  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

How's Komodo sensor size regarding Speed Boosting full frame EF lenses? All the EF-Leitax Leica R, Contax Zeiss, Canon FD.

There is an EF - RF Speed Booster Ultra available, wondering if Metabones decides to give it the 'cine-treatment'.

Using Phil's tool, you can see the Komodo vs the EOS R. Both set to HD and using the largest sensor area for video (speaking of the EOS R)

Komodo appears larger, so we probably require a SpeedBooster that generates a larger image circle... TBD until we all give it a test though!

Or, as Robert said:

...There was no simple yes or no answer, but if you can find a full frame image from an RF mount camera with the speedbooster on we would be able to check if Komodo will vignette at 6K.

Starting to regret slightly the idea that this thread is the place where Komodo availability will be announced-- feels like most days there's just another page or two of posts asking questions that have already been answered. That's totally understandable--at this point, the discussion is far too long to be very useful as a reference for newcomers, and there's a lot of excitement around the camera--, but it means that it's more of a chore than fun to check back in.
Don't mean to be negative-- and continued thanks to the patient contributors answering all questions and posting new info. But anyone else feeling like maybe a more organized presentation of the information would be worth trading for the little reward to the long-time sufferers?

My opinion is that technical forums are ment to be messy and redundant somehow. They are "raw" spaces where many technicians bring or receive experience and knowledge.

When we first got here, some of us took time to read - maybe not every single - but most of the posts to get informations, ask new question or add disparagingly comments (in my case...).

But many professional websites try to summarize these informations as they arrive:

https://www.cinema5d.com/red-komodo-what-we-know-so-far/

https://www.provideocoalition.com/red-and-jarred-land-tease-komodo-6k-sensor-size/

https://www.4kshooters.net/2019/08/13/red-komodo-6k-camera-module-what-we-know-so-far/

http://phfx.com/tools/

May not be as fresh nor precise as what we got here on the forum, but it's a good organized start, don't you think?

Jarred posed the question of starting fresh some pages back since this thread turned into War and Peace length. The consensus was to wait until the production specs are locked and start a new thread for the formal announcement.

Not intended as a solution, just an FYI on a helpful but not well known feature: if you click on the “Red Team” button on the upper right of one of Jared’s replies, it will quickly jump to his next post. Of course there’s tons of useful discussion from users, but this is quick way to filter all but Jared’s (or other Red team members) posts.

Where's the Phil button? Kidding.

No worries peeps. Once Komodo is on all four legs with tail fully attached we'll have a dedicated category here on REDuser and of course we'll sticky anything that's super important.

This thread is just the dust storm outside of the wood shop. That's why you need to squint to see anything :)

Yeah, I recall-- I liked the idea--that the latest would just be for "us"-- but had started to doubt! Thanks all for the positive thoughts, though-- you guys are right that external sites have summarized specs, and I didn't previously know about the "red team" feature. And if there's a big Komodo announcement in this thread, and I miss it, well-- it probably won't be all that long before I get the information about where to send my credit card info anyway. Thanks, guys.

Yes I follow you. Thank you for the reply. My question was more the later end of your response. You are right Phill Holland has the answer with his tool and I am grateful for it. I should have clarified further. The tool answers the question I was trying to ask. What is the Komodo crop factor. A 35mm lens on Komodo will act like a 47mm lens when comparing to FF.

I know what Jarred said... I'm just saying that it's fucking faster and better than Cfast2.0... maybe I'm wrong in thinking that?

any reason why Red shouldn't switch to CFexpress2?

Why switch to a relatively scarce more expensive media if cfast2 is more than adequate to do the job?
Switching to Cfast express this late would require redesigning the processor board with a PCIE interface rather than SATA III. It isn’t a simple switch to a different drive model.

Cfast 2.0 is a well established media (it is even used on some of Arri's cameras) so it is easily available and relatively cheap.
Plus, as David said above, this late in the game it would require to change the processor board and redesign the media bay for performances that are not needed for 6K Redcode Raw. (which at 3:1 compression on a Dragon camera, doesn't saturate the bandwith of a Cfast and we [still] don't know what compression rate Komodo will have but we can assume that in a body that small that 3:1 might not make the cut or only at 24fps... But it won't be a media problem, more of a general processing and cooling issue in a body so small and they won't make it bigger as it would go against the whole concept of the product)

Elegant engineering means balancing many possible solutions in pursuit of the design goal.
Early reports are that CF Express runs very hot.

I am days away from locking down the mechanical spec of Komodo so we can get on with it..... I really don't think you all want another change now:)

CFexpress2 is great.. but the spec was not stable enough during development of Komodo and the risk doesn't provide enough benefits to Komodo (on the capture side) to switch protocols.

It is a bit smaller than cfast which would of been an advantage for Komodo, but as such dissipating heat is a bit more complicated which means the size gain you get from the card size you lose from the extra hardware cooling it down, specially when you are using it for recording (proper) video bitrates.

We still are testing CFexpress... and if we can make it work then maybe we will use it for a camera down the road. But lets see where it all falls. Memory standards are at that point that seems to happen every 10 years where a bunch of options get thrown on the table and only a few last more than a couple years. I have 4 mirrorless cameras released last year and they all have different media options. SD, CFAST, XQD, and CFexpress. SD is holding on for dear life but damn that card is a survivor. It looks like XQD is throwing in the towel and submitting to CFExpress2. CFast lands in the middle somewhere. Probably not here for the long haul.. but the best option all things considered for the short time.

Does anyone else feel like we're at the beginning of an epic journey?

It began with the cryptic announcement of the forging of a small B/C camera... Darkness had crept back into the reduser forum. Rumor grew of a shadow in the west, whispers of a nameless project, and the Komodo perceived its time had now come. It abandoned Jarred.

But something happened then the Komodo did not intend. It was lusted after by the most unlikely creature imaginable. Independent film makers looking for a small A camera.

For the time will soon come when Indies will shape the fortunes of all.

I am super excited to see where everything lands. No pun intended.
