  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO ACCESSORIES (Grips, Cages, Handles...)

Aaton-Cameras smart grip handle:

"You dreamed about it, Aaton-Cameras and FoolColor revive the iconic wooden handle of Aaton cameras.

Carved from walnut like the original so copied, this new creation incorporates a Bluetooth connection to communicate with an iOS device which allows you to program the accessible functions for each camera. At the moment the handle and the app are compatible with RED DSMC 1/2 cameras (The RED KOMODO and other cameras will be added soon.)

Equipped with a joystick, a 5-position switch and three buttons similar to those of the beautiful Aaton cameras, the smart-handle-Aaton-Cameras comes to life thanks to the FoolGrip App designed by Mikael Lubtchansky of FoolColor.
The App is available for free on the APPLE AppStore.

The handle is supplied with a cable allowing it to be powered and connected to a RED DSMC 1/2 camera"

Hi all, I'm selling my Outrigger Handle. I found a better set up for my needs. $475. I'm based in Portland, OR.

Anybody have any suggestions for Arri rosette adapters that can be screwed into the expander module?

Trying to figure out how to get the best riser plate for Komodo in order to use it with my BT follow focus and rods.

Planning to use it in some kind of basic setup where I can attach it to a DJI RS2 gimbal, a Tilta Universal Quick Release Shoulder Pad and a basic tripod setup without too much switching of bottom plates.
Not sure if the Expander module would work good for this or if it's better to get some other riser plate that would work as a quick release between all of these setups?

I have the Tilta Shoulder pad, an old DSMC quick-release platform pack and waiting for the RS2. Tried the DSMC quick release and it works with the smaller screw for the camera bottom plate that attach to it, but it ends up too low for use with a FF. So I need a riser.
I'm also not sure if the DSMC quick release is a good option, it's a fast and good option for use with rods and FF, but maybe there's a better lightweight plate for a smaller setup that might work better with other equipment? It works well between the Tilta and my tripod for my old Red, so that's the idea here as well and perfect if it would work with the RS2 in a quick way as well.

I'm stuck at the same decision. Already I've been switching between Arca and Manfrotto plates. It's partially because the camera is so flexible. The other day I had to get an overhead shot looking straight down, and I was able to simply use a Gitzo systematic tripod with an Arca head. Brilliant that I didn't need a heavier-duty set-up-- but a little annoying to be carrying two separate attachment systems, since I was changing accessory "universes." (Side note: this was a situation where the Komodo's wifi capabilities really shone. The camera was too high to easily reach-- we only had a step-stool--, but the director could approve and monitor the shot, and I could easily change settings and roll. I even formatted the card remotely!)

It seems to me that your basic interface options are Manfrotto plate, Arca plate, or Arri dovetail. (For some set-ups, of course, the rods from your rod mount can be the connector to the shoulder pad, etc.) For now, I think I'm resigned to a slightly Frankenstein-y set-up. The gimbals by and large seem to work with the lightweight Manfrotto plates, so perhaps a manfrotto plate interface with the rod support is ideal. With this set-up, you can leave the rods built with a v-mount battery on the back (which becomes your shoulder rig counterweight) and your manual follow focus on the front.
From there, perhaps the rod support is mounted to an Arri dovetail plate, which also interfaces with shoulder mount solutions from Wooden Camera (and also the Tilta?). I like the arri dovetail for tripod and other duties where weight is less of an issue, because the Komodo would seem to require lots of flexibility to achieve proper balance with different lenses.

If you're using a wireless follow focus motor on the gimbal, you might consider a single-rod attachment. Sometime they're included with the ff motor kits, but you could consider a top-mount rod for this purpose as well.

re: https://tilta.com/shop/right-side-handle-2-0-rs-button/

Thanks, looks like it could work. I got this from Tilta:

"Unfortunatley the DSMC2 Run Stop Cable is not compatible with the Komodo as the Komodo has a different Run Stop Protocol.
If you are using an expansion module with a 3 Pin Fischer R/S port, you can use our Alexa Mini Cable with this Wooden Handle to trigger the Komodo:
https://tilta.com/shop/arri-alexa-mini-run-stop-cable-for-wooden-handle-2-0/
Otherwise, you would need to wait for an updated Komodo Run Stop Cable for this handle."

