  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

He looks familiar. Man i almost bought an arri classic yesterday. I think im going to hold of and see what the komodo can offer. Thanks for the clip. skin tones look great.

It needs to be way under that if there's gonna be a point to even get it instead of a normal DSMC2. You still need side gear, so the final price for a complete Komodo package will be higher. But if it goes so high that other cameras in Red's lineup isn't a big leap to anymore, then it will lose its price momentum.
Under $5000 or as Jarred mentioned, it's probably gonna be just under, so probably $4995, is a much-needed price for this kind of camera on the current market.

I would assume that it will be exactly mathematically according to the cost of a Hydrogen. So $4995 for those with a Hydrogen and $6495 for those without. And I think that should be the price point this thing is aimed for. Above that, it's getting a bit high for this kind of camera in my opinion.

Mount is included and cfast slot is too right?

Yep - build in mount and cfast slot.

If you have Canon lenses, CFast 2.0 cards (I have quite a few from C200 days), it won't be much to get this camera up and running. I bought four of the Canon BPs for about $30 on mpb.com, so you can have all day power for less than $200 if you shop around. I also have the EOS R, so already have the adapters and the built-in variable ND filter.

So while there will be some other start up costs, they are the same as ANY other camera (batteries, lenses, cards). But looking forward to paying only for camera body when the Komodo is released.

So far, so good.

Agreed! Is it officially the first shot we actually see from Komodo?

We never knew if the frame of the Komodo Dragon (the animal) shown a few month ago was actually shot with it?

If Jarred and the RED Team need support in these difficult times, maybe they can open preorders tomorrow, with say a $1000 deposit? (Just trying to help ¥).

The actual animal was shot on Helium.

And it is technically not the first shot from Komodo we've seen. There were a few Komodo shots in the Michael Bay J-Lo Super Bowl commercial thing mixed with Helium and Monstro.... But.... We can say it is the first PROPERLY GRADED shot from Komodo ?... (the Bay thing was really I mean REALLY oversaturated and excuse my french but the three cameras looked like crap in it... #IMO)

Well we know Bay used it and we've seen that heavily graded footage and Jarred stated we saw some other stuff already too.

This is more the "latest thing" we know was shot on Komodo. Probably Jarred's most recent Stormtrooper from the sounds of it.

Indeed!
Worth noting that between any previously published footage and this one, there's probably a lot of work from Graeme that affects the final result.

A U D I O !!!
I have a feeling this footage was not meant to tease just the image quality but it's for internal mic/audio quality which doesn't sound good, but not that bad either...
if it's all internal mic and IF there was no noise reduction afterward (which I doubt due to some audio artifacts), we can say those fans on komodo are super quiet.

C'mon, now. It was Brad Pitt. Did it sound great? No. But I would be more surprised if they said "Yes, it was just the internal mic", than if the roof on my house collapsed on my head right now. ; )

Would love to see some outdoor footage. I think the Komodo will break the internet when its released.

You're right, totally forgot about this one. But as they were drowned out by the grading, we couldn't take these shots as references obviously.

I don't think anybody ever found these "Easter egg" shots, right?

Anyway, I feel that this one of Brad Pitt is really cool, looks very natural, love the skin tones.

Jarred shows us more and more interesting material each time, I can't wait to see the next one.

It's also going to embarrass a few high-end hybrid cameras, never mind more expensive cinema cameras from other manufacturers.

Don't know if this was already answered, but will the Komodo have simultaneous Red Raw and ProRes at any resolution(2k, 4k)?

Due to size, power, heat dissipation, etc issues it seems unlikely. That said, the processing power needed to create a UHD/4K RGB signal for the 12g SDI spigot must already be in there. What are the resource requirements to encode that RGB into ProRes? Would it be FPGA or ASIC? CFast 2.0 has the theoretical write speed to do both R3Ds and ProRes simultaneously, but would that push too close to the limit for the kind of reliability needed?

FWIW, using an external monitor/recorder device that can encode the RGB over SDI into ProRes - and provide monitoring - might be the ticket for redundancy/ready to edit files anyway.

While we're on the subject, I'm still hopeful that tethered recording of R3Ds via the 12g SDI tap will be offered. While the raw files might not adhere to the regular SDI spec, it could still serve as a high bandwidth hose for digital data. Keep in mind that 12 gigabits is 1.5 gigaBytes (1,500MB/sec) - for reference the DSMC2 bodies top out at 300MB/s writes. These numbers are all theoretical, actual real world implementations will have overhead/latency/etc issues. That said, 500MB/s would seem feasible - and who wants to fill storage faster than that anyway...

Cheers - #19

Thanks Blair for the detailed info! Yeah I forgot about the SDI output. Also for SDI video Output, I wonder if you could still record at 6K internally and simultaneous output a 4K , 2k or 1080p signal over the SDI. Or, would you have the decrease the internal recording to lets say 4K @60fps or 6K @24fps to output a high Res. signal. Maybe no internal recording with a max SDI output of 4K @100fps

Much less than encoding from Raw to RGB probably.
Recorder is a good option, but with out it, to be able write ProRes would be nice.
To write or R3D or ProRes will be wanted by many people. Camera is not only codec but also sensor, overall design.
At least that's how I see it.

Maybe, but you need to convert RAW data to RGB in order to encode ProRes so it would add up, not replace.
Nowadays, with a relatively up to date machine, you can edit natively R3D at least in 6K and below, without too much issues so I personally don't need ProRes on Komodo... But I get that for some it could be a nice option. (have it in an external recorder... Most of them are monitors too anyways so...)
