pile of Bullshit, nice attempt Brook. LMB-5 has always had the clamp at 12 oclock, and same with the LMB-4. Please RED, keep that post where it is. I am glad you are taking advice from the AC's who job depends on these details, and not from Armchair guys that really do not know what they are talking about. Keep listening to the feedback, but make sure you weigh it accordingly.

Sorry Joel but Brook is right. There are many different products and accessories ARRI offers and I have seen the clamp in other positions then 12 oclock.

So you might want to get a napkin out as you have a bit of egg right there on your face.

Hey Joel, I would watch the flames. You usually just end up burning yourself on Reduser. Lots of talented/experienced guys on here and Brook W. ain't no slouch.

Joel... Brook knows his shit, and when we are collecting feedback, his is weighed pretty high.

I've warned you before to play nice..
