A clean Mint #35... from the early 90s before they discounted production is probably your best bet.

Here are some compressed R3Ds from a show last weekend at the Georgia Theatre that were captured on Epic Dragon with gorgeous 35-70 2.8 APO Aspherical (thanks for the inspiration Lakis;)

Hey Guys,

Here's a little one I did a few months back on the Dragon STH and I rated at 1000iso because I want a deeper DOF. This archive has 5 million photographs in their archive dating back to the first days of Italian photography. They are just begingin to release some of their images to the public. If some of you wonder why I still get a bit nostalgic and passionate over film, when you see the importance of that much film negative in one place it reminds you of how fragile things are and how quickly things change. Some of the neg is well over 100 years old.

Love the colors here Mark!

That's awesome Mark, can you give some details about the speed/ iso? I'm glad I inspire you with one lens finally after you inspired me for 20 ;-)
As David said also the colors through this Leica lens (at least) are addictive/magical! I really prefer to look through these lenses than with my eyes!

Thanks David and Lakis! Yes, the colors these Leicas capture are phenomenal and so far I've found the 35-70 2.8 apo examplary in so many ways.

On this shoot we had 3 Reds with matched settings of 800 ISO 23.98 1/48 and 10:1, two owner/operators on stage and I was front and center on a riser beside soundboard. The producer likes a lot of movement which kept it interesting instead of a standard constant wide. About 4 hours with one 20 min break so a good workout too!

Used the summricon C´s last week. For some table top close focus stuff. Those lenses kicks ass. We compared to ziess super macro and a CP2 and the Leica kick the other lenses ass. It was quite fun first we where rigging with the CP´2 and though all looked good. Then late same day we got the super macro and where really happy about the results, some on set still liked the CP´2 but when the summricon came on it was no debate. Download and look 1:1 it´s nuts to see the separate pixels of the screen and so on.

I still thrilled to see whats possible to get out of the dragon sensor this was F5.6, 800ISO

Hey Bjorm,
thanks for sharing!

The 100mm Leica R macro APO is pretty much the standard by which FF still lenses are measured. I'm not surprised to see this kind of richness, sharpness and general yumminess out of the Sumicron's.

Agree, this was a 29mm and I used the summilux C´s before and those also has that richness and so on and I guess the price point made me think the sumicron C´s would not be on par but for some reason I actually like the sumicron better especially at a bit higher stops.

The color rendition for the CP-2´s was like old betasp copied 10 times compared to the sumicron that looked like a single layout straight from the scanner to D1. Bad refernces I know, but it just felt so much cleaner then the Zeiss glass.

Hi guys,

I have a project coming up next year that we'll be using EF-mount Leica R lenses for, and I'm wondering if anyone can point in the direction of a directory or something that will list lens info for these lenses? I'm mainly worried about figuring out front filter diameters so that I can fit our matteboxes to the lenses without issues, and figuring out which lenses (if any) require electronic control of the iris. The lenses are currently in California, and I'm on the far side of the planet and won't be able to see them before we start shooting, so I'm keen to track down any info I can.

The lens set we'll be using is:

1) LEICA 19MM SERIES II F2.8 Serial no 35***** (Built in ND filter) 10 holes

2) LEICA 24 MM F2.8 (6 holes)

3) LEICA 28MM F2.8 (6 holes)

4) LEICA 35MM F1.4 ROM (6 holes and has an electronic chip)

5) LEICA 50MM F1.4 (6 holes)

6) LEICA 100MM APO Macro F2.8 (10 holes)

7) LEICA 70-180 F2.8 (10 holes with an electronic chip)

Can anyone shed any light on these? Or point me in the direction of a website that can? (nothing I've tracked down so far seems to lay things out very clearly.

Cheers,

Mark

I doubt you will get electronic Iris control or lens data. I have been asking for a lens metadata field which would allow a user defined lens focal length to be entered for dum lenses but it never materialized.

You could probably get all of the primes to have equal 80mm fronts (not sure about the zoom) but you have to factor in barrel telescoping with the 100mm

David

I just did a 4 day shoot on my Leica R (duclos mod) set. All the fronts are a 77mm thread. and 80mm diameter. I use a home made neoprene donut for the matt box. I cheap solution is to buy Drum kit dampeners or pads (round neoprene disk that sit on the drum heads) and cut them to size of opening and such. I always make the opening a bit smaller than the lens barrel so then squeeze on a bit and this also causes a cone effect so that the donut presses up agains the matt box and seals the opening. I hope this rambling all makes sense.

The best reference source I have found for Leica R lenses is the little blue book, Leica Camera and Lens Pocket Book. It was originally written by Dennis Laney but revised after his passing by Brian Bowers. Make sure to get the blue 8th edition (2012) which covers all cameras, screw-in and M lenses, S2 lenses and the full range of the R (reflex) lenses made from 1964 through 2009. Earlier editions don't cover the full range of the R's. Hard to find now but well worth owning. I use this book more than anything else as a reference.

The Leica Wiki generally includes filter info. It's a very good resource IMO.

I purchased adapters from Duclos for all of my Leica except the 135mm, which can't accept a screw-in filter due to the lens hood. These adapters are 80mm/77mm and allow for easy matte box use as well as the use of a common screw-in filter when traveling light.

Hello Guys!
I am really stoked about this thread, I think I've gone over many pages and read information here over 3 times or maybe more.

So after long wait, I decided to dive into the Leica R planet and Thanks to a Red User member here in the community I will have the chance to own my first Leica R set.

I will be sharing some images after testing the lenses and I just wanted to share with you guys that thanks to all the information and beautiful images you all posted here.

I would like to ask permission to be part of this pack.
Cheers Carlos.

Carlos,

No permission needed, come on in! You are welcome here.