For anyone using the UltraSync One timecode generators, I've just messaged TimeCodeSystems to ask about getting a cable made similar to the one they offer for DSMC2 cameras, but specific to the Komodo's 9pin LEMO input. If that sounds like something you want, do message them as the more requests they get for it, the more likely they are to make it.

Cheers,

Paul :)

Anybody have any suggestions for Arri rosette adapters that can be screwed into the expander module?

Bright Tangerine makes an Arri rosette-to-Arri accessory mount:

If you want to be able to remove it easily, you could try the Smallrig NATO Clamp to ARRI Rosette Adapter:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1484497-REG/smallrig_2046b_nato_clamp_to_arri.html/?ap=y
(Obviously, this would mean also affixing a Nato clamp to the side.)

8Sinn make one too - I just got one and attached a Smallrig handle to it. Only issue was that the Smallrig handle end had a too long thread, so I had to Dremel the end off it, but that's the fault of the Smallrig, not 8Sinn.

HTH!

Cheers,

Paul :)

If anyone's interested here's a list of all the bits I'm using to make a good run and gun rig while spending the least amount of money. I already have a monitor and EF glass. I don't have the camera yet but this SHOULD work. It's designed to be quick and tool-less to strip down for gimbal shots. For that I'm planning to try running power to the camera direct from my Ronin S. Lots of research.

What are you using to connect the extension arm to the camera? I'm assuming you need some kind of a rosette on the camera itself to attach that arm.

Does this expansion box provide enough height to use Tokina Vista Primes with a standard touch-and-go plate on a Sachtler Video18 head? Big lenses on tiny cameras are a problem for tripod compatibility!

The extension arm mentions an M6 thread mount on the rosette.

I don't have first-hand knowledge, but have definitely had this problem before with a mirrorless camera, so was interested.

By my calculations, the Red Komodo Expander would allow a Tokina Vista to clear by at least 3/4".

Check my work:
From the dimensional drawing Jarred shared, the Komodo is 47.63mm from center of mount to the bottom.

At its widest point, the Tokina Vista Vision primes are 114mm (except the 135mm, which is 124mm at its widest point). Since they're heavy, you may have to push the body back on the tripod as far as possible, so let's assume the widest point sits over the tripod platform. If the 114mm of the lens is centered on the mount, that means you need half of that-- 57mm-- of clearance between center of mount and tripod platform.

The Red Komodo Expander is 32mm high. (https://www.red.com/komodo-expander-module)

So 47mm (Komodo body) + 32mm (Expander)=79mm from tripod platform. So approx 20mm or 3/4" of clearance.

The "NICEYRIG NATO Rail to Rosette Mount Adapter for ARRI Standard" has a rosette on the side that the extension arm or handle attaches to. Sorry for the slow reply.

I'm also wondering the same thing. As I understand it the standard Red control cable doesn't fit in the Komodo's integrated 9-PIN EXT port without an adaptor?

Stu,
I've had a discussion with Tilta about a cable that runs from the Tilta Rt. Side handle with R/S to the Komodo external 9 pin connector that has R/S. The Komodo R/S command is a simple momentary connection of pin 6 to ground. Should be simple enough to build one. Pulse Tilta, as I did.

Thanks for pointing this out Tom!

I'm going to use this with a Hasselblad prism viewfinder. Maybe someday the Komodo's menu screen will have the option to display in mirror image, to accommodate prism's reversed image.

That battery plate thing, what does it do? Is that only to get 12v out of the battery? Because that would solve the problem with remote focus motors not getting enough power, like the WCU-4.
