  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Just learned something about the Canon BP-9xx batts. I've heard that Canon has in-fact discontinued them, BUT licensed them to BlueShape.

Dealers just got a new batch last month made in 2020 and are now in stock in a few places.

Typically Canon goes through product cycles. In the case of the 9 series there's several models that have been discontinued to be replaced by 955 and 975. Perhaps we'll see 960 and 980 or whatever.

I just recently got brand-new BPs from Canon through B&H so I highly doubt that is true.

Hi guys.
1. As someone else previously asked, could someone please tell us how to use our hydrogen imei for discount (apparently it doesn't let you use it in the promo code field).
2. RF lens support not ready yet OR has been scrapped all together?
3. If we order now, are delivery times still expected to be Dec/Jan as mentioned a few days ago?

Guys, could we hold off on the ND/adapter, battery, random footage related posts until these questions get seen and answered please. Seeing as it's day1 of the official release

Discontinuing sounds strange to me, too, as there are tons of cameras in the wild that use them. But when things get discontinued, they don't always just disappear overnight, as sometimes there are large amounts of stock that have already been produced. And as Phil said, Canon could be changing the model numbers or SKU's, which would technically mean the current batteries are discontinued(and explain the "rumors"), even though in practical terms it doesn't really affect the customer. I've seen this on other items, where the manufacturer slightly changed something and had to change the SKU, which technically discontinued the item(and generated discontinuation rumors).

But Canon licensing battery manufacturing to BlueShape does, at the very least, lend credence to the rumor.

I had to go through a long lengthy process of trouble shooting before I could get my discount applied, but eventually it did happen. Make sure your RED account is upto date (especially your current phone number.) . Have your Hydrogen on hand, another phone or camera available, have your initial receipt or invoice from RED and both IMEI numbers ready. They have to approve the discount, then a RED rep will get to you. Or at least it was my situation.

You have to go through the RED Hydrogen Customer Support to start, and they have to exhaust all options. (Just like any other form of trouble shooting. My reps were awesome by the way!)

Honestly, you get more functionality keeping your EF lenses and using an adapter, since you gain the ability to have behind the lens ND(both fixed and variable). And from so many reviews and video's I've seen, using EF lenses on RF mount Canon cameras with the Canon adapters, the EF lenses performed even better(AF) than they did on EF bodies. I have zero plans to get rid of my EF stills or cine lenses. The ability to use a behind the lens ND system is a gift.

Behind the lens ND is one of the reasons I like the Blackmagic URSA Mini family (Baboom! BMD/RED slam! JK I'm just teasing. :wink5:)

I have the Ursa Broadcast - 4K for $3.5K- which is the exact same body as the MiniPro and 12K that because it utilizes B4 broadcast lenses feel and operates like a traditional Betacam style camera, so is very nice for run and gun style shooting where beyond 4K isn't needed.

------

Seriously, the ND capability is nice and I won't get rid of all my EF lenses, but the wider and closer RF mount provides some significant optical benefits, as well as current and future benefits of the additional electronic contacts. Further, it appears likely that the bulk of Canon's future efforts in lens design will be toward the RF mount. I can't justify the investment in two sets of lenses in the current production economic climate and prefer the best optics I can reasonably afford.

A roadmap from Jarred would be helpful in deciding on purchasing or forgoing (at least in the short term) the Komodo or waiting to see what comes in DSMC3.

Got my order in within the first 12ish minutes but unfortunately my imie code wasn't working. Had to place another order much later (after I wrapped my shoot yesterday) in order to use my hydrogen discount. Really sucks that I have to give up my first/early order position to use the discount when it seems like many people had problems with their code not taking. (* Worth noting there was no problem with my code, I'm the original H1 owner and it worked later without having to reach out to Hydrogen/Leia or anything like that*)

I tried it over and over while I waited. (I am an original own as well, that had a preorder.) I saw from 7-10 days, change to 2 to 3 weeks, change to 3 to 4 weeks trying to get the discount. I do have an upcoming shoot that I would love to use it on, but it is not a must. The rep said they start shipping around the 24th or 25th. (Mine can take unpo 30 days.)

Chinatown, Singapore - Low Light // RED Komodo Journey 004

Hi, anyone using the Komodo with Teradek RT to control focus on EF non-cine glass without mounting external motors?

For example does this work?

Teradek RT thumbwheel -> Latitude -> CTRL input port on Komodo

Thanks

The silence on the RF mount question is concerning. I hope RED hasn't done an about face on RF capability. Giving them the benefit of the doubt I'll go with their last official position that support for RF is forthcoming, but the gentleman in the video calling it a "RF style" mount right off made my spidey sense wig a little bit.
