  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Jarred said back then that DSMC² bodies had the choice of Prores or 4k output, and that at the time, 4k output wasn't relevant as there were no 4k displays available, so they went Prores.
For that reason, I don't think there will be Prores in camera as there is a 4k output this time.

But then, there is no HDMI output either. If there is no proprietary output on the brain, it probably means there is just enough horsepower left for internal Prores.
But then also, considering the size of the brain.... not sure.

But I'd rather take one pogo output on top to be honest.

Just release the specs boys !

This is an interesting question ... How much of the "brain" is the brain, and how much will it depend on your Hydrogen 1 (or 2)? How much work will the cell phone (I mean err ... Media Machine ... ) be doing, taking the load off the camera's processessor?

Based on the specs of the Hydrogen, I don't think it's going to be taking any sort of computational load off of the "brain".

It seemed like Komodo and Hydrogen camera module were totally separate things and that the marketing team had to "connect" them after the hydrogen bombed and the hydrogen was moved under the red camera divisions control.

I think the only hydrogen integration is going to be a discount and an app that any phone can use. So basically just a discount acting as a token of gratitude for those who took the gamble on the phone.

We shall see, but i just don't think there is going to be any deep integration here.

Very much the same moves here. I haven't purchased power or memory yet, that's the easy stuff. But I grabbed various lens adapters for RF Mount in anticipation. This is actually a double dip for me as this is preparing for Komodo, but also an upcoming Canon Mirrorless camera.

Which Canon mirrorless, out of curiosity?

I'm suddenly on the market for a mirrorless camera again, because my Sony A7r shutter crapped out on me during a shoot over the weekend... since I got it not long after its launch and have been using it all over the place, I'm not all that annoyed that it finally gave up the goose in general, but mostly about the timing... I'd planned on getting a Komodo first and holding on to my a7r while I decided which mirrorless to finally go with; now I might be forced to choose sooner than I'd planned :-/

I don't have much of an investment in Sony lenses, since I've been using manual focus lenses adapted from other mounts, mainly Alpha and Nikon.

I hope none, there’s not even enough processing power to load different screen switching animations when swiping between pages. Only the default one works without hanging.

Prores licenses cost money. My bet is internal Redcode only to Cfast with high quality scaled 4k output to 6g or 12g SDI for external video recorders. Externalize that cost in the interest of better IQ and frame rates internally at the price point.
Comparisons with older Red tech like Raven are pointless. The processing power available at a given cost, power consumption and thermal envelope has increased exponentially since Raven was introduced. That is what will likely still be the limiting factor, not the sensor.

Yes processing power has evolved, but by lowering the specs, it should be able to do the same for less money, less heat and less space.
And this is a "only" a 6k brain.
Pushing the limits on DSMCs, create new standards like 8k, and having a miniature brain for covering present day standard deliveries (4k) seems the way to go.

The bomb has dropped on the sensor size :)

Soderbergh: What’s interesting is the film that I made since The Laundromat with Meryl that we just wrapped, I was using the new Red Komodo, which is the best of both. It’s extremely small, but it’s got a full-sized sensor. You can strip it down to absolutely nothing and it’s truly quite small and light. The lens is bigger and heavier than the body. Or you can very easily—if you need a little bit of mass because of the shot you’re doing, whether it be handheld or whatever—put some gak on it and give it a little more weight and turn it into that tool. We were the first people to get it. These bodies were hot off the bench. I was very, very pleased with what it allowed me to do. It was small enough for me to be able to put it anywhere I wanted very quickly but big enough to give me the aesthetics and the practicality that a “normal” camera would give me. It was pretty exciting.

Filmmaker: Are you going to use it going forward?

Soderbergh: Yeah, I mean, I don’t know why I wouldn’t. I guess my question for them is: are people supposed to use this now? I have three Monstro bodies. I’m wondering what I do with those. Rent them out, I guess.

that's awesome

Looks like Jarrred has clarified what Steven meant by full frame.

yeah noticed that now ... so S35 it is ... not to shabby anyway... will be a great b camera and gimbal unit for me ...

Dudes, where did he clarify ? (I'm not doubting, I'd just like to read it... I was betting on s35 gemini-ish size anyway :p)

I don’t care about the full specs, it being 6K and s35 shooting r3d is all I need. I am dying to see some footage, if it’s a little brother to the Gemini skin tone and color wise I will be in love. If it’s clean up to 3200 that would be a welcomed bonus

100% with you !

EDIT : one bonus thing I would love is some kind of screen and buttons on the top to control the settings (like on Venice, Alexa and even DSMC2 with the Sidekick)

My only potential concern with this camera will be the crop in 4K. Red could have avoided a lot of issues with their existing lineup if they just made the Komodo a great 4K camera (putting it in its own market segment compared to their higher-end cameras).

A full-frame DCI 4K camera that has R3D and their usual 4k frame rates (120fps or so) while also having an RF Mount and CFast cards and small Canon batteries that last all day would be an instant buy for me. Even all of that at Super35 4K would be an instant buy. As long as ISO 2000 looked great and 3200 was usable.

But, at 6K, I don't think there is any way we're getting something that won't have close to a 2x+ crop in 4K now. The 6K is probably Super35, as a 6K full-frame camera would really step on the toes of Monstro and Gemini. So that means a very significant crop in 4K, which is what I do 99% of my work in and is a sweet spot for file size and storage costs, especially with R3D files.

We'll see and it's still looking likely I'll snag one of these if it at least has R3D and 120fps in 4K, but really hoping for a minimal crop (close to Super35) in 5K.
