  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

lenses for red raven

Look at this. Turns out RAVEN 4K is almost EXACTLY same width as Academy 35.

And it can compare to FF35 and S35. ;)

I for one think both format references need to coexist with RED and especially with raven since the mount is EF only and there's lots of shooters out there who started off from the stills world. That cinema/ moving pictures is a different world and a lot of photo guys don't get it is a different story :)

I don't want to be rude but.

Red Digital Cinema Camera Company.

Raven is a cinema camera, therefore cinematography standard should be applied. Speaking of Raven in photography standard makes it look bad.
The cinema standard lens set is often 18-25-35-50-85-100 applied to 35mm academic (though some manufactured have their coverage extended to fit the emergence of Red 7 years ago.

There is no crop factor, the lens should be spoken of with its inner specifications. Focal lenght, coverage, and after that the the size of the sensor. The field of view is something the user's experiences create.
The fact newcomers need a reference to what they know is a proof a 5D'ness. Before 5D/1D, we were talking cinema standard.
Speaking of crop factor make you look amateurish to the eye of many people.

Personally I only began shooting video on the 5D & am proud of where I'm holding, I'm on a c300 & put a deposit for raven! If I'm talking with a film pro in the real world & don't want to come off as newb/amateurish, yes I probably wont want to use FF35mm crop factor references, but on the forums I have no issue since that's what it's about here..feeling fine with being vulnerable & admitting we dont know something

Good for you .

P.S. @ Nick now there's something I didn't know , Raven is Academy 35 ....learn something new everyday !

Distortion doesn't change with different sensor sizes as it is native to the particular lens you are using some wides have lots others don't. You just see more or less of it based on fov of image circle. Use the tokina 11-16 if you want wide, it has very minimal distortion for an 11mm lens. It will be kick ass on raven. I have one in. Every mount, ef, nikon and duclos PL.

Nice. So let's use S35 as the standard. To quickly get the equivalent Raven-lens just do this: divide by ten, double the value and subtract. It's much easier than it sounds:

I'm thinking I need the FoV of an 85mm --> divide by ten = 8.5 --> double it to 17 and subtract: 85-17 = 68mm. (applicable to all FLs =)
I'm thinking I need the FoV of an 50mm --> divide by ten = 5 --> double it to 10 and subtract: 50-10 = 40mm.

Only accounting for field of view…

Why not save a step and just divide by 5 then subtract?

For a thread about lenses, this thread is high on talk about frame size semantics and low on talk about lenses, haha!

My list of potentials depends on whether I'm going with Optitron to control them or not... and that depends on whether everyone else signs up to get that Optitron and we get a killer discount! So please consider it!

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...titron2-Wireless-remote-for-Canon-Nikon-glass

Here's what I'm considering choosing from:

Fast zoom electronic control set (Optitron plus put a gear on the zoom and control via a motor)
Tokina 11-20 2.8
Sigma 18-35 1.8
Canon 24-70 2.8
Canon 70-200 2.8

Additional fast electronic controlled prime options (24, 30 & 35 likely unnecessary due to 18-35, 135 maybe invalidated by 70-200):
Sigma 24 1.4
Sigma 30 1.4
Sigma 35 1.4
Sigma 50 1.4
Canon 85 1.4
Canon 135 2.0

Super light weight setup with electronic control:
Canon 20 2.8 (405g)
Canon 24 2.8 STM (125g)
Canon 28 1.8 (310g)
Canon 40 2.8 STM (130g)
Canon 50 1.8 STM (162g)

Fully Manual Cinema style - price/performance:
Tokina's 11-16 2.8 cinema version (seems to have horrible focus throw)
Duclos 11-16 2.8 cinema version (seems better, most expensive)
GL Optics conversion of 11-20 (nice that they chose the 11-20, seems a bit heavy but maybe nice)
Rokinon Cine DS 16 2.0 (likely middling quality but probably nice)
Allstar conversion of 18-35 1.8 (cheaper, lighter 120 degree throw maybe not a problem with the right FF?)
GL Optics conversion of 18-35 1.8 (more expensive, heavier, 300 degree throw)
Zeiss Milvus 50mm 1.4
Zeiss Milvus 85mm 1.4
Zeiss Milvus 100mm 2.0
Allstar conversion of Nikon 70-200 (seems cheap and good)

