  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Not open for further replies.
Just bought a Hydrogen on eBay with a bad IMEI number. Hopefully you don’t need an activated hydrogen to use the Komodo.

What an interesting update with just a single photo.

So it looks like with the first KOMODO tease photo that showed a mirrored headphone jack and what looked like a CFAST slot was actually a shot on a reflective surface.
And now we know the heatsink on the left side of the camera. The headphone and mic placement looks great for the microphone, especially if the M4 screwpoint is signifying that either ribs or cages are on the way for this thing for side mounting a shotgun mic.
Now, the big question proposed is the big red button.

That first tease only showed us that there seemed to be a little bit of a gap next to the heatsink. I had assumed that it was a sliding battery release, but now it looks like the red button is taking that role.
It seems odd to have the CFast indicator there without a card slot nearby though. That leads me to believe that this might be a hatch that opens up to reveal a card slot and maybe a battery slot.
I'm a little unsure on the battery slot as unless this is significantly less power hungry, that would be a lot of battery swaps with that small of an area.

The bottom of the camera appears to have the usual RED mounting, which is a nice nod for current accessory compatibility (at least on one level).

My prediction of this being 4K was clearly wrong and I'm glad. I think it's interesting that there were barely any 6K predictions, most were either 8K, 5K, or 4K.
I still feel pretty confident in saying this is a 3:2 FF sensor. The sensor just looks too close to the mount to be S35, even with the angle.
With today's RF mount confirmation, I actually went and found a video with a closer angle and here's how it lines up:
komodoCompare3.jpg

I didn't throw the sensor lines on this time, but once that angle is just about lined up it's about as dead on of a match as you can get.
So we're looking at a 6144x4055 sensor (24.9 Megapixels) with roughly a 6 micron pixel pitch (5.85 to be exact).
That's 271 MB/sec at 3:1 compression while recording 6K 3:2 24fps.
24 FPS at 5:1 is 163 MB/sec.
60 FPS at 8:1 is 254 MB/sec.

I still feel like we're looking at regular R3D and not R3D-lite, but either way it's probably best to wait and see what CFAST cards RED is throwing the seal of approval onto.

Last thing of note, is that there aren't any holes for screws to get to on the left (right while facing forward) side of the sensor. So my curiosity toward what the one we've seen in two pictures for now remains.

Oh, and also the external ND EF adapter probably means that we're not getting Internal ND's.

Where are you getting the resolution from? I would guess it's the same sensor in the A7III, Kinefinity Mavo LF, Z-Cam 6K FF, etc. I would not be surprised if Blackmagic is going to build a camera with the same sensor. Blackmagic's next cam may be a FF pocket with VARI-ND using the same sensor.

What's most shocking of all is, if this camera hovers around the +- $5000 point, this is significantly cheaper than even the Kinefinity MAVO LF.

The short list of stuff we know for sure thus far about Komodo.

- It's the least expensive RED camera to date, sub $5K for Hydrogen Owners. Don't know final price yet.
- It's tiny and lightweight as per the first post
- Jarred's last post confirmed the lens mount is indeed Canon EOS R / RF Mount
- The Variable ND shown in the last image posted is the Canon EOS R > EF w/ Built in Variable ND and you can remove that tray for "clear" with the clear insert. There are 3rd party options as well on this front if you want to go nuts btw.
- Media, I think it's safe to say CFAST 2.0 after the tease, but I do wonder if there could be more possibilities perhaps?
- We now know Komodo is 6K, which if RED is keeping to their own logic likely comes to a 6144x???? resolution sensor. There have been two 6K FF format sizes in the past, one with a height of 3160 and the other 3240 pixels tall. However, we don't know the actual aspect ratio of the sensor yet.
- This is the shortest flange depth mount RED has ever supported

The mystery stuff is:
- We don't know the format size, aspect ratio, and resolution of the actual sensor
- Maximum FPS or even what it records. REDCODE RAW? A new flavor of ice cream? ProRes?
- We don't know how to power it yet
- We don't know anything about monitoring, though speculation is pretty wild on the book of face
- Actual delivery date, that's of course not announced officially yet, but this year means this year I think in this case
- Actual Price Point and what it needs to get up and running

Interestingly since there's a known quantity within the teased images you can really speculate and extract a good educated guess on that sensor size, but I'm not going to blast my theories around because a lot more is going on in the gate it seems.

