  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Helix vs. DJI Ronin - Pros and Cons???

I am in process to order Ronin or Helix.
I travel a lot. I do not care if product is $3,000 or $4,000. I must have RELIABLE system which will LAST.
Ronin is about 30Kgs heavy when packed to travel. Helix does look interesting. We do not have any Dealer stocking Ronin or Helix in Sydney, so any further advice is very welcome.
Thank You for you help.

Think about what cameras you're going to use. Unlike many people here, I use different cameras virtually every job. While I know I'll never float an Alexa on either rig, I hope to go from Epic, C300/500, F55's some DSLR and back again. If you're like me, whatever platform that makes the switch as easy and hassle free has a clear advantage. Something that my AC's can perform while I light a set. My Ronin comes in this upcoming week. Ease, simplicity and speed of set up will be vital.

Please let me know how you feel about Ronin. I can wait 2 moths to be sure ;-)
At the moment i am having funny thoughts about Helix.

Ned - you can use both Alexa-M and Alexa-XT-M on the Ronin - I will be posting about this soon... ;o)

OMGosh why would you, with so many excellent cameras that are 1/4 the weight. People are packing so much gear onto these Gimbles its sort of defeating the purpose of a lightweight mobile camera platform. Even an Epic with all the AKS needed makes my arms want to fall off after 3-5minutes of operating.

Erich, it's the same old story. We could have a never ending discussion about how Dragon can deliver everything that Alexa can - but you will still have clients / DP's that will demand the Alexa - what ever their personal reason is.
I own RED - that doesn't mean I will force onto my clients. I have done too many Alexa jobs to ignore the demand... ;o)

I use the Alexa constantly but I just can't imagine even in M form gimbalizing it. What do you do with the record module? Put it on your belt. LOL.

Will do. Right now, I'm researching the best way to outfit it. I'll probably go the Paralinx, Cinemizer, Tilta route. For me, because I use different cameras virtually every job, the software and calibration is crucial to me. I need it to be fast, quick and easy to teach my AC - (so I barely have to screw with it). All that said, they need to start offering spare batts and the XL arms asap. Being able to leave a battery in the rear position or use an F55 is something I need from my gimbal.

Thanks.
I will have a chance to see Ronin next 2 weeks, we have two dealers here.
It is heavier then Helix but as a Working Bang for the $$ i can not fault it.
Amira would love it ;-)

Tilta for wireless focus...? If so wondering how heavy it is vs. RedRock...?
Not to knock RR but the quality of Tilta's accessories in terms of materials and machining is far better. I've busted more than a few RR tie downs due to the soft metal they use. Not a fan. I've been totally impressed by everything I've tried from Tilta. Regarding their Wireless FF, I'm going on faith and past experience with their gear.

Just did one of the Helix Video Conference training sessions today. Super helpful. Hien, GT and the Letus team are incredibly supportive and proactive. Very impressed with their customer service. Looking forward to playing with Helix when arrives...

At 0.32 in the video when moving around the turtle statue there is up and down movement. Wonder why?

Operator walking. Gimbals can't compensate for vertical movements translated from their steps. Operator needs to learn how to walk like a Tai Chi Master Ninja...

Anything to pass on from this meeting?

When's their next delivery stage?

Was that video even fixed in post?

We didn't talk delivery. We just talked about balancing. It was a walkthrough of how first to balance your Helix physically, and then how to use software...afterwards. Didn't take notes, unfortunately, otherwise I'd share...What was probably most helpful was seeing Helix get balanced on camera by instructor...as reference.

Do you have pics of your setup?

Really leaning towards the HELIX.

I guess a Motion Mount would help deal with weight issues.
