  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Latest Scarlet Beta firmware = 5K FF 24fps!!! @ 9:1 Compression

No luck here... And guys, there was a bug in a previous firmware which made the gui show more fps while 5k was selected. But there was no way to really record more than 12fps.

BTW, can you please make a hashfile of the firmware-file you have flashed?

Can you post an image of the screen showing the installed firmware?

No need to apologize. In fact quite the contrary. If your camera is in fact shooting in 5k on these settings it proves that it can be done on the Scarlet.

I agreed

Yeah it would be nice to know for sure if it truly recorded the 24fps - not that I don't believe it.

With all the UHD cameras out there, this would keep the price and use of the Scarlet-X at top level. It would be so sweet to record with the full sensor...

This is great. :)
I know it would come eventually, it's like nature always find a way. Scarlet goes 5k by mistake, this would have been a petty good april fools joke if nothing else, but I guess it's a bit late for that, LOL.

One cool thing, Scarlet plays back Epic clips, Another cool thing, dragon can play back MX clips... I do not know if MX or scarlet can playback dragon clips....Something to try.

Any how. I think RED should really consider to make scarlet a 5k camera. even if the camera had to be sent in, even if there is a user extra cost involved to get such upgrade. Why let scarlet be like the other lowlife cameras out there that only shoots 4k, If they just would push scarlet to 5k 25fps, then all would be back in order again, Then there would be UHD cameras and then there would be red, who makes the cameras beyond UHD :)

I think this would be amazing, but have a feeling it's a mistake. It would make for a really muddy clarification on the camera see of things. 3 5k cameras. Scarletx, scarletd, and epic x. All at different frame rates. Again. I hope as much as the rest of you all that we get 5k out of our little scarlets. It won't hurt the rental market cause everyone is still gonna want the latest and greatest cam. Sure would help with my personal projects though

+1 Björn! ;) I have to agree, even if that is starting the whole "we want more for Scarlet"-thing again and i'm the guy who started the "shut up and shoot that Scarlet"-thread. Haha.

There are a few things that set a Scarlet-X apart from other UHD-players, but the gap gets smaller. Resolution is a huge selling point, the wider FOV would be great too... 5k at motion speed? Hell yes, thats every Scarlet owners dream. There is no way to deny that.

RED? If it's possible, if it was ever somehow on your radar, now would be a great time.

Red wants people in on Dragon, why would they unlock a feature that would discourage Scarlet owners from the upgrade? Now, if they turned around and said:

"We feel bad about making you guys wait over a year to begin the upgrade process. Everything changes, including the value of your Scarlet and you should have been aware of the risk that prices would go down. Scarlet MX is still a great camera, so don't feel too bad.

That said, we still like to reward people that believe in us, so those of you that saw Dragon's potential and went in on the Scarlet to Dragon upgrade line now have a few more options:

1) Trade in for new Scarlet Dragon
2) MX hardware upgrade to unlock 5K 24fps
3) Buy a new Scarlet Dragon and we'll upgrade your MX Scarlet to 5K 24fps for free"

That would be awesome.

I get what you mean, but as a scarlet owner the part of dragon that interests me is not resolution, its all the other parts that make up an image.
Anyway, If this was true I thought it might have been a move to try to market RED as having a product lineup that has already moved beyond 4K just as the market is being flooded with 4k options. Then being able to still keep the Scarlet MX at a higher price point. But it seems like only the OP's camera has it so i'm leaning towards a firmware bug lol :)

I think scarlet 5k is not really stepping on epic MX or dragons toes. Comon, Epic got quite a few more features than that, lower compressions, higher framerates etc. Dragon... well dragon is if you think of it in DR terms like 3 epic MX cameras so the comparison does not even have to be done. Dragon is a different camera, sure you can shoot nice with MX, scarlet, BM or what have you but the range/ resolution of the dragon puts it on its own shelf, And I have not seen any other cameras up the to compare it to. 6k@78 fps, Massive DR overtake huge sensor.... Well, there is no other camera that comes even close at the moment.

Everyone, I'm uploading R3Ds from last night right now. Crappy, underexposed, not blackshaded, and lots of red noise from Motion Mount glass... but I have a few GB of stuff. No promises that I will get it all done before my flight for Vegas. I also have camera log files but I don't want to necessarily make it easier for RED to figure out what caused this, because they obviously don't want to have Scarlet doing 5K at any compression ratios. So I will refrain from uploading the log file for now, just the R3Ds.

In other news, my camera is now only doing 12fps max. Just like everyone else. I think losing power during the firmware upgrade somehow has caused this loophole to be opened up. It's DEFINITELY a bug. 2 out of the 3 R3Ds that I shot will not play back on the camera. Only the 5K 40fps one plays back as far as I can tell.

Björn! +1

Even if Scarlet would do 5K 24fps it wouldn't do any harm to Epic IMHO.
I get that they need to protect Epic sales, but I don't think they need to - at least not anymore.
I don't think that high-end cinema studios (who would be the main target for 24fps) would buy into Scarlets instead of Epics!?

24fps is not enough for broadcast
24fps on Scarlet would make it a perfect B-Cam for Epic
24fps would make it a perfect match for indie productions
24fps @ 9:1 is not something high-end productions would want to use
the M-X sensor is now old news. The ones who care about quality and have the money will get Dragon anyway.
