  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Hey, are you sure ? Netflix seems to be asking a 6:1 maximum compression ratio for 6K RED cameras. (I know the Xenomorph is not listed by Netflix but isn't it basically a Dragon 6K in a custom shell ?)

The Xenomorphs they used for season 2 were Helium based so 8K:

"Messerschmidt: For season two we switched to Red’s Helium sensor, shooting in 8K 2:1 with 8:1 compression. Out of the 8K raster we framed for a 6.5K extraction area, which left room for stabilization in post. We did extensive lighting, color and workflow tests prior to the decision to switch camera sensors and ended up loving the results of the Helium. We found the noise floor to be substantially lower, the color fidelity to be better and the sensitivity to be higher than the Dragon."

"Messerschmidt: For season two Red built us a new model of the Xenomorph dubbed the Mark II. The new body included the DSMC2 brain with the Helium sensor. It was upgraded with redesigned cooling, integrated lens motors and the new Teradek Bolt video transmitters. "

Hmm... I really don’t get what kind of camera this is.
If it’s 6K, shoot R3D’s on a S35 (or larger?) sensor that is clean at ISO 3200 and use tiny batteries that will last all day... Why wouldn’t lots of people wanna use it as their A-Cam?
I almost never shoot high speed and 6K is more than enough for my needs... Why would I want anything more than a Komodo?
Or am I forgetting something? What’s the catch? :)

Perhaps...feature set and modularity platform tailored for specific market requirements.

Yeah, I mean personally I'm assuming it shoots R3D masters (but yeah maybe maxes out at 6:1 or 8:1).

CFast should allow lower compression than that.

Hey this season of Mindhunter, which I think is an amazingly beautiful show, was shot 8:1. If all other things are equal I’d take that (I know you’re just speculating).

I think you may have hit on something with the 4K SDI. I wouldn’t be shocked if this thing needs a specific module to shoot r3d, and it primarily shoots to an external recorder over that sdi.

I’m pretty sure it will record Redcode to the built in C-fast card support. RAW recording is easier, and lower bandwidth/smaller files than high quality Prores. In fact I bet it ONLY records Redcode internally. Compression rates will have to stay under the bandwidth limits of C-fast.

Well surprisingly they didn’t call me to help out on the shoot, but according to an interview with Messerschmidt (the DP) it was 8:1. Here’s the source:

They had a new Xenomorph in hand with a Helium sensor. According to that handy chart you provided, Dragon and Helium have different redcode compression reqs.

Edit: Chuks beat me to it...

I think when they shoot 8K compression can be 8:1. Anything below is generally 6:1. Unless I'm mistaken.

Oh ok, I missed that. Nice to know. ;)

Don't worry you will see lots of footage before you can actually buy Komodo.. It has already shot a feature :)

And Komodo is not a surprise "take over the lower end market" camera, it's a camera designed for a specific application at the highest level and hence is being tested and tested and tested and then tested some more before release. That has always been the plan since the start, remember I told you all exactly how Komodo would be rolled out and it's sticking to that path pretty well.

Of course.. people will compare it to everything else out there from Black magics to our own cameras and everything else in between.. but it really sits in it's own market... at least that is what it was designed to do. It's a complimentary camera , designed to take the best images possible that do one thing very, very well in its most simplest of form.

It is not a replacement camera nor should it be anyones first camera, even though I am well aware that it probably will be one or both of those for some, because It is good... It is really, really good.

Now you just teasing us Jarred :)

- It is not a replacement camera
- It is not a first camera

million dollar question is how the top looks ... can we please have a "teaser" image from the top of the unit :)

Just a guess, but I feel like what it's "specific application" is to be the best drone camera on the market. Perhaps some type of wireless video stream and remote camera control would be the Hydrogen integration? What else would a tiny camera (that is still too big to be some sort of GoPro replacement) be designed to be best at? Smaller batteries, lightweight recording media, a Canon RF mount, which would allow for remote focus control, all seem to scream drone cam as well.

Seems like it’s going to be RED’s take on what BMD did with the Micro Cinema Camera.

Yeah I think you've hit the nail on the head with this. Certainly makes a lot of sense.

C'mon Jarred, nothing you said buttons it down at all; if anything it can be skewed/interpreted anyway the reader wants...

For all we know, the "one thing it does really, really well" is gimble work, because it has DualPixel AF!... OR maybe it's super good a low-light because the one thing it does really well is ISO's greater than 12800!... or the one thing it does really well is 3D because of the body-size... ...see what I mean?

You gotta give us something (or at least tease another framegrab)! heh heh.

Yeah I was thinking 3D too because of how small it is. 3D on a drone, a gimbal, etc.

3D might be a good lead there because of the Hydrogen One mentionned. Imagine you can hook two Komodo up via the EXT PORT to sync them and watch the 3D footage wirelessly onto an Hydrogen phone. Or something like that.

Are people still shooting 3d?

I'm betting on drone/gimbal cam designed to complement the bigger cams.

Jarred, could you confirm if Komodo will have a useful autofocus?

3D may return in another 5-10 years? lol. next one will be the real one! hahaha.

(Put it in a trashcan and light it on fire)

This is exactly what I wanted to hear. I really can't wait to put a Komoda in a precarious place and see what I can capture with it.

Totally OT, but I really wish 3D had more of a chance to mature before they tried to shove it down consumers throats. I have an LG OLED. It’s the 2016 model, which was the last one to include 3D. It’s ducking incredible. Full 1080 per eye. Better than I experience in the theater and I think if it looked like this from jump, with passive glasses, it actually would have stuck around.

I think “3D” will make a comeback in at least a small way with more and more theatrical VR180 productions being made.

In case you missed Jarred's Instagram post today:

That's Mike Will holding a Komodo and what appears to be a SmallHD screen. Hard to say exactly what's going on there, but it looks like the display is mounted to something on top of Komodo *hopefully allowing tilt and swivel use.

I was previously suspecting perhaps a small popup and rotating touch screen up there, but this certainly makes me think there isn't something like that.