There's honestly a lot we don't know, but so far it's looking like a little rugged camera that likely will make it's way onto productions even, possibly replacing the need for certain other cameras in those scenarios as it's the first thing RED has pushed out that is this small.

On a personal note, I'm super happy with this new mount in a big way. It's super easy to adapt to and as shown you can do fun things like behind-the-lens ND.

At the moment I'm really, really curious about exactly what this sensor can do and how I can deploy it on shoots.

This camera is a game changer. If it's the same FF 6016×3984 found in the MAVO LF, even at $7000 with an LCD may kill the competition. The BM pocket 4K/6K is a really amazing camera but a lot of people complain about the fixed screen, lack of ND, no SDI, and lack of OLPF/suitable IR Cut. Blackmagic seems to have this weird thing where they use the same IR Cut filter in all their cameras (which was never good enough even without ND) and then they try to fix it with color science.

If RED doesn't screw up and gives us both R3D and Prores then I don't see why this won't replace ever Blackmagic currently being used on major productions as a smaller camera or even crash cam.

THANK YOU PHIL. <3

There's honestly a lot we don't know

Amen.

We now have an answer to this question..... or at least part of an answer:

I am very excited that Jarred Land is letting me share the next little reveal on the new Red Digital Cinema Komodo 6K Camera. This thing just gets cooler and cooler. A tiny powerhouse.

I'm mostly just guessing based on the rest of the RED lineup.
Dragon 6K was 6144 horizontal and some of the 6K modes on the 8K cameras match that width.
Both the Dragon-X 5K and Gemini 5K have a horizontal width of 5120 pixels, so it just seems like RED likes to stick to the same when it comes to their widths.
The other resolution I could see is 5760x3840 since that's RED's current 3:2 mode on the 8K sensors.

Seems like now isn't really a good time for a "5760 isn't really 6K, now is it?" argument with the whole JinniTech situation over 32 GB's of storage discrepancy, but the sensor has clearly been in development far longer than that's been a controversy so really it could go either way. Or it could go with 6016×3984 like you pointed out in your next post.

Assuming it's 3:2, of course.

im gonna just leave this right here.. seems Jarred dropped another hint

haha Scott you shared it here already !

The interesting thing is, what Komodo will have to do with Hydrogen 2? Thinking of how Hydrogen was marketed, if Komodo is the answer to that, then Jarred is used to end up with a waistcoat whenever he goes to shop for a jacket. So, it sounds like there's much more to be revealed in this story.

Um, external recording/monitoring unit?

Thanks a lot Phil for this very interesting summary.
Do you know if there's any information about the DSMC2 modules compatibility ? As Jarred told it's not a DSMC3, do you think that is there any chance to use DSMC2 Touch screens or sidekick / side handle ? Or even if it will be a V-Mount feature ?

Thanks again !

Really cool. A small Red camera with an RF Mount and 6K resolution. I thought I was going all-in on the L-Mount due to Canon's non-professional first two releases, but along with their excellent lenses and adapters, Komodo gives me pause before selling all my EF glass for L-Mount glass as it is released.

But Red really HAS to make sure RedCode Raw is in this camera (ProRes too). With all of these new raw codecs in very inexpensive cameras giving amazing images, RedCode Raw is still far and away the best raw system there is. BM Raw is great too, but can only be used in DaVinci, which just isn't that conducive to a variety of projects.

I love shooting with Red and the image is amazing. Give me that in a smaller form factor like Komodo, especially with this RF Mount, and I'm probably back in the Red game.

I really hope it has good autofocus. A camera this size is great for gimbals and the autofocus on camera like Sony and Canon have really made a big difference...

If RED are not using Gemini and an underlying sensor pixel technology - could this be :

+) Larger pixels (pixels more sensitive to light ... in need of ND under normal use?)
+) Higher Signal to Noise ratio (better R3D compression ratio)
+) Less Pixels to process (less heat)
+) FF (to maximise light input)

.. could this be a RED offering into the semi-HFR world?

AJ

It will not have larger pixels than the GEMINI low light monster as this is not an FF sensor.... unless I missed that part in an earlier post...
