  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mattebox....

We will offer two models... this one 1st (and cheapest). This one should be within a month or two at the most. Price announced at release.

jim

Any idea if MKII will have 6x6 filter stages? It's pretty clear this one won't take them.

at last, some solid info that actually allows me to plan around a purchase. (all things subject to change, of course...)...that's good news, thank you very much. the 1st and cheaper should be perfect for my lightweight set-up.

Oh wow, now that I take a closer look at it, does this really have no rod mounting and only a single fixed stage?

this is one of two models--i think most people will hold out for the 2nd, later and more expensive model, if i'm inferring correctly, because this one is something of a glorified sunshade. which will work well for mobile set-ups...

a little hard to tell from the photo, any chance we can see a few more angles on this thing?

This looks to be a competitor to the lightweight Arri LMB-5 clip-on. One would guess 2 - 4x5.650 filter trays...possibly rotating but probably not to keep the costs down. This should be great for steadicam and those who are moving up from 1/3" cameras and want to keep the size down as much as possible.
The previous mattebox posted by Jim a while back looks like it's competing with the Arri MB-20 in terms of size and features.

If at all possible,
many of us need to know, even if loosely...

A) matte box design plan (clip on/rod mount/filter sizes/#)
B) general price point
C) release/availability dates

Follow focus plans?

I know you guys have a lot on your plate, but we want/need to be able to consider Red designed/priced equipment before we overspend/under-whelm ourselves with the alternatives.

Jims answer above is as much as you will know till around NAB.

This was just a sneak peek for you guys... if you guys don't like sneak peeks and feel you must demand alot of information from them, let me know and we can stop showing stuff till its shipping.

...sits down...
...mumbles incoherently to self....

Theres just now way of fooling you guys here on REDuser!
YES its a clip-on. Yes it will most like have a 2 stage. I will have a rotating filterslot if you rotate the whole thing.
I looks like they are not reinventing the wheel(and why should they)
Just making a (hopefully) cheaper version of the LMB5.
For comparison the LMB5 is aprox $1800 with one ring.
I looks sexy, light and not overdesigned.
What you need to consider is price/durability and therefore personal use/rental.
If the price is low enough, then this is the sexiest choise

I think it would be fair to say that this and the second one could both be "modular" in ways similar to the MB20 and the coming MB29. Modularity is the name of the game when it comes to RED right?

Since they'll be wanting to give everyone the choice of what they want, I wouldn't be surprised if Red Mattebox MK 1 shown here fits somehow into Red Mattebox MK 2, thereby allowing folks who couldn't originally afford a swingaway option etc the opportunity to upgrade at a later date.

That wasnt directed to you really JD I promise heh heh heh.

Its ok to ask (its human nature).. people just dont start to get mad about it.

A 6x6 swingaway mattebox just got "erased" because of a 4x5.65 clip-on? Two totally different products.

What about this ARRI MB29 ??

Anybody have some details?

Emmanuel,

I mentioned it briefly in the accessories section a few weeks ago. Seems like I'm the only one who noticed it at Broadcast live in london.

Its the new MB 19, but with modularity like the MB20. Should be a slightly cheaper alternative to MB 20. Probably 4x5.65 trays.

I assume that this first model is a lightweight clamp on mattebox. Would be a nice addition to my MB-20 II.