Fully Manual Cinema style - fancy:
Zeiss standard speeds T2.0 - 10mm, 12mm, 16mm - probably really expensive - can be converted to EF?
Angenieux Style 16-40 - $17K
Angenieux Style 30-76 - $17K
Hopefully can find the previous generation (DP) for a lot less - they had a killer deal on those around NAB.

If anyone spots an old Angenieux, let me know. Don't grab it for yourself... or DO grab it, and lend it to me!

Or heck with it, just get that Cooke CXX 15-40 2.0 and the Zeiss 9.5-18 Ultrawide zoom :P

Anything I missed?

I end up using CP2's a lot, it's probably the most flexible lens out there. I bet someone with a RAVEN could shoot an entire movie with the super speed 50mm T1.5 cp2 and it would look great.

I would definitely go with a Xenar III set on Raven. It starts at a 14mm with 2.2 and will be soon completed with the 135mm. And you could use both PL and EF. And for me the image of the Xenar III are on the same level as the Ultras.

I am thinking about buying Carl Zeiss CP.2 35mm Super Speed. But what do you thing? What's the best to have as first lens with Raven? 35mm or wider? In Super Speeds 35mm is the lowest number. Thanks

Thanks. What about distortion? Here my concern would not be the distortion being amplified by the crop itslef, rather having to constantly be using a wider lens.

Say that on s35 using a 12mm is not so common to use & has a more distorted look that would almost border on deliberate (were not talking very expensive cine lenses), however say on the raven you would use a 12mm for a standard wide & dont want that distortion, will this be an issue?

Distortion doesn't change with different sensor sizes as it is native to the particular lens you are using some wides have lots others don't. Let's be clear on what we mean by 'distortion'. It simply means either pincushion or barrel. :-) Lots of SLR lenses have quite a bit of distortion, which is okay for digital cameras as you can easily correct it. Are you going to correct it in your movie files? Anyway, Ben is correct in what he said, regardless of terminology.

BTW the Zeiss Standard Speeds start at 16mm. Fairly wide for S35. Only if you can adapt them though. A set of 5 can go for, what, $20K?

Canon CN-E 24mm T1.5 is very good for RAVEN no?

thats what i thinked, but 24 becomes like a 45mm so not good for wide. I think last facebook thread of jarred might be one solution, the rehoused sigma 18-35 f1.8 well its not a cine lense the sigma but tje work from GL may be good. Bad is that for 3.5KUS$ you get only 100degrees of rotation, option for 300 degree is +1000 so very expensive at this point, but hey currently I found no best option for wide and fast lense.
Of cousre CP, CN etc are FF so i dont go for. GL sigma 18 35 is APS C so ideal for raven.
only 9 steps but.. well I think currently is the best option
Unless someone point to a valid PL to EF for UltraPrimes

I am not good at lens vs sensor "maths". Please can someone explain why is better to have the lenses that cover identical field as sensor in the camera? What's the difference? What happen when I use FF lens on the Raven? Thank you

Using a FF on raven or like using a S35 on a say 2/3" sensor, means that not all the area captured bybthe lens will go to the sensor, only the area of the sensor, so you will loose the difference say ftom m3/4 to FF.
This is not a problem unless you go to wide shooting. If you use a 25mm FF lense on raven, then youll get only the center area say like the divide by 2 well bt 1.87 so is like zooming to 1.87 so at thevend you dont get a 25mm wide distance as you only get the area of the center of FF that covers the say m4/3 so this is like if you were shooting with a 45mm. Some shoots lije interviews requires wide angle and using a 24mm FF in raven will be not ok for live interviews inperson etc.. my 2 cents
