  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Jarred, Any idea when preorders will start to open up?

The last ballpark I gave you is still looking good for the first run..... if everything continues to go as well as it has so far.

Let’s NOT go down the Hydrogen rabbit hole and have Jarred answer this, No offense but I don’t want to hear any other than Jarred on these matters.

Good advice... And honestly we haven't laid out the Hydrogen discount plan yet. But I think it's probably fair to say that whatever happens will be for the original owner only.

Speaking of which.. I know I keep saying it but I want to be very clear that Komodo has always been, and continues to be, a camera first. The Hydrogen ( and other phones ) are an accessory to the camera, not the other way around.

No penalty for the size.. no penalty for the Global shutter either . it's a real RED camera , and hence image is #1. You can expect Komodo to fall in the vicinity of a Helium for dynamic range, in both Global Shutter mode and Rolling Shutter mode.

That sounds very very good ! :)
Thanks man.

The last real question has just been answered and that is not "nice" nor "cool" at all, that is huge.. I'm not sure people realize it..
This detail was not revealed yet as they were still working on it i guess, congrats to all the team who i'm sure were all sweating in the oven kitchen to make that work..

@Jarred, you said in a previous post that some people swear they can intercut R3D from all the Red lineups and some swear they can't, in term of image DNA, which Red lineup Komodo is the closest to?

Congrats again all!

Damn, this getting even more interesting... I'm having a blast with the Helium when shooting docos and run & gun whatever the available light is, I'm dreaming about doing the same stuff with a smaller body, can't wait.

Thank you for this BIG detail, I am sure it will make a lot of people very happy!!!
Isn't that what you meant when you said that it was the huge drawback you had to overcome with the current crop of sensors when making the Komodo?

Question to you Jarred, what would be the benefit of using Rolling Shutter Mode?
Higher FPS? or...???

Might as well toss in the ability to do long exposure photos, perhaps even longer then 30sec. Then also build an intervalomeater like the Sony a7r3 has (with ael low, Med, high). Make it good for photo, timelapse, and video. Now that’s asking a lot :)

+1000 please!!!

Based on Jarred's post (see above), I expect it to be closer to Helium in terms of image DNA.

Can you confirm whether the Komodo can be frame synced please?

Thanks for the clarification on the Hydrogen discount plan Jarred. Agree this should be reserved for original owner - investors.
Awesome news on the dynamic range front!

Are the early Hydrogen adopters getting a discount and preferential status for reserving/pre-ordering Komodo, or solely a discount?

Jarred mentioned earlier in this thread that Hydrogen owners would get preference when pre-orders open:

And yes Komodo discount for those that bought Hydrogens before the module was cancelled is still in play. And more importantly for some.... the pole position.

Understood.

Thanks, Robert

Hopefully there will still be a substantial quantity available for those of us who did not invest in Hydrogen.

Jarred announces a dynamic range close to a Helium… For a Global Shutter sensor, 17 diaph would be just incredible, a real revolution.
But what I dread is the fact that this is a new sensor… and I'm afraid that the rendering of the Dragon sensors (for me the great success of Red), will not be the same, no longer be as close to film support…
I hope I am wrong.

Based on Jarred's post (see above), I expect it to be closer to Helium in terms of image DNA.

Rolling shutter mode is good when you want to match rolling shutter RED cameras in a multi camera setup. You don't get extra frame rates going to rolling shutter.

And yes.. Global Shutter has always come at the expense of dynamic range. Our sensor team overcame that... and it's pretty monumental.

As for DNA... Komodo is it's own beast...I was just talking about this at the Reduser meetup last week and as subjective as such a thing can be, we determined it's probably most like a Helium but with a touch of Dragon.

Very good news to hear. I'm still dying to hear what the ability to switch off Global shutter really means? What do we gain by shutting it off? More FPS? Low Light?

Speaking of Low Light, will Komodo have dual-ISO? Is that a possibility? Reason being that if there's a Low Light option, then a setup consisting of a small gimbal and battery-LEDs could be enough for a low key shoot with fast setup changes and without the need of transporting big lights.

Jarred,

Will the Komodo have a similar Color Science as Helium as well or will it have it's own unique color properties?

The answer is both... it will be similar.. but also unique. Kind of like if you compare all our other sensors. Each one has its own character but they also all share a bit of the same DNA.

Thanks Jarred for the clarification!

Congratulations on the global shutter engineering breakthrough Jarred, this is really a milestone. Will the stormtroopers be announced in a thread here at Reduser?

In rolling shutter mode, that's not so surprising. For both though, that's quite impressive -- never mind that it allows for switching modes, which is also impressive. And cool. :)

What makes me curious though is what advantage is there in using rolling shutter mode if there's no dynamic range penalty in global shutter mode? Or in other words, why use rolling shutter if it doesn't reduce dynamic range? Possibly higher max frame rates in rolling shutter rather than global shutter mode?
