  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Shot a little thing with some Triumph Tigers last week! These are on the 19 V2 and 35LUX. Shot a few things with the 70-210angineaux as well.

Fun.

Great shots and glass selection David! How did you capture the first one, moving along with the bike?

Yup. Right bicep gimbal at 80K per hour, not strapped in. Oh, and those leather straps on my camera held up real good. Good test.

Here is the rough cut.

Wow, shooting on the edge there David. Love that rough cut. Great pace, execution, camera angles...

You're having waaay too much fun there in Florence :)

Ha Ha. Fun is rule number one. If it's no fun then what is the point!

I picked up a few lens and finally had a first look today. I have a 19 V2, 35 1.4 Lux (newest), 50 1.4 Lux (#38.....) and 80 1.4 lux (latest model)

I have a couple observations, the 50 was about what I was expecting on sharpness and blooming ( the first tests I did were to see how they perform wide open) very good with some color aberrations but generally pretty sharp at 1.4. After hearing how bad the 80 lux is wide open I was expecting worse results. I have to say the 80 looked pretty good at 1.4, there was CA but not a lot of lack of resolution, it seemed pretty sharp and of course got better as you stoped down but generally I was really pleased with the "look" of the 80. the 35 1.4 on the other hand let me down a bit, I have been hearing how stellar this lens is wide open but it only seemed to have slightly better CA control than the 50 at 1.4.

I do have a concern, after attaching the Leitax adapters and mounting them on the Dragon EF mount I felt that I wasnt quite getting infinity focus, Does anyone know if this is a common problen and if there is a solution?

You'll probably find that what's happening is with the adapter you're able to go past infinity, so you'll need to shim the Leitax adapter.

Didn't seem like I could ever get to infinity, pretty sure it didn't go past it, but I'll double check. If it never quite gets there then shims won't help and would only make things worse.

So it seems that most of my Leica Rs with the Leitax mount are no quite reaching infinity. I tested and compared my 50 Lux to a Canon 50 1.4 and the Canon was clearly sharper at infinity. I am thinking this issue has to do with the Leitax adapters or the red Canon EF mount or something else. I love some input here.

I strongly recommend to get your lenses mounts modified to a solid EF by Duclos or TLS... Adapters are wobbly and add an extra stress on the lens and are not safe. Too many spinning parts and red dots, you never know if you are removing the lens alone or the mount and the lens, etc...

I am using Leitax mounts (not removable adapters) but it seems that my rear element is just a bit to far from the sensor, as if the mount is a tiny bit too thick. I'm getting in touch with Duclos to see what they might know.

My bad Mark, I thought you were using adapters... ;)

Can anyone tell me if there is an optical difference between the 35 1.4 summilux 11143 and the 11144? Seems the earlier lenses are a little cheaper but not sure if the design has changed

Optical design is the same but Leica updated their glass/coatings every few years. The main difference I've noticed between the two are the colors.

Im looking to buy a 135mm. It seem they are all the same and all from Canada, is there a newer model or a recommended model to purchase or has there always bee just the one design?

The 135 was the first one in my set and turned me on to Leica R. its a beauty.

The factory in midland produced excellent glass and their lens designer there is famous. See if you can track down the Leica lists guide it has a ton of info on every lens serial and camera body ever produced.

There were 2 versions of the 135 Elmarit v1 1962–1968 with red lettering, then v2 from '68 to '91 (SN#229... to 35...). For color matching, aim for one made within a few of your others.

The biggest thing to look for is this lens is prone to have separation in the elements (sudden rainbow effect when viewing the inner optics). Out of about 10 copies, half or more arrived with separation in the elements, none of which was cited (and all were later copies from the 80s and 90s). If the separation is along the very outside it usually won't have any affect, but if it overlaps closer to the middle that portion of the captured imagery will render noticeably blurry.

Good copies are great though especially at the prices they usually go for.
